Photograph was taken at Osaka aquarium during my visit to Japan in 2006 . I used a Nikon D70 and a 50mm 1.4 lens. Camera set in apperture priority at F2.0. Shutter speed 1/40. There was quite strong overhead lighting in the tank. Focus was difficult because the tank was a round shape. I took quite a few shots but this one was the most appealing in terms of the way the jellies lined up. Credit is also to Sophie who was waiting patiently as I was taking the 100’s of photographs over three hours at the aquarium. She did well – and kept her complaining to a minimum because she could see that I was enjoying myself. Must be love

The meaning of mandala comes from the Sanskrit word for both “CIRCLE” and “CENTRE” Even though it may be dominated by other geometric shapes like squares or triangles, a mandala will always remain a concentric (CIRCLE) structure. Mandalas offer balancing visual elements, symbolizing unity and harmony. The meanings of individual mandalas is usually different and unique to each mandala. For some, the goal of the mandala is to serve as a tool on one’s spiritual journey as it symbolizes cosmic and psychic order. For others, the mandala is used as a counter-balancing mechanism of one’s own psyche, (The spirit or soul) and a way for us to focus or meditate our way into becoming a whole person.

I took this picture a couple of years ago at the beach of Marina di Grosseto, Tuscany, Italy. / This is a fine example I think of how a fisheye lens can completely change the feeling of an ordinary scene. The subject is simply some surf on the seashore, captured from a distance of not more than a foot. / The original picture is a Fuji Velvia 50 Iso medium format slide. This image was created at the Apollo Bay Docks early in 2008, went here for a holiday just as I was getting into Photography. I went down to the docks just as a storm was rolling in and it made for some interesting weather conditions! This pic was created from one raw file. I changed the exposures in Lightroom and then merged 3 images using Photomatix, increased the blue and green saturation levels in Lightroom and added a bit of contrast. This is the result! A child of the sea, without a soul and forever a child/fish. I am curious about the ocean, about the human connection with the sea through evolution. All these dreams, myths and faerytales hint at something much more deeper. / When I swim in the ocean there is a hypnotic silence that complements the raw, wild power of the wind and water. / Although my heart beats rapidly I feel the silence and it’s familiar calming. Despite a gentle yet insistent reminder from my lungs that I need to breathe air, I feel the pull of the ocean. *I’m experimenting with backgrounds, I’m starting to feel I should move forward with my pencil drawings, imbue some emotion with colour/fabric/textute etc. Any sugguestions would be welcome.

/ Nikon D60~ 55/200 / Mexico Jan/2009 Snowy Egret / Egretta thula / Length: 22 to 26 inches Wingspan: 46 inches Seasonality: Summer / Migrant / ID Keys: Black legs with contrasting yellow feet, black bill, all white plumage The elegant snowy egret was killed by the thousands in the 1800’s for its long, lacy breeding plumage, which was used for women’s hats and other clothing. It has recovered both in range and numbers since that time. Of the white egrets found in South Dakota, the Snowy Egret can be identified by its size (smaller than the Great Egret), it’s yellow feet contrasting with black legs. Habitat: Prefers large sloughs or marshes, sometimes edges of ponds or lakes. / Diet: Varies, but includes fish, crustaceans, insects, frogs, lizards, snakes, rodents, snails, and worms. / Behavior: Uses a variety of foraging techniques. They will often actively wade through shallow waters, chasing prey that is startled by the movement. They will also stand still in shallow water, waiting for prey to approach. Snowy Egrets will also forage on dry land, usually in search of insects. / Nesting: June and July / Breeding Map: Breeding bird survey map / Song: Generally silent / Migration: Birds in the interior of the country migrate to U.S. coastal areas, Mexico, and Central America in the fall. / Similar Species: Cattle Egret, Great Egret, immature Little Blue Heron. Numbers are still far below historical levels, however.

“Floating on Clouds” was shot in Goulds Newfoundland Canada. This is The Dory in natural light. I was talking to a friend about shooting “The Dory” and “Floating on Clouds” and how I used a polarizer to bring out the clouds on the water (as seen here) and removed it and used a flash to shoot “The Dory”. I was wondering in hindsight what I would have come up with if I had used the polarizer and flash at the same time. I know I would have given up about up to two stops with the filter which would have meant a slower shutter speed and the boat was moving, ever so slightly, so it may not have worked out? But maybe next time, live and learn!
