  • 9.5×12.5 pastel enhanced watercolor on a heavy, textured watercolor paper (regretably, I don’t remember the manufacturer) that was quartered. Available. A rose is a flowering shrub of the genus Rosa, and the flower of this shrub. There are more than a hundred species of wild roses, all from the northern hemisphere and mostly from temperate regions. The species form a group of generally prickly shrubs or climbers, and sometimes trailing plants, reaching 2–5 metres tall, occasionally reaching as high as 20 metres by climbing over other plants. The name originates from Latin rosa, borrowed through Oscan from colonial Greek in southern Italy: rhodon (Aeolic form: wrodon), from Aramaic wurrdā, from Assyrian wurtinnu, from Old Iranian *warda (cf. Armenian vard, Avestan warda, Sogdian ward, Parthian wâr). Rose hips are sometimes eaten, mainly for their vitamin C content. They are usually pressed and filtered to make rose hip syrup, as the fine hairs surrounding the seeds are unpleasant to eat (resembling itching powder). They can also be used to make herbal tea, jam, jelly and marmalade. A rose that has aged or gone rotten may not be particularly fragrant, but the rose’s basic chemistry prevents it from producing a pungent odor of any kind. Notably, when balled and mashed together the fragrance of the rose is enhanced. The fragrance of particularly large balls of mashed roses is enhanced even further. Rose hips are also used to produce an oil used in skin products. Rose shrubs are often used by homeowners and landscape architects for home security purposes. The sharp thorns of many rose species deter unauthorized persons from entering private properties, and may prevent break-ins if planted under windows and near drainpipes. The aesthetic characteristics of rose shrubs, in conjunction with their home security qualities, makes them a considerable alternative to artificial fences and walls. • Pure Watercolour on Arches 140lb This was a painting done on my recent trip to France. I picked a couple of white roses picked from the garden of the Gite where we stayed. Put them in a glass. Starting from the centre of one rose I worked outwards developing each petal as I went, adding foliage along the way. By turning the roses I could get different views. I prefer to work this way with flowers rather than draw them first, they have a different kind of freedom with a more natural look. They were actually white roses, but I decided to add colour to them, after all, white isn’t always white.

  • Mixed Media (Watercolor, gouache, graphite and colored pencil) on board, / 9×15 / 2009 Model: Tamia M“ When I thought I was unable to work in soft colors, I got this. It’s a kind of simplicity I’ve been pursuing for a long while. hope you all enjoy it.

  • “Desert Charm” is the first painting in a series of desert cactus flowers. The original watercolor is 30×22” and is painted on 140 lb Arches watercolor paper. When you think about the desert, what do you think about first? Sand, lots of sand, sand storms that sting the eyes, baron stretches of land, land with very little vegetation, and heat, unbearable heat are all things that came to mind when I thought about it. What a delightful surprise the cactus flowers were for me. Someone once told me that cactus flowers were evidence that God intended all to have beauty as he painted these beautiful flowers in n otherwise harsh environments. One spring in Arizona and I was hooked. I loved the southwest and knew this beautiful land would be a major influence in my painting.
