Wenches, three of them, wide and wicked / Strutting along Bleecker like it was a red carpet / Thick thighs in zebra stripes, caramel skin glowing / Five paces behind, I fell in love / and followed. I think I tiptoed / I know they swaggered Spat words so raw and raucous / Stretched by the Brooklyn accent, warmed by the love between them / Even as they tore into each other with language that held me bound You callin’ me white? / Hand on hip, head cocked / Girlfriend, look at your man / Her eyes narrow, my eyes widen / He’s the whitest motherfucka I ever met / .....that boy’s a pussy Laughter so dirty I stumbled, blushed / Never felt so unripe. The solace of the fire escape / Hands black with grime and ears ringing with sirens / Watching over CBGBs with longing The Bowery invited and I finally accepted / I tried to strut my “don’t mess with me” gait I couldn’t pull it off They messed with me Street preachers spewing forth fire and brimstone / On the corner of Joey Ramone Place / Hostility for lone little white girls with pagan tattoos / Trying to strut A finger pointed rudely towards me / Yo baby! / My chin stuck bravely towards him / Yeah, what? More brass than I felt, more bile than I wanted / Taste of metal in my mouth as his finger inched closer / Resting on my snake, bold and curved / Looped around my neck, nestled on my collarbone / Keeping me safe A flash of gold teeth, a grin, a grunt / Nice bling / And off, shuffling back to the steps / And me, scurrying back to the fire escape / To watch from a distance. Few days later, few streets over / Lower East Side longing / For a man so clichéd I groaned / Even as I craved. Arms laden with pipes, muscles pulling tight / Sweat sliding down the curve of his calf / Into his workboots / Straight out of the Village People / Hardhat included I could’ve watched for hours Sorry honey! / You should just holler – get the hell outta my way! Stepping past with a sway / Hips rolling, heels clicking / Words thrown over my shoulder I can’t…..I’m too Australian Laughter thrown back, loud and lascivious / Trailing me along the streets of New York / / No sugar…..you’re too much! Felt myself ripen

So for the third time since Christmas I tried to make dinner. I had good intentions. Really. / James even trusted me to do it without supervision. The art of cooking is one I have never properly mastered. I often tell people that I can’t cook and they always reply with “sure you can” or some other weak encouragement. Well…. Let’s just say, there were some fires. BIG fires. “Oh heck my landlord will never forgive me” type fires. And now I’m playing on redbubble and James is cooking dinner. And they all lived happily ever after.

The fires are "almost" out.

This is a relative thought as what is still burning would be big news at another time. 1500 homes have been lost so far in various communities, more damaged and some lives lost as well. You may ask how can this happen? It starts with the dream of having a home in the country. The “country” in Southern California is usually in the chapparral (brush) or in the trees of the mountains. At this time of year the plants that grow in the “country” is referred to as fuel by the firemen. So think of your home sitting in a pool of scenic gasoline… It is allowed, desired and the envy of all to live this way. It may cost more to insure but we want to live like them because most of the time it is cleaner, more beautiful and a secluded way to live. You often own horses, grow groves of some kind and just love living in what passes for the wilderness here. There will be a debate once again as to how this kind of fire can be prevented or better protection provided. The focus will focus on whether the state or the local cities should pay for more firemen and aircraft. Both should pay more and therein lies the problem. Many in these types of communities don’t want higher taxes. The folks in San Diego county are particularly against them. Even if the taxes were paid and the army of firemen increased and an air force of planes existed to fight the fires, you then have the problem of dealing with an the ever increasing fuel load in the natural areas as the years go by. This could be managed with controlled burns, but then the liability lies with the Government and opens itself open to lawsuits, when things go wrong. So now you know why this is happening. We are fine so far. We live in a track home, which means we are “safer”, but homes of this type do burn up as well if not as often as homes in the country. I would hate to lose my home and all the “things” we have collected, created and nurtured (my garden). As an artist who makes things, I am a materialist at heart and it is easy for me to give these things meaning. A life’s work is just that and I really feel for those who have lost their’s. /

In case you haven’t heard in the news, I live in Goleta, California where the Gap fire is burning. our house is currently only 1-2 miles away from different fire locations of the fire that has taken dramatic change in the last 24 hours to the worst. We were issued warnings and if the situation will keep deteriorating, we may have to evacuate. Smoke and ashes are all over where I live. My car is already loaded with the essentials, (pics, negs, documents) and we play the waiting game now. / I mannaged to get some images which can be seen a short quick time movies here / Eyal

