One of my favourite portraits of my Dad, doing what he loves more then anything else in the world fishing. If he could he’d spend every day fishing, as it is he sometimes wets a line three or four times a day. On this occasion I decided to get up early and document him enjoying his sport. This is the result, it has special sentimental value to me, but I felt like sharing it as something different to what I’ve been posting recently.

Colourful houses stacked onto the hillside around Brixham harbour in Torbay, South Devon, with the setting sun perfectly complimenting the illuminated shopfronts on the harbourside. acrylic on paper 14”x17” / Dancing in lighted pools of Jello-textured neon. “That’s the way to do it,” an old stranger called to the young man who, being suddenly aware of what he was doing, stopped, looked over his shoulder and glanced down at the ragged multi-colored sheet that was pulled tightly around his shoulders. He leaned back and peered up at the sun. Smoke rose from the side of a brick building and the odor or ginger floated through the air. The source of both puzzled him, as he remembered distinctly thinking he was the only person in the world just a few moments before. The old man smiled a toothless smear of flabby lips and bowed down to the dancing youth, who smiled back, jiggled aimlessly for a few seconds on thin, scratched legs and then sat down on a patch of grass in from of a building that had been painted by clowns. The young man pulled back the corner of his gown of rainbow hues and let out his heart, which had been beating all along, but in being freed, started to do a dance all of its own, though it had no legs. It also sang, which surprised the young man as he had always thought he was mute.

Taken at Kempenfelt Bay, Lake Simcoe, Barrie, Ontario Canada on Monday June 2nd/08. Leaning over the docks I noticed this school of minnows that kept dispersing and rejoining in intricate patterns in the water. My husband did not think I should upload this to RB but I find it an interesting abstract of the underwater world. The North Sea at Whitby. The Herring boats at misty dawn, / To get the details of the boats correct, I’ve used a Victorian photo as the subject. I liked the very hard pen ink lines of the foreground, contrasting with the soft, misty, wet-in-wet background. 90 lb watercolour, medium rough paper. / 12”x8”

Angler fish really are quite remarkable creatures! They live in the deep deep sea, further down than the light can reach, so to lure their prey in total darkness, they have rigged up a system of light emitting devices. They are not turned on here (as he is in the light, and they use up a lot of power so he only turns them on when he is hungry). Watercolour, chalk pastel, ink, conte on canvas.

Another in the Masters series. / This is the centre part of a long panoramic watercolour. By Thomas Bush Hardy, 1895. I’ve moved some of the boats to be closer together, as my version is a small painting, 10×7 inches, on rough Bockingford tinted cream paper, 140lb. I will be painting the full length seascape in the future.

My version of a Thomas Bush Hardy (1842-97). From an 1895 watercolour of Ramsgate Harbour. A panoramic shaped painting, 23” x 10”. / Hand-made, 140lb rough paper. Over 20 hours work. Multiple layers of semi-transparent and opaque watercolour, and white zinc gouache for highlights. Viewing in larger size is necessary.
