The tide was out leaving the wonderful colourful fishing boats in St. Ives Harbour waiting for it to return. / St. Ives is a great place to visit, it has a great beach, shops, fish & chips, pasty everything you will need for a great holiday or day trip, it even has a rail link. Colourful houses stacked onto the hillside around Brixham harbour in Torbay, South Devon, with the setting sun perfectly complimenting the illuminated shopfronts on the harbourside. After dropping my daughter to work early one morning I decided to visit the ancient part of Plymouth, the Barbican. It’s such a picturesque place, visited by many tourists. There are many wonderful photo-opportunities here, and I hope to share a few, especially some that may not be the norm from tourists. What I like about this photo is the clear reflection and detail in both the water and the boats. I’d love to know what you all think of this picture. Regards, Don. Mevagissey is another of my favourite little Cornish Fishing villages, situated in St. Austell Bay on the South coast of the county. Still a thriving fishing port but over recent years it has become a popular holiday destination and quite a number of the old fisherma’s cottages around the harbour are now used as Summer holiday homes with a view of the harbour and bay. /

Taken in beautiful late evening light just a few weeks before the catastrophic flood hit the old fishing village in August 2004. It all seems so tranquil here but few people could ever have imagined the scene of devastation when over four inches of rain fell in half and hour on that day, many centuries old houses were washed away, dozens of cars and vans were washed out to sea like little toys in a torrent that was way above the level of the outer harbour wall, thankfully nobody lost their life as a massive scale rescue plucked survivors from the rooftops of the houses by helicopter. The village has now been virtually rebuilt but at any time a repeat flood could just as easily happen, it makes you wonder what is happening to our climate. Another in the Masters series. / This is the centre part of a long panoramic watercolour. By Thomas Bush Hardy, 1895. I’ve moved some of the boats to be closer together, as my version is a small painting, 10×7 inches, on rough Bockingford tinted cream paper, 140lb. I will be painting the full length seascape in the future.

My version of a Thomas Bush Hardy (1842-97). From an 1895 watercolour of Ramsgate Harbour. A panoramic shaped painting, 23” x 10”. / Hand-made, 140lb rough paper. Over 20 hours work. Multiple layers of semi-transparent and opaque watercolour, and white zinc gouache for highlights. Viewing in larger size is necessary.

I never tire of visiting this beautiful old fishing harbour on Cornwall’s South coast, nothing seems to have changed there in the many years I’ve been visiting it, the old fishermen’s cottages surrounding the harbour are full of old world charm and the narrow cobbled streets are too narrow for cars, the perfect place to get away from the pressure of modern city and busy town life.
