Seagull about to take off
Perfect settings just sometimes need that little something extra. Over the last year I have become a great fan of the humble seagull for being so reliable.

Seagull Abstract Shot
a re-working of an old image of mine
In this little watercolor, sea birds take flight over the beach with its pools of water left in the sand by the receding tide.

On the south end of Arran lies the hamlet of Lagg and down on the shore thereabouts one can have some excellent views from the rocky shore towards Ailsa Craig (Elizabeth’s or Elspeth’s Rock) which lies about 14 miles to the south. / There were many cormorants on the rocks sunning themselves and drying their feathers before setting off on another fishing trip and I tried to get close enough to get a good photograph. I failed to get the right angle for what I wanted but as I was about to give up, something alarmed them all and off they flew. Knowing that I had Ailsa in my sights(!), I waited for them to cross in front and quickly grabbed a shot or two. / Here, for better or worse, is the result! / Thanks for looking / Richard Tech details: / Nikon D200 with Nikon VR 80-400mm @280mm / F7.1 1/180 / ISO100
Following on from the Arran Flight photograph I uploaded, this is taken a few seconds later as the cormorants flew out across the sea off the SW coast of Arran. / It’s quite hard taking photographs of a moving ‘flock’ of birds as it is so hard to concentrate on one section of the crowd (which is why birds do flock together to confuse a predator). / However, shooting against the light guaranteed me a shot with a bit of sparkle! / Thanks for looking / Richard Tech details: / Nikon D200 with Nikon VR 80-400mm @330mm / F11 1/500 / ISO100
This Crested Tern is one of a small colony of these birds we found on Kangaroo Island in South Australia a few months back. This is one of my first flight shots having never before taken flight shots with the exception of one occasion. Lucky for me these birds like to fly and I got a lot of practice taking flight shots that day.
Seagull takes off.
I had fun photographing the pelicans in Capitola, California. They aren’t the most graceful birds when they are taking off and landing, but when they are in the air, they really soar. I though I would put together a little collage of my favorites. Gear: Nikon D80, AF-S NIKKOR 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED
Australian pelican. I was on the wharf at Eden in NSW Australia taking photos of fishing boats when this great big creature took off right over me. Turn & shoot, that’s all the time you get! / pixel size: 2912×4368 / file size: 2.98 MB
A Seagull with it’s wing in full extension flying near the Pacific Ocean
Nikon D70 This was taken in Marine Park of Bellingham, WA state. We have so many of these around, they are not typically what I consider a pretty bird but I guess when you actually look at them they kind of are. :-) / The tide was very low this day and I had fun watching these gulls take their clam shells up high to drop on the rocks so they could get at the meat. I love how God has made each animal with special abilities to hunt and eat food.