I got my cards today, lots of them. Twenty from you all and about a hundred of mine. I also received a wonderful large laminated print of “Yosemite Day” which by the way will be a gift for someone in my family Christmas. The card quality is indeed very good though on some I have questions as to how they determine the crop. I would like to see more control over that aspect of the operation. I would like to see all of my image on a card when possible and it looks possible.I also sold a T-Shirt and one of my images “Navajo Falls” as a laminated print. I live in Southern California which some of you may have heard is on fire! Yes though whole place is burning up and the winds are making sure no one feels safe tonight. There is nothing pleasant about the “Santa Ana” winds, 8 % humidity, trees and dust all over the place, closed freeways and streets, and there is something about this wind that makes you feel on edge, making you meaner and crankier! Not to mention homes lost and lives destroyed… Thanks to all those who fave and watch me and share their thoughts about my work. You all have put so many ideas into my head that I will have to live another lifetime to pursue them all. I will say “Art on Line is not a Waste of Time”. It is the best thing that has happened for artists ever! Enjoying art here is so much better than participating in the self esteem destroying commercial art gallery system, where you lose more money and get less for what you do spend. I think so anyway… :)

Amazing night. You can now see flames leaping hundreds of feet into the air on the first visible range in Cachagua, from the hill in front of the post office. That’s about 25 miles from town. Worry about the skillful jump ability of flame. / The sun was setting, a massive cloud of smoke over the valley lit bright pink, totally astounding. It’s getting closer. / We now have a full tent camp for the firefighters set up in the old Carmel Valley airstrip, 500 tents, men, equipment, kitchens, engines. Awesome. They’re great guys. Signs are appearing on fences “Thank you Fire Fighters!” / I went up at sunset. As it grew dark, lights on the camp grounds popped on illuminating the field. Neighbors drove and walked up with their dogs and kids. We looked at maps and got updates. People pointed, talked old stories, asked over and over if the guys needed anything. The community response universally so far is WE ARE SO GLAD YOU’RE HERE!! Zero sense of invasion or imposition. We may be getting national guard or army here too. It’s pretty intense. / So much of Big Sur burned, you just want to cry and cry. And so much saved too, very few houses went considering the size and ferocity of the fires. It sounds like all the resorts and beautiful places in Big Sur got saved, like Ventana, Nepenthe, Esalen, Deetjens, H Miller. Mostly from people refusing to leave and stamping out cinders falling from the sky with their feet! I know it’s going to be hard to look at again. They’ve let people go back to their homes and land, lifted the evacuations from there and Palo Colorado, which did not get burnt after all from what I understand. It’s a bit like hearing gossip and fiction with a bit of truth. All of it drama, some of it actually happening. / Regina and Pat on Tassajara Road have not evacuated yet. They watch the flames shooting off the ridges from their bed at night. Ty is holding firm in Trampa Canyon. Mike’s posting wonderful blogs on his Cachagua Store site with pretty much daily updates, news of crews coming in, feeding the fire guys, songs and beer and attaboys. We’re apparently getting about fifty volunteers from Australia and New Zealand. THANK YOU!! Guys here from Minnesota and New York and Oregon. It’s a thoroughly remarkable experience on every level. / Zero sense so far we’ll get evacuated from the Village, it’s still far from us. Depending on wind direction, you’re scared one day and calm the next. / Late afternoon and into the evening yesterday a huge wet fog moved in from the coast, and by nightfall had covered Carmel Valley. Good news, we were all glad to see it. The weathermen are all fucked up. Predicting heat waves and cooling spells simultaneously, reigning hysteria. Middays out here are hot, in the 100’s. / There’s a kind of stimulated kinship when you meet folks, everybody on a high of adrenalin and emotion, nobody knowing where this damn thing is going to move. Some said the shooting ridge flames last night were from the backfires being lit. They talk about our mountains as the place to hold the line, that ridge is where we make our stand, this canyon may go, that point is in danger, using names unfamiliar to locals….it’s like being in a general’s tent with warfare plotted out on maps. As Mike Jones said in one of his blogs, you get an intimacy and new respect for the land with the google terrain maps you haven’t had from living here. / We’re all in pretty good spirits it seems to me. While it’s frightening to think of the damn thing raging out of control and sweeping the whole central coast, it seems unlikely. I think they’re getting a handle on it, figuring out how to fight it. It’s rough terrain. But we’re strong. And, of course, you knew that. / Best to you all, and heartfelt thanks for your good wishes. / Barbara

