I think the water looks like Mercury.
This is old news now, but possibly still interesting: / Probably everyone knows that a week or so ago, one of the Adelaide Zoo flamingoes was bashed in broad daylight by a group of young men, probably stoned and/or high, who must have stepped across the low hedge into his enclosure, and beaten him with something or other, causing damage to his beak and stunning him. This flamingo is at least 70 years old, he came to our Zoo before anyone really kept proper records. In fact, the keepers don’t even know if it’s a male or a female, but as they say, at this point, who cares? He stands within arm’s reach, just inside his little hedge, and anyone can get up very close, and consequently take photos as good as one’s talent allows! He was nursed back to some semblance of health, but apparently he’s rather quiet and not eating as much as usual. He’s blind, and lives with another (Chilean) flamingo who’s deaf. They’re called the Grumpy Old Men. Everyone who has read about this very sad story is wishing him a good recovery – but we would have to admit, at his/her advanced age, the prognosis is probably not good. I feel as though an elderly friend of mine has been bashed in a safe and secure nursing home – it has taken away some of my baseline trust about how people normally (and should) act.

Lenka got the right answer on what it is. The image is closely cropped and I used Fractalius and Mr. Contrast to give it the rich color, and twirled it a bit to give it curves. Hope you like! Add me to your watch list now / My Bubblesite

Flamingos….... I will donate 100% of proceeds from the sales of this image to The Wildlife Trusts Flamingos filter-feed on brine shrimp. Their oddly-shaped beaks are specially adapted to separate mud and silt from the food they eat, and are uniquely used upside-down. The filtering of food items is assisted by hairy structures called lamellae which line the mandibles, and the large rough-surfaced tongue. The flamingo’s characteristic pink colouring is caused by the Beta carotene in their diet. Flamingos frequently stand on one leg. The reason for this behavior is not fully known. One common theory is that tucking one leg beneath the body may conserve body heat, but this has not been proven. It is often suggested that this is done in part to keep the legs from getting wet, in addition to conserving energy. As well as standing in the water, flamingos may stamp their webbed feet in the mud to stir up food from the bottom.
Such beautiful birds, they look like ballerinas dancing upon the water ! / Taken on a Canon EOS 40D Click on the image below to see what this image looks like framed !
Alive & thriving is what you’ll find with this image. The focus is a zoom taken at night of a gorgeous bloom from my wildflower garden. I get so excited from a photographer’s standpoint when I take a shot with really nice composition like this image has. I absolutely love the way this has turned out! I hope you’ll enjoy it too! *PLEASE VIEW LARGER Smiles Leilani
A shot I took at a local zoological park of which I really liked how the colors of the Flamingo pool swirled about as the Flamingo took a drink. Collectively, the reflection, the water swirls and the beads of water on the Flamingo made for a great shot….as least in my humble opinion:)
Overall, I found that the Stone Zoo didn’t provide many great photo opportunites and was, therfore, a big disppointment for me. Most of my shots of the day were taken at the flamingo exhibit. Here a Mother tends to her newborn flamigno which was born earlier this week. Enjoy! Len / I INVITE YOU TO ENJOY MORE OF MY PHOTOGRAPHS. CLICK HERE TO VIEW MY PORTFOLIO.
