I Am America
by Helen BascomI am a buyer / and a seller / I am a giver / and a user
For the first time in American history there will be a Democratic Party Candidate for President who is either a Black male or a White female running against a White male Republican Party Candidate. Never mind the hate speech both Clinton and Obama have sparked by their bid for the nomination. I can now tell my son that this is America where little boys and girls, of any race or religion, can grow up to be President ( I hope). America is a land of diversity and of contradiction. / MCN: B64-RW1A-9461

Fifty States in alphabetical order as the American Flag

These are images of flags that I took on our last trip. In this country, there are flags everywhere! On houses, store fronts, businesses. Some are huge on tall poles, and some are smaller. Some are in groups of several. There are flags in the town square, flags on cars, flags just about any place you can imagine. Some flags represent the military, and others are state flags. But each one represents something that is sacred and something that we hold very dear…..... “FREEDOM”! “Lord, let us STAY free”....!!! AMEN!!!! /

He was willing to give his life for these colors. / But, in the end, he did not die like the others. / His eyes were so bright and ready to defend, / Our country whose heart was in it to win. / He came home weak and weary, / The years in the hospital, so dark and dreary. / Every man from his unit is dead, / But not him, he is tied to his bed. / Mysterious illness killing him from the inside out, / But that is not something we are allowed to talk about. / The doctors pretend there is nothing to find, / Send him home, because it’s all in his mind. / He still smiles when he sees these colors, / He prays for the families of the others, / His heart is still pounding like a soldier. / That will never change, only get older. Dedicated to my wonderful husband…

Two Ferris Wheels turning on a mid summer’s night; from a series: Sunset on the Small Town Carnival. Owing to the rise of mega-parks and high liability insurance, small town carnivals are rapidly disappearing. Whenever possible i try to document this vanishing aspect of the Twentieth Century American landscape. The original image was shot at 1/15th with a camera flash and 2 remote strobes. The long exposure shows motion and the flash freezes detail. I used opposing color filters on the remotes to get better depth in the subject. In post processing I used a combination of effects from both Illustrator and PhotoShop. The big trick was getting the file size down by rasterizing my AIs in PS and reopening them in AI and re-saving as a vector.
