Famous rivers of the world. The Finke is one of the oldest known rivers. It does not flow continuously and never reaches the sea. it only flows after local downpours and it had been some years since it had last flowed here. Down in the gap between the hills on the right there is a small permanent water hole which is part of the reason for Glen Helen station. There was a reliable water source. The station is now with hotter drier weather not doing so much cattle raising, but has found the shepherding of tourists in the area a much better proposition. They do not just provide horse experience but also land rovers and personal helicopters as ways of seeing the country (none of which we could afford) as well as accommodation and food. Taken with Pentax LX camera and Pentax 28 mm shift lens on Kodachrome 200 film.

A group of European tourists got bogged trying to access Palm Valley in the Northern Territory back in 2003. 2 hours drive west of Alice Springs, along Larapinta Drive via Hermannsberg, the Finke Gorge National Park and its surrounding area has always held cultural significance to the Western Arrernte people. It now also holds holiday significance to this group of Europeans! It’s a good thing we came along with our Landcruiser and were able to pull them out as we saw no-one else in the park for 5 days. The bus driver (an Australian) was not talking; we assumed, due to severe embarrasment…only 4WDs are suppose to be in the area (last I heard Toyota Coasters are not 4WDs?).

The Finke River is one of the largest rivers in central Australia. Its source is in the Northern Territory’s MacDonnell Ranges, and the name Finke River is first applied at the confluence of the Davenport and Ormiston Creeks, just north of Glen Helen [1]. From here the river meanders for approximately 600 km to the western edge of the Simpson Desert in northern South Australia.

This photo was taken on the Finke River in the outback of Australia’s Northern Territory. I was lucky enough to get this shot before the skies opened up on me.