Being Traumatized in Kansas

As every good Kansas child knows tornadoes are not something to ignore. Stormphotonet’s pictures have inspired me to write about one of my Kansas bad weather experiences. After she was widowed for the second time, my grandmother moved from Edmund, Oklahoma to Fredonia to be closer to our family. Now, my grandmother was a Home Economics teacher and quite a beauty for most of her life. Along with her beauty came a load of insecurity about her looks. She would never let herself be put in any situation where she would be seen without makeup and very high style clothing. Her grandchildren all called her Mawzie as my sister, the oldest of our generation, was unable to pronounce grandmother as a toddler, and somehow Mawzie became the family word for grandmother. When she moved to Fredonia, she bought a house two doors down the street from my parents house. Unfortunately, it resided on Button Creek, and all of the houses on the creek were subject to flooding and being struck by lightening. When I was 6, the highlight of my week was to spend Friday night with my grandmother at her house. This particular Friday night, we were asleep, but heard the tornado sirens start up. When those sirens started up you moved! It wasn’t raining, but I remember a terrific thunder storm. I got up dressed and was sitting in the living room waiting for Mawzie to finish getting ready, so that we could hurry down to my parents basement as the houses on the creek didn’t have basements. I was sitting in a chair directly across the room from the wall phone. All of the sudden, there was a horrible crack of thunder, and ball of fire flew out of the phone and rolled across the living room rug toward me. A second later my mother burst through the front door wearing nothing but her nightgown, grabbed me by the arm and took off running. My feet didn’t touch the sidewalk the whole way home. To get the full importance of this move on my mother’s part you have to realize that she’s not a person to move or exercise. She’s spent her whole life avoiding any sort of physical exertion. She certainly wasn’t a person to run around town wearing nothing but a nightgown. Fifty years later I can still feel her grip on my arm as she dragged me down the street. No tornado that night, but that ball of fire still haunts scares me.

Late in the afternoon of 8 July 1892, a small fire broke out in a St. John’s stable after a lit pipe or match fell into a bundle of hay. Although containable at first, the flames quickly spread due to dry weather conditions, a disorganized fire department, and poor planning on the part of city officials. Within hours, the fire had destroyed almost all of St. John’s, leaving 11,000 people homeless and causing $13 million in property damage. Here are some photos from the provincial archives of the city in ruins after the fire: / This image shows damaged buildings on the south side of Water Street, the city’s business district / Many residents stored their valuables in the Anglican Cathedral, believing it could withstand the flames. / Basilica of St. John The Baptist and St. John’s after the Great Fire. Notice all the chimney stacks standing alone all over the city. / This is my neighbourhood in ruins. Here is a pdf of an article from the New York Times archives dated 1892 about the fire: / THE GREAT ST. JOHN’S FIRE; STORIES TOLD BY MEN WHO SAW THE CITY BURN. THE HEAT FELT SIXTY MILES AT SEA—CLOTHING NEEDED BY FIFTEEN THOUSAND HOMELESS CITIZENS _ WOMEN AND CHILDREN HUDDLED TOGETHER UNDER ROUGH SHEDS.

A sure fire way to draw a crowd...

If something is going to draw a crowd in Saudi Arabia, then it’s not going to be me alone, but a photo shoot of a heavily pregnant woman on top of the sand dunes with more female flesh on show than has been seen here in.. well, ever… then, that’s going to do it! Having been asked recently to do some shots by my friends who are expecting their first baby in the next couple of months, I was thrilled to take up the challenge and do my best for them. Wanting to try something a little different and relate the whole experience to their time out here in Saudi, I suggested an outdoor shoot at the red sand dunes, 45 minutes drive out of the city. I had been out there a couple days earlier, to scout around and find some decent dunes to shoot at, thinking it wouldn’t be the greatest thing to ask a heavily pregnant woman to struggle out into the desert, without checking things out first.. Anyway, the area has become a bit of an escape from the city for expats and locals alike.. lots of camps set up, renting out quad bikes by the hour and the bedouin guys impressing all with their duning skills! A short walk around and I managed to find some dunes that were quiet, secluded and unspoiled by tyre tracks. Perfect! I guess I really underestimated the effect of something a little different to the norm, such as a photo shoot would have in Saudi.. throw in the fact that the model is heavily pregnant, wearing a dress to show off all those great curves and bear a lot more flesh than average, then it becomes a different matter all together! It wasn’t long before the crowds started gathering! Undetered, we plowed on, model posing elegantly and the sound of my shutter taking over from the sound of the quad bikes, as they pulled up to take a look. I was in my element! It was only a few years back that we were receiving warnings from the embassies here to stay alert, be vigilant and try not to draw attention to yourself, whilst all around all hell was breaking loose.. Oh, how things have changed, it was a great experience and I’m sure the locals loved the show too! For my first request at doing a shoot, I was nervous as hell at getting the right shot, but I soon got into it and had a great time.. I’ve been going through the photos today, developing some and sending them off to my friends to see.. and initial feedback is very good! With any luck, I’ll be posting a couple on here some time soon… Thanks to the proud father to be, Cyrus for taking this shot…

Anyone bring the marshmallows?

