There is a certain lady artist on Red Bubble who is “always” uploading her poppy paintings. I shouldn’t say she inspired me to try my hand at them, but, rather, that she renewed my interest in a subject which I had not dwelt upon (often) in years. I have a few paintings, from years ago, called ‘Ethereal Tulips’ and such, of poppies. The name came from the fact that when the Alaska Parks and Highway Department started cozying up to the tourists by planting “wild flowers” to make the nasty little areas they’d dug up to widen the highway a little prettier, they chose to plant poppies. Only a few survived the first few times, so, there they were- at first we didn’t know how they got there – little almost see-through specks of ridiculously fragile looking blossoms, blowing in the wind, amidst the grass and hardier looking natural flora. I had heard of poppies but had never seen them. However, thanks to reading books on history, tales of small boys saving towns from cracked dykes, watching WW II War movies, etc. I had seen plenty of tulips in pictures and even, on very rare occasions, in person. Poppies, then, to me, looked a good deal like tulips, some of them anyway, in shape and in color, but they were less solid and real looking. So, ethereal tulips is what I would call them.
This is something I worked up when I was doing Zazzle stuffies, from my ‘Oh, yes! More poppies, please?’ painting. I decided that I liked it well enough, on it’s own, to be it’s own piece.
Silk Painting
Just popped out for a moment… when it gets dark… I’ll just pop back inside again… might nestle in for a hot chocolate, marshmallows, a few bugs garnished with a sprinkle of nectar…mmm mmm
This piece began with a journey to one of my favorite places on this earth, The Memphis Botanical Gardens. It is been a place of peace for me, since I discovered it as a young man back in the 1970’s. I have, and still do, find refuge there, as an escape from all things City. If you really observe the slow dance of nature, and the elements, instead of just walk past them, you can find what I have--another, more lovely world, right beneath our feet. I am blessed to be a man who does stop, and just watch, and be fed by the glory of creation. In times of pain, and lonliness, this peace beckons to us, in whispers most ears simply will not receive—I however, do. I have kept this pilgrimage of mine, as a private image diary of life, and peace, and beauty; our world is in great need of those like me—-men of peace, to unveil our secret findings. Bit by bit, I will guide you down the many long, quiet paths, which I have trodden. Now for the first time, Through REDBUBBLE—-the world is about to take my journey. My “bubble” would however, be Purple, the color of deepest Passion, for it is the overriding hue of my creative soul. So, I hope you will take pause--from your life—and walk with me a while. Perhaps, these works of mine, will love you back to peace.
