  • Macro photograph taken from a rock on the Northern Gold Coast, Qld! Taken with aperture priority, slightly adjusted contrast to make the natural colours pop out! Makes a wonderful nature abstract! This Rock Art Series was taken from the same rock, I really don’t know why these rocks had such unusual colours. I believe they may have been mined from Tamborine Mountain which is famous for its “Thunderegg” rocks. Rocks shaped like large eggs and when you cut them open reveal amazing colours and crystals! Macro photography is my passion, I love to photograph mostly bark, rock and flowers!! / /

  • From my collection: / Perception is Reality Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved Featured Art 12 June 2009 Rural Around the Globe A composite of two of my images; one of Ho’okipa Beach Maui at sunset, and one of a beautiful horse / Upcountry layered over Ho’okipa. See the person on the lava rocks below? ;) “In Xanadu did Kubla Khan / A stately pleasure-dome decree : / Where Alph, the sacred river, ran / Through caverns measureless to man / Down to a sunless sea. / So twice five miles of fertile ground / With walls and towers were girdled round : / And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills, / Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree ; / And here were forests ancient as the hills, / Enfolding sunny spots of greenery. / But oh ! that deep romantic chasm / which slanted Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover ! / A savage place ! / as holy and enchanted / As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted / By woman wailing for her daemon-lover ! / And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething, / As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing, / A mighty fountain momently was forced : / Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst / Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail, / Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher’s flail : / And ‘mid these dancing rocks at once and ever / It flung up momently the sacred river. / Five miles meandering with a mazy motion / Through wood and dale the sacred river ran, / Then reached the caverns measureless to man, / And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean : / And ‘mid this tumult Kubla heard / from far Ancestral voices prophesying war ! / The shadow of the dome of pleasure / Floated midway on the waves ; / Where was heard the mingled measure / From the fountain and the caves. / It was a miracle of rare device, / A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice ! / A damsel with a dulcimer / In a vision once I saw : / It was an Abyssinian maid, / And on her dulcimer she played, / Singing of Mount Abora. / Could I revive within me Her symphony and song, / To such a deep delight ‘twould win me, / That with music loud and long, I would build that dome in air, / That sunny dome ! / those caves of ice ! / And all who heard should see them there, / And all should cry, Beware ! Beware ! / His flashing eyes, his floating hair ! / Weave a circle round him thrice, / And close your eyes with holy dread, / For he on honey-dew hath fed, / And drunk the milk of Paradise.” ~ Samuel Taylor Coleridge – 1797

  • When Brownie was alive we’d ride our bikes through the dry heat and down the red dirt tracks, tires popping as pebbles flew from our paths, always a hot wind harsh and unfriendly. How I hated that wind. Somehow as children though, we overcome things like this, death and heat, sometimes as adults it’s harder. / At the river we’d gather the stones that had been shaped by the water that ran forever through the valley. Its a trickle now, with the years of drought that followed. But I see it as it was, a brown green snake slithering and winding, seemingly never ending. / Once the stones had been rocks and boulders, hills or cliffs by the ocean. Something for man and animal to stand on up high, or perch, bearers to things seemingly unreachable, but now they were small and worn, carried and tumbled and rounded into submissive pebbles. All semblance of might long gone. / When we had a pile we’d skim them. Counting the bounces, seeing who could throw furthest, bounce highest. Now the stones from our hands were glorious things, slicing through the air and slicking off the water, shooting and arcing. / Alive once again. Michael Douglass, 2009.

  • Nick and I were hoping to catch up with Ken Wright for a shoot, but the weather wasn’t looking good. Ken decided to sleep in, but Nick and I drove down to the coast anyway. Sat in the car while it rained and waited, and waited….then walked down to the rocks after dawn, with umbrellas….and waited some more….eventually I weakened and asked for the keys so I could start shooting…. I’m glad I did…..got some rippers, in the end! Thank goodness for the heavy clouds, makes shooting after dawn so much easier! • Black glass magic – I had gone on this shoot with a bad attitude, expecting the sky to be bland and the day to be a waste of time, and therefore I set the camera on large jpg so I wouldn’t waste too much computer space….As it turned out, I’ve managed to drag out some amazing results. This is another straight from the camera image, although I had to take it into PS to straighten the horizon…. Canon 5D Mk II, 16-35mm at 16mm, f/10, 90seconds, ISO 50, Hoya NDX400, Singh Ray 3 stop reverse grad, Lee 0.9 ND grad, tripod, cable release, lots of guessing….I should point out the red sky is enhanced by the Singh Ray filter, which seems to put a colour cast across the ND area when used in conjunction with the Lee filter…. - / SEASCAPES / NEW ZEALAND / PEOPLE

And bitter was the darkness that befell the bloomless rose. Only after this earth has been bathed in its holy baptism / shall it become the glorious garden it was truly meant to be.” excerpts from The Prophet’s Candle by Daniel Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / This is a composite of two images taken at the same coastal location on Ke’anae Peninsula at the same time stitched together with Smoky City Design – The Panorama Factory software. / Shooting Date/Time 16 April 2007 20:32:35 / Flash Off Shutter Speed 1/250 Aperture10.0 ISO 400 / Lens EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

  • I wanted to get a photograph the waterfalls in Pontneddfechan, Wales. I did some research, planned my route in the GPS and packed my kit. The chap in the waterfall centre was very helpful and was keen to tell me the proper welsh name of the waterfalls. I smiled and nodded, I still don’t have a clue to this day what he was talking about. Unfortunately I lost the map I bought and stupidly brought along my bicycle for quick access. Bad move. I had to carry my bicycle for most of the 10 miles round trip and also had to transverse a waterfall as I got stuck on the wrong side of the river and watched a load of guys in wetsuits try to walk behind the waterfalls and fail. All good fun. / This is my first attempt at taking wateralls so please be gentle. Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 50mm, f/20, 2.5 sec, ISO 50. ND filter used. Dust and scratches removed in photoshop, upped the saturation by +2 This shot is also available from a photobook collection called Rural Mementos by redtree.me © Copyright 2009 David Reid – redtree.me – All rights reserved.

  • A pretty stormy evening in Clevedon, UK so I fancied capturing some timed exposures and hoped to not get too wet. This time I had my tripod, I hope you like it. Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 24mm, f/11, .6 sec, ISO 50100. ND 9 filter used. Photomatix conversion (first time I used it) and dust and scratches removed in photoshop, chromatic abs removed by magic brush.
