Taken with a Canon 50D, Sigma 10-20 lens at 10mm, F11, shutter speed 1/80 to 1/4 seconds ISO100, processed in Photomatix and tweaked in Photoshop Whilst over on the East coast of England we visited Flamborough head, it is a stunning location with wonderful high cliffs and dramatic coves. Yesterday afternoon we had some stunning weather…..long may it continue!!! Flamborough Head is an eight mile long promontory on the Yorkshire coast of England, between the Filey and Bridlington bays of the North Sea. It is a chalk headland, and the resistance it offers to coastal erosion may be contrasted with the low coast of Holderness to the south. There are larger numbers and a wider range of cave habitats at Flamborough than at any other chalk site in Britain, the largest of which are known to extend for more than 50 m from their entrance on the coast. Flamborough Head was featured on the television programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of Yorkshire. Please view large!

Typically it was glorious sunshine when I left home but by the time I arrived at Flamborough it had clouded over which almost spoilt every shot I took. This is the best of the bunch. :) Nikon D40 – Nikkor 18-55mm

Three Birds Flying Once in a dream there came to me / Three birds flying, one, two, three. / The first was dark as water on a stone. / The second shone bright as sunlight on a stone, / And the third was gray as a stone, as a stone. / I rode with them as they flew on, / But when I woke the dream was gone. / I set it down on paper and the words are there. I saw this poem somewhere, it was written by a child. Yet i feel it captures the mood so well here. Enjoy.

  • old Beacon light tower, dating from circa 1674, and the only known example in England. Recent restoration work has cast doubt on whether a fire was ever actually lighted atop the structure. It now stands, a gleaming monument to the rightful awe in which mariners beheld the jagged, dangerous coast.

  • Danes Dyke
    by Andrew Leighton

    US$3.83–US$87.40

It’s cold, raining and thoroughly miserable outside today so I’ve had a rummage through the archives and founs a nice shot from earlier in the year. :) / This is a view of Danes Dyke which runs across Flamborough Head, Yorkshire. “Danes Dyke Local Nature Reserve acquires its name from the ancient ditch and bank earthwork, which runs through the reserve. Danes Dyke runs for 4km across the whole of the Flamborough Headland, from the nature reserve here in the south to Cat Nab on the Bempton Cliffs in the north. It consists of two constructed features, a flat-topped bank and a west-facing ditch. The bank was constructed from earth, stacked turfs and chalk rubble, much of which would have come from the ditch. Undoubtedly constructed as a defensive feature, it would have posed a formidable barrier, topped with a wooden palisade fence. Although no exact date has been given to its construction, comparisons with other post Roman earthworks of a similar size have been made. In particular with Aberford Dykes in the West Riding, which has been dated back to the Dark Ages. Today, Danes Dyke is a Scheduled Ancient Monument of national importance.” Nikon D40 – 18-55mm

  • Flamborough head Lighthouse
    by ShaunW

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Taken with a Canon 50D, Sigma 10-20 lens at 20mm, F11, shutter speed 1/400 second ISO100, tweaked in Photoshop This shot was taken on my recent trip to the East coast, this is more or less straight out the camera, I did not use a cp filter or photoshop to saturate the colours, I think my camera white balance went a bit mad but I kind of like it!! The "new" Flamborough lighthouse (actually built in 1806) stands guard as a silent sentinel, protecting shipping off Flamborough Head. Less silently, the fog horn station, perched on the very cliff, sounds the arrival of fog and frets. The lighthouse was built by John Matson of Bridlington without the use of scaffolding, is 85 feet tall and stands atop a chalk cliff 170 feet high. The lamp mechanism rotates constantly on a bed of mercury. Further back from the coast is the old Beacon light tower, dating from circa 1674, and the only known example in England. Recent restoration work has cast doubt on whether a fire was ever actually lighted atop the structure. It now stands, a gleaming monument to the rightful awe in which mariners beheld the jagged, dangerous coast. Please view large!
