I grew up in a family where we were encouraged to play with mud, make mess and use our imaginations. Maybe I’m old enough to ‘know better’ but I still enjoy those things. And I have discovered a particular interest and aptitude for making, but more importantly, applying, fake blood. My Blood Menu Mouth Blood / Suitable for drinking, spitting, gurgling, does not sting if you get some in your eyes, contains no dairy products, keeps for several weeks if refrigerated / Flavors: Mint, Chocolate, Raspberry Translucent Blood / The best blood for shining light through, such as in a glass, down a window or on a mirror. Also looks great on white bathroom tiles. Slightly “faker” looking for tacky retro gore. Sticky Blood / Best for applying directly to skin or clothes as it sticks where you put it and drips slowly (so you have some time to take photos). Also available in a thinner version for real time dripping Clot Blood / Best for old wounds, scabs, and deep wounds. Needs to be specially applied. Sticks well to over the counter meat products. Appears darker to regular blood to give texture and colour variation Splash Blood / Best for bulk uses such as filling a bath with blood. Each recipe is designed for the particular project depending on the consistency required. Non-sticky so will run and drip like water. Works in a spray bottle of water pistol. What happens when you have a meeting with the boss of the town newspaper and you’re trying to get your folio together and the flippin printer won’t print right even though you just bought and put a new colour cartridge in and you do the test print bla bla bla and it all looks fine but when you go to print you get huge patches of magenta and bits of white lines … Get a new printer you say? Great idea … It’s just that I’ve totally depleted my finances trying to put this thing together for friday. Murphy’s Law anyone?

I lasted about six weeks with my three page folio decision. I decided I just had to turn some of my action figure photos back on. I still really like them and am proud of them so they’re back. I want to take more photos of Catwoman. I don’t think I did her justice in my original run. Plus there are some more action figures I want to buy. But now my folio is four pages instead of three. Oh well. I actually did leave some of my moo cards at my local comic book shop on Saturday. Yay me for doing that. I felt a bit stupid but the guy behind the counter went cool when he saw them so that’s a good reaction, I think. Two of my cards have gone to friends, which is a start I suppose. This self-promotion thing is hard! I feel really self-conscious about it and that’s a sensation I don’t enjoy. I can’t help but wonder what people will think, if they’ll like my photos. Oh, go see Iron Man. It totally rocks and Robert Downey Jr is awesome!

Ansel Adams once said “Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop”. I like to keep that idea in mind when developing my portfolio (which, to be honest is painstaking with nearly 100,000 images from the past 5 years to wade through, select from, touch up and upload). Sometimes it is possible to have too much of a good thing. My activity monitor occasionally goes nuts with large volumes of uploads and it becomes something of a chore for me, the time poor, to keep up with it all So, with due apologies to a few people who I recently stopped watching, I love your work, but I can’t keep up with that many uploads. Of course, you are welcome to disagree if you feel that 500 images represents your best work, but thinking back to the original Business of Photography series of journal entries, too many may affect one’s exposure in unexpected ways.

Decided it was time to go into my folio and cut it down. I wrote down a list of all my submissions in the Photography 101 list and realised it was time to stop spamming the group. I’m trying to cull the amount of photos I have in my folio. I’m nowhere near the standard of some of the people on here so I figured I should make an effort to show only the best of what I’ve done rather than every single photo I like. There were some hard choices made. I love all the photos in my Comics theme. But I made myself hide some of them because I understand there are people out there who really don’t want to see 16 photos of Batman, Catwoman and the Joker action figures. No, they can look at 11 instead. I shouldn’t be inflicting my comic book obsession on an innocent public ;) I’m curious to know if other people delete their photos or hide them. I’ve elected to hide mine so I can swap images if I’ve got a particular theme going on. I used to delete them but now I’ve shoved them at the end of my art list. Anyone else do this? But now I must be totally distracted because Curve has made it onto the featured page. Booyah!

After my first lesson with Mark (brave man!) I went through my folio and did a cull. I find myself looking at my photos with a far more critical eye than I once did. I’ve decided that a small folio with shots I’m really proud of is better than a big folio of mediocre shots. I’m going to stick to a three-page folio, no more no less. Once the three pages are filled, if I want to add a new shot, an old one will have to be removed. I used to care intensely about getting as many views as possible (hey, we all want to be popular!) and I loathed removing my photos because it’d bump down my views. But from now on, I’m going to try my best to not care about that. I’ll never have the huge views that some people do but I should be concerning myself with the quality of my photography instead of trying to win some stupid popularity contest that’s in my head. I have hopes that I’ll be able to make the leap from taking photos to making art. At the moment, that leap feels like it’s over a huge yawning chasm. I am so inexperienced, so totally out of my depth. However, I’m reminding myself that the great Ansel Adams, at one point in his life, would’ve picked up a camera and wondered what the hell to do with it and why all his photos were either over- or under-exposed. (Not that I’ll ever be anywhere as good as he was.) There’s so much to think about and take into consideration. So much to remember. At the moment, I feel like I’m taking some truly terribly photos. So bad that I think tonight’s job will be to burn them to DVD, delete them from my hard drive and forget about them. I like to believe I’ve always had reasonable composition skills (numerous people have told me I do and I’ve chosen to believe them) but right now I’m wondering a little. It’s a struggle to get it all straight in my head. I have to think constantly about what the numbers mean. And it’s hard! Much harder than I thought it would be. I’m not good with numbers at the best of time but I find the shutter speed/aperture combination makes my brain creak. Still, no one said it was going to be easy. I have discovered that it’s hugely satisfying to see a photo that’s come out spot-on. It’s funny, I’m a huge advocate of asking what I think is the all important question when it comes to digital arts: just because you can, does it mean you should? I can take photos – anyone can – but should I? I’ll get back to you on that.
