I don’t know that man.He doesn’t talk ,walk ,hear, see…he ’s closed to the world. His wife comes every day, she’s younger than him and I can see a lot of affection in her eyes but everybody knows she has somebody else in her life. She puts a little hat on his head ,cover him with something warm and bring him to the balcony, even if it’s cold outside. One day,at the beginning of my shift,I went to get him for super ,the hat was covering his eyes and since he couldn’t move,he looked like a Mexican taking a nap …I smiled but at the same time I couldn’t help myself thinking how much he must be raging inside cut from the world like this …in fact I WAS RAGING inside for being so helpless toward that man. / posted later …. / He died a few weeks after I took this shot, both hands never openned….....Gigi

A little girl from Mt. Elgon, Uganda tells me with a smile in her native Lugandan language, not to take her picture. This village borders the initial hot zone, near Kitum Cave, where the Ebola virus broke out back in the late 60’s and continued to baffle scientists up until the last century. Ink, some graphite and charcoal on paper. Robert Johnson was truly the grandfather of blues. Inspiring such musicians as Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters and the Rolling Stones. His music has deeply affected my love for blues and music in general. My portrait of Robert is a small tribute to the amazing body of work he produced. Through every layer of pencil and every stroke of my hand, I tried to capture the essence of Mr. Johnson onto paper. I depicted every detail in my portrait, from the old curtain hung behind him to the design on the blanket he sits on. Each pinstripe was painstakingly reproduced as well as the weathering on his guitar. My desired end result is that you will feel like you are looking at an aged photo of Robert Johnson. I believe when you truly study this piece you will hear his music and see the richness of his character portrayed in through my pencils. Hello Daddy, / Thank you for being so instrumental in my being here, I really appreciate it! You chose so well when you chose Mommy to be my mother, the nine months I spent with her were so reassuring. I could feel her love flow through my tiny little body, I could even sense it. / I must apologise for any discomfort I caused, but I was really trying to get into position to make a grand entry into the world…... and to meet you. I already know so much about you….. every time you came close close to Mommy her heart skipped a beat. I know I will love her as much as you do, and as much as she loves you! / Let those strong, gentle hands, always be there, for I will need them for the rest of my life. / Love you daddy / Gi’te
What a wonderful moment this was, almost as suspenceful as when the girl is hiding under the bed and the killer walks into the room, his feet at the foot of the bed, the girl trembling, he is about to stoop down and find her but hears a noise, is distracted and walks away. Okay, so that’s a bit of an exageration but when you, as a photographer see that perfect shot slipping away similar horrors overcome you. Bear with me while I tell you just what happened. I was in Pakistan, in the back seat of my car with my mother, the driver talking me to my father’s office after a shoot. We stop at a red light, and a man in his car two lanes across drops his hand out the window. The moment I say his adorned hand I knew this would make a perfect addition to my portfolio of hand shots. I thank God for having my camera at my side, aim and miss it. The car in the next lane moves blocking my shot. When the car finally does move out of the way the man has taken his hand in and is now fiddling with his mustache. To make a long story short, after many failed attempts and curse words muttered under my breath he finally put his hand out the window again, moments before the light turned green and I got my shot. One shot. This shot.
I’m not 100% sure what’s going on in this picture, but I have no doubt that spending his day in the house of a creepy old man wasn’t exactly the way this kid hoped things would turn out. There’s a story here, I’m just not exactly sure what it is.
