The Thistle – The Flower of Scotland. The story goes the English were planning to attack a Scottish camp at night. They started to advance on the sleeping Scots but one of the Englishmen crawled into a Thistle and gave out a yell thus alerting the Scots to the coming attack. The Scots managed to gather their wits about them and fend of the attack. From that moment onwards the Thistle has been the national flower.
And I don’t mean Fred, Mary or Jack!!! We were visiting the gardens in the grounds of a Scottish castle when I can across this amazing flower. I had never seen anything like it, just really liked it! (with thanks to Dinghysailor!) / Astrantia is a genus of herbaceous plants in the family Apiaceae, endemic to Central, Eastern and Southern Europe and the Caucasus. There are 8 or 9 species, which have aromatic roots, palmate leaves, and decorative flowers. They are commonly known as great masterwort, which may be confused with masterwort, Peucedanum ostruthium.

A precious find on an early morning outing in beautiful Inverie on the remote knoydart penisula on the west coast of the Scottish mainland. It’s a real wilderness area where wild flowers flourish in profusion on the lower slopes of this mountainous area without road access (We got the boat in from Mallaig). Morning dew in the sun transforms these delicate blue flowers which were growing outside a converted church and are possibly omphalodes, planted there rather than the forgetmenots I originally thought they were… ;) Cropped but otherwise untouched, and taken with my fujifilm finepix A500 on macro mode with a 4” tripod. I’m just so amazed and delighted that it’s true to what I had seen… and it’s well worth viewing larger I think too! / :)) / For more pics of this stunnnig area click this link: knoydart / Crespuscular my talented friend (check out his work too) found this so sad ballad/lament from the 70’s to sit alongside as a reminder of how priceless such mornings are…. A bedraggled survivor of this wet wet scottish summer soaks in a little warmth in the briefest of sunny intervals. I think it’s a dwarf aster or michaelmas daisy – a goodnatured border perennial and hardy with it – just as well! / ;) A handheld macro hastily taken along with japonese anemone / / /
Flowers sprawl over this curved oak bench (made from 5” kiln dried oak) where two can fit to enjoy this sunny corner of an old cottage garden in the scottish borders… For the lovely benches group / ;) See also retreat

A lovely tranquil woodland setting for this rustic bench (at Kailzie gardens, near Peebles in the scottish borders) surrounded by wonderful spring flowers like blue himalayan poppies, pink and bluebells, daisies and yellow celandine… while the nearby stream trickles down through the glade of colourful azaleas…. For a closeup of the blue poppies see himalayan blue taken in my garden (not this one ..lol!))

Apparantly lady’s eardrops is another name for the lovely fuchsia.. which I find hard to do justice to … This is the barely hardy bush variety ‘Celia Smedley’ – it survives in scotland only by (us) taking its pot into a frostfree greenhouse over winter… height and spread 75cm..dainty single or semi-double flowers with greenish white tubes, pale pink sepals and red petals. Nikon D60 / NIkkor VR 18-200 lens / UV filter / f/5.6 / 1/250sec / ISO-200 / 130mm Thanks so much for looking.. Cheers / :))))
Another angle on a lovely blue himalayan poppy (meconopsis) which has thrived in our scottish garden this year… it seems to like partial shade and was a real picture Nikon D60 / Nikkor VR18-200 / UV filter / f/8 / 1/125sec / ISO-110 / 95mm Cheers for looking! / :)))
For all of you, a rose from Scotland. Canon EOS 450D, 50mm f1.8 lens / Curves and slight usm, and a little vignetting

The little pink petals can be candied and used to decorate jellies and sorbets too (havent tried that yet..)
