An exquisite, tiny, Australian ground orchid, so easily missed by passers-by. Baluk William Reserve I posed the question as to whether this is / Purple Beard Orchid – Calochilus robertsonii / or / Red Beard – Calochilus paludosus / and it seems from responses to be the latter. Thank you all who have helped me out here. These little angels are no bigger than a ten cent piece, but are stunningly beautiful close-up. When I was on holidays in the Northern Territory these orange trees dotted the landscape…This picture reminds me of a watercolour. Image unaltered.

The Grass tree (Xanthorrhoea australis) like many Australian plants needs fire to propagate effectively. Under normal conditions it is rare for the flower to form, after fire however it is a different story with every grasstree in sight sporting an amazing ‘kangaroo tail’ from its mop. I found this bunch on the lower slopes of Mt Oberon at Wilsons Promontory a few months after the 2005 bushfires.
