I took this picture last winter in West Pennant, Nova Scotia Canada. This sunset silhouette was photographed from the Town Green, looking toward the Lady Nelson Wharf on the south bank of the Hastings River in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia , at the start of a lovely autumn evening. Originally I was after the fishermen and a couple of pelicans cruising around waiting for some fish scraps. I made a shot of that, one of a float plane, (see “The Akuna Comes Home”) and also one of a couple of kayaks paddling past. Then along came the tinny with a couple of fishermen and with the light from the setting it was just begging to be shot. With a silhouette in mind I chose the 1/500sec Shutter Speed in Shutter priority to hopefully freeze any motion, knowing that with the focal distance I would be given the f.4.3 Aperture for hopefully a good exposure for such a scene. / Looks like it worked! Because of the glare from the water and the very bright area of sky where the sun was setting, the ISO was set to 100 and the White Balance to Sunny. / Spot Metering and Centre Focussing were preset, (as always) and from checking the Histogram after an earlier test shot, no Exposure Compensation was necessary. I pre-focussed on an area of bright water between the pylons, framed the shot, gently squeezed the trigger when the plane was between the pylons and ….. here it is! Lakes entrance is a fishing port and tourist town located on the Southeastern coast of Victoria, Australia. It is near a natual channel which connects the Gippsland Lakes to Bass Straight. The town has been a popular holiday destination for generations of Victorians, yet has managed to retain its smalltown rural charm. Surfing on the nearby Ninety Mile Beach is a popular attraction, as is fishing from the many piers and bridges in the area. Family entertainment such as minigolf and the popular Shell Museum cater to all ages. This sunset was truly one of the most magnificent I’ve ever seen. Everyone in the town stopped to watch the spectacle and I shot many dozens of photos, trying to capture the glorious warm golden light that flooded the river. This is also my most successful attempt at a High Dynamic Range photo. I took three exposures at different settings to try and capture a broader range of detail in the highlights and shadows, and manually merged them together in photoshop.
I took this shot in one of the many outport communities along Newfoundland’s Avalon Penninsula. There were so many of these crabpots stacked along side many different sheds. / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography /
A Photoshop stained glass rendition of a wharf. This work has received an order of magnitude more viewings than all my other work. It must therefore be my “masterpiece”.
This image was created at the Apollo Bay Docks early in 2008, went here for a holiday just as I was getting into Photography. I went down to the docks just as a storm was rolling in and it made for some interesting weather conditions! This pic was created from one raw file. I changed the exposures in Lightroom and then merged 3 images using Photomatix, increased the blue and green saturation levels in Lightroom and added a bit of contrast. This is the result! This is my most viewed image on RedBubble Click here for my other images of Victoria

I took this shot of the marina… it was cold, wet and foggy
I’m not a beach person, never have been, but after reading Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s Gift from the Sea which was written on Sanibel/Captiva Island, Florida, I had a strong urge to go there. My husband and I took a belated 37th wedding anniversary trip to the islands which we thoroughly enjoyed. The sunrises and sunsets were a joyous sight for us, and this photo which I’ve titled “Last Light” is among my favorites as it symbolizes the way people cling to the last rays of light on the beach, squeezing in every available moment at the seashore. The area in the distance was a gathering place for fishermen who continued to cast till they could see no more.

Canon 40D / EF-S 17-85mm @17mm / f/5.6 1/6 sec exposure. Shot taken at 7am on a cold winters morning earlier this year. Thought I should share it. It seems to sum up what living in Hobart is all about. Sold Matted Print
