  • My promise to myself for this year is to be true to myself, and to have fun creating images that move me, that I can connect with on an emotional level. To listen to my inner voice that tells me to do what I want to do, and not worry about other peoples perceptions and expectations of the sort of images they feel I should be producing. I also want to carve out more time for my creativity, and reconnect with my little RB family as the last part of 2008 saw other things in my life take over. Important things to be sure, but my photography, my art and my friends nourish my soul and make me a better person. I need that in my life. Happy New Year everyone, I feel good things are in the air for me and mine in 2009, and I wish that for you and yours also. XXXXX Many thanks to Marcus J Ranum for his wonderful model.

Built 1930-31, Royal Shipyard (formerly), Castellamare di Stabia. and carried out many voyages before World War II. The period of the war was the only time the ship has not been active. The elegant, three-mated full rigger serves as the training vessel of the Italian Naval Academy. The entire rig and all the sheets are traditional materials: Canvas sails and hemp ropes. The only synthetic on board is the mooring lines, which have to be an approved type for some of the ports they visit. The sheets, laid end to end, span 35 km. • “Floating on Clouds” was shot in Goulds Newfoundland Canada. This is The Dory in natural light. I was talking to a friend about shooting “The Dory” and “Floating on Clouds” and how I used a polarizer to bring out the clouds on the water (as seen here) and removed it and used a flash to shoot “The Dory”. I was wondering in hindsight what I would have come up with if I had used the polarizer and flash at the same time. I know I would have given up about up to two stops with the filter which would have meant a slower shutter speed and the boat was moving, ever so slightly, so it may not have worked out? But maybe next time, live and learn! Camera Model Canon EOS 50D / Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1 / Av( Aperture Value ) 22.0 / ISO Speed 100 / Lens EF-S18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS / Focal Length 18.0mm / B + W Polarizer For more information please visit Brian’s Homepage or on Flickr