Today I arose to disaster. I won’t bore you with the details, but it’s a complete mess. / A lot of you know a little of my cheerful adoration for disaster. / Some of you reading this know a little about the mess I’m talking about. Some think you do, and some couldn’t care less. They say that having a fantail (or Piwakawaka,) come into your home is a sign of things coming together. / Sometimes it signifies death, sometimes birth. / When I got up, I had two fantails fighting in my dining room this morning. I suffered death on this day, a long long time ago. / This is a day of memorial for a lot of people close to me. / Closer to the surface, today is a beautiful day. / Today I know where I am and where I want to be. / The clouds have opened, and I’m going to go out and get a tan. They say that the ultimate fertiliser for the forest is fire. / Burn it to the ground, and it comes back twice as strong – it just takes a while. I feel good about being alive today and I will play in the ashes of all I have burnt. / I want to get as filthy as I can, so I can wash the gray scum from my body. My eyes feel like I’ve been crying for hours on end, bawling into my chest – but I haven’t. / It’s just the phantom pain of a lost limb. / I feel an emotional appendage, severed from my body, though still very much attached in my mind. Oh boy, is it itchy. / I think this itch is going to be my saviour today, and I will roll it around in my mouth and savour every second. / That ethereal itch is going to be the fire-blanket I’ll throw over the ache of loss. Ironic, isn’t it? Loss is a concept. / It is not tangible. / It is not real. / Nothing is ever lost, it just changes shape. / The things we thought we had, once lost, become a tangible lack. / Sometimes they won’t just fuck off and set fire to themselves like we wish. I set fire to someone today. / Not ‘today’, per-say – it was another day with a similar bunch of numbers for a name. Today I will paint myself with their ashes so as to hide the true colour of my gaunt face, reminding me of the fire I tried in vain to light last night. Ok, so – time to cosy up next to a raging brushfire of pain and loss, and scratch the itch of a phantom limb. / The smoke’s going to get in my eyes, and tears are going to well up. The tears won’t fall. They’ll become part of the caked up detritus that hides my feeling of deep lacking Sweet as.

Fire fighters were finally able to start tackling the fire blazing through forest on the West Coast from the ground yesterday. The fire has so far eaten up 18600 hectares of button grass and old growth (Tarkine) forest since it began on Saturday. / The fire’s west front is burning areas previously burnt by the 2003 bushfire, but the east flank is burning pure untouched rainforest. / At the moment protecting the Savage River mine and the Corinna township resort are the main focus. Most of the township of Corinna has been evacuated due to the smoke. / It is believed the fire started as the result of an accident. A guy crashed his vehicle, and due to the remoteness of the area, decided to set fire to his vehicle as a way to alert someone to his plight???? / Improved weather conditions are allowing fire crews to make progress on the containment of the large bushfire. / Although the fire remained uncontained, the firefighting efforts now are aiming to create secure boundaries on the western edge and also make progress on the eastern edge, although he said this will be difficult due to the risks of working in tall forests. / The Western Explorer Road remains closed to traffic and is likely to remain closed for days, due to fallen trees and the need to assess whether timber bridges have been damaged by the fire.

We were given an evacuation notice yesterday night, only to have it reversed after an hour.. Not a very pleasing experience at midnight. So far the blaze consumed more then 8000 acres and some of our friends were already forced to evacuate. We’re still in an high alert zone. Managed to get some more pics as you can see here Last images from 7/3/08 were taken only 500-2000 yards away from from my home. As a photographer the light in incredible around 7 pm. One may have the feeling it is an alien / martial landscape. Sky are glowing orange and red and the white ash falling from above can be only described as a “dirty snow”. Streets are blocked by police patrol cars, and groups of people congregate with binoculars & cameras in areas where the fires can be viewed. I wish I could go for more photography, but it doesn’t sit too well with my dear wife… :-)) / News articles about the fire are here and here / Eyal
