by scarlettcatI was exploring different ways of keeping the focus on the centre of the page and ended up with this little sweetheart. She’s a flirty little milk maid who’s dripping off the page. I adore her sultry look and pouty lips. The original was illustrated on recycled cardboard with pencil, charcoal and ink. Enjoy! xxx scarlett

Burlesque is a humorous theatrical entertainment involving parody and sometimes grotesque exaggeration. Prior to Burlesque becoming associated with striptease, it was a form of musical and theatrical parody in which an opera or piece of classical theatre is adapted in a broad, often risqué style very different from that for which it was originally known. The term burlesque may be traced to folk poetry and theatre and apparently derived from the late Latin burra (‘trifle’). Some authors assert that the first instance of burlesque occurred in the Commedia dell’arte of 16th century Italy. However, the first wide spread use of the word was as a literary term in 17th century Italy and France where it referred to a grotesque imitation of the dignified or pathetic. Beginning in the early 18th century the term burlesque was used throughout Europe as a title for musical works in which serious and comic elements were juxtaposed or combined to achieve a grotesque effect. In the 19th century and 20th century England the word became a term for a dramatic production which ridicules stage conventions. In 20th century America the word became associated with a variety show in which strip tease is the chief attraction. Although the striptease originated at the Moulin Rouge in 1890s Paris and subsequently became a part of some burlesque across Europe, only in American culture is the term burlesque closely associated with the striptease. This artwork was originally a painting i created, 75×100cm, although she had light brown hair and was no where near as smoky as this little hussybag!!! I jazzed up her photo in photoshop and she came out like this. One of my favourite pieces of artwork i’ve ever created, although i do wish i painted her like this in the first place, just so she could hang on my wall and remind me that i really do love to paint.

These are three panels that i painted for a new funky cafe opening in my town. The owner is a good friend of mine so she got a great deal on them…hee hee …free on loan. She required something contemporary with a retro feel. The three panels are nearly 4 metres in length…it was a massive task. The final product looks a lot different in real life but seem to be getting great review so far. Acrylic, spray paint, ink, marker on board

This is Jamaica, my cat – she’s a Berman with a very dark face, stockings, tail and lovely white markings here and there… and blue blue eyes! A flirt and wonderful companion – she loves to flirt and knows exactly how to get what she wants! Used Redfield’s Fractalius (shaggy) to try to really bring out the eyes of Jamaica…
