The Symphony of Fire at Cape Town’s Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is the largest of its kind on the African continent, and it’s a light and sound extravaganza. The pyrotechnic displays, choreographed to music, are painstakingly prepared by professional teams representing their countries. The planning can take up to 2 months, with an additional 3 months to make the custom-built fireworks. Each team is given just 3 days to set up their computer-controlled displays, consisting of approximately 3 500 fireworks. Then, it’s showtime! This year, the line-up was South Africa, Spain and Canada The sheer size and scope of the flares made them look like magical giant chrysanthemums and carnations against the velvet night sky.
