  • An exquisite, tiny, Australian ground orchid, so easily missed by passers-by. Baluk William Reserve I posed the question as to whether this is / Purple Beard Orchid – Calochilus robertsonii / or / Red Beard – Calochilus paludosus / and it seems from responses to be the latter. Thank you all who have helped me out here. These little angels are no bigger than a ten cent piece, but are stunningly beautiful close-up.   • When I was on holidays in the Northern Territory these orange trees dotted the landscape…This picture reminds me of a watercolour. Image unaltered.

  • The Grass tree (Xanthorrhoea australis) like many Australian plants needs fire to propagate effectively. Under normal conditions it is rare for the flower to form, after fire however it is a different story with every grasstree in sight sporting an amazing ‘kangaroo tail’ from its mop. I found this bunch on the lower slopes of Mt Oberon at Wilsons Promontory a few months after the 2005 bushfires.
