The Sea Venture was one of the first ships to arrive in Bermuda. It was thrown accidentally off course by a hurricane and landed on the reefs intact. Its original course was with a fleet from England headed towards / Jamestown, Virginia to aid in the colonization. From being shipwrecked, the crew and passengers of the Sea Venture settled in Bermuda and benefitted from its tropical paradise and set up a small colony. This painting is a Mixed Media piece, combining original digital photography taken in Bermuda by SBC, painting, and drawing. It is intended to capture the natural and surreal beauty of Bermuda. It won an Honorable Mention Award in the Rowayton Art Show in 2006 and First Place in the Darien Art Show in 2007.

‘Iliki’ Spirit of Aloha is a mixed media production on canvas textured paper using ink, pastel, acrylic and charcoal. My darling ‘Illiki’ was inspired by James Michener’s novel ‘Hawaii’ and the beautiful young hawaiian girl who is one of the charming characters early on in the story. I was completely swept away during the reading of this incredible novel, highly recommended reading :D I think that the song Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole really relates to the story …. as his melancholy voice is so melodically accompanied by the ukelele….. it reminds me of the story of Iliki the young hawaiian girl, who leaves her island when still very young…. forever she haunted the mind of the young minister missionary who tended her and taught her in his first days on the island, he forever wondered how she was faring in the civilised world, having been taken away on a ship by the white men. He felt a certain special kind of fatherly love for this girl, and it tore his heart that she was so clever and cottoned on so well to the new english language, and customs he would teach her, as well as the scriptures…but she was a wild thing, and never one to be ‘pigeon-holed’ or contained… he set her free and never saw her again. She established, in the style of the grand estates of the period, several distinct gardens to evoke a range of aesthetic experiences. When I was vacationing on Sanibel Island, Florida, the gardener at the hotel noticed me taking macro shots of the flowers and led me to the bird of paradise that was blooming in a hidden spot. He was so kind, cutting away excess foliage that was blocking the flowers and making sure I’d get clean, clear access to the blossoms. I’d like to dedicate this image to all people who treat strangers like me with kindness and concern. Thanks, Mr. Gardener, whoever you are!

The Bird of Paradise is an extraordinary flower, both in its vibrant colors and its unique form. The sun was shining directly on this blossom in an otherwise shady alcove and I liked the natural spotlight effect it created.

On a dreary day, the flowers make all the difference.

Pouring rain forced us off the beach at Direction Island and into the shelter of the forest. Our senses were buzzing with the sound of rain and waves, the rich saturated colours and the scent of summer rain. / Direction Island is a much-loved anchorage for yachties, cocos locals and visitors, but no one lives there permanently. We shared it with about 10 people on this particular day.

I have been studying my a photographic guide to butterflies of Britian and Europe book and after much deliberation I think this is the name of this blue, they are so similar but there was a very clear photo of this one in the book.
