  • DETAIL: “The Studio & Spirits Dream” Oil on Canvas. / I spent the last decade uprooted and on the road. I landed in a barn for awhile on a millionaire’s horse ranch, eventually turning the tack room into a studio that was liveable, enabling me to move out of the ranch’s bunkhouse (12 X 12 foot room with sink) and take up barn residence. It was a wonderful place for 4 years with horse pasture – about 200 occupants – out the door. Goats, sheep, mule named Corizon and Rambo the Ram in stalls and paddock on the other side, the Santa Lucia range all misty , mooned, sunned, gusted, and Milky Wayed before me. And it was the first functional studio I’d had in years. I wrote. And I painted. / This dream, this studio I painted there, is crowded with things I loved and hadn’t seen in ages, stored on the other side of America. Over filled with people I’d loved who’d died. With animals alive and not, who still owned my heart. With a chair from my twenties that no longer existed and the dream of my own bed again where such dreams could populate my nights. The cats who survived the move from Brooklyn then to Virginia’s wilderness then across country are on my bed, and some who departed before we got there, here too. My wonderful chocolate Lab – Rodin – is on alert at the bed’s end. A woodstove I’d seen once that would restore life to this heatless barn (I eventually got a kerosene heater). Some of my many thousands of books I carry with me that prop up my life are here, and all the intimate angels swinging through the undone work, the ready easel, the heart’s workplace. • Bela,as a Rotweiller pup with her first chew. Rescued from the back of a van, she had been weened early and had been ‘caged’ in a van as the owner travelled the local area selling pet supplies. A very special dog as she timed her arrival with our tenth wedding anniversary and truly settling ın Turkey. I had had Rottweiler rescue dogs in the UK and had fallen in love with the breed – Roxy and Clyde are dear departed friends. She mated with Troy in January 2009 and produced a wonderful litter of pups: they were born on the anniversary of Clyde’s passing a year ealier. From the litter we intended to keep a boy and name him Clyde after the dog we rehomed with friends in the UK and possibly a girl (Mollie). Sadly, we fell in love and kept four …Mollie, Bonnie and Fluff. Bela is now neutered. The Rottweiler, or Rottweil Metzgerhund (“Butchers Dog”), is a “medium to large size, stalwart dog” breed originating in Germany as a herding dog. It is a hardy and very intelligent breed. Rottweilers also worked as draught dogs, pulling carts to carry meat and other products to market. “Rottweiler breeders aim at a dog of abundant strength, black coated with clearly defined rich tan markings, whose powerful appearance does not lack nobility and which is exceptionally well suited to being a companion, service and working dog.” The Rottweiler was kept busy in these traditional roles until the mid-19th century when railroads replaced droving for getting livestock to market. Although there are still Rottweilers working stock all over the world, many other roles have been found for this versatile breed. During the first and second World Wars, Rottweilers were put into service in various roles including as messenger, draught and guard dogs. Currently they are often used as search and rescue, assistance, guide dogs for the blind, guard and police dogs in addition to their traditional roles. Although an extremely versatile breed used in recent times for many other purposes, the Rottweiler is first and foremost one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of herding breeds. A multi-faceted herding and stock protection dog of exceptional ability, it is capable of working all kinds of livestock under a wide variety of conditions. The breed is an ancient one, whose history stretches back to the Roman Empire. In those times, the legions traveled with their meat on the hoof and required the assistance of working dogs to herd the cattle. One route the army traveled was through Württemberg and on to the small market town of Rottweil. The principal ancestors of the first Rottweilers during this time was supposed to be the Roman droving dog, local dogs the army met on its travels, and dogs with molosser appearance coming from England and The Netherlands. This region eventually became an important cattle area, and the descendants of the Roman cattle dogs proved their worth in both driving and protecting the cattle from robbers and wild animals. However, by the end of the 19th century as railroads became the main method for moving stock to market, the breed had declined so much that in 1900 there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil. • The largest female in a litter of nine: the parents being Bela and Troy (also featured in my portfolio). Taken with Sony Cybershot 9 May 2009. The hairiest of the Rotties ….a gorgeous girl who ‘knows it’. • This is Isaac, he was rescued from the local pound here in Leitchfield Ky. We rescued him at 14 weeks. Isaac is an Australian Shepherd. He is partially deaf and almost blind. He is the victim of very bad breeding , which is the reason for so many problems. At first I thought he was a mix but when I showed him to a breeder here she told me that he was pure, but the victim of a lousy breeder. I was told he is what they call a “Lethal White” which is the result of breeding a merle to a merle that can produce some beautiful pups but around 25% of pups will have problems as Isaac does but many times much worse. They will destroy those pups at birth, therefore the name! He was left on a chain at 9 weeks of age when his previous owners just moved away and left him there. Their next door neighbor didn’t help him or call anyone for 4 days. Poor little guy was skin and bones with no food or water left for him. The day he picked me out, was the first time I had ever been to our local shelter, went there looking for a female adult large breed such as a Doberman, because I had just lost my best girl of 19 years. I felt him looking at me even before I saw him, fell in love with him, went home told my husband about him, he made it clear to me that I must have lost my mind, because Isaac was everything that I swore I would never own. He was male, plus coat, medium size, puppy, well that went well. Was there early the next morning to take him home, I found out that day was to be his last day there, lucky lucky us! He is the most wonderful little guy we could ever hope for. He thinks we are pretty cool too!
