Hey there kids, we here in the big red bubble floating high above the city’s spires have this irrepressible itch to make some kind of advert, a video, a short film if you will, to emphasise and explain all the magical things that redbubble can do for people, trouble is we’re up in a big red bubble floating high above the city spires and it would be completely impossible to make it up here, there’s no power sockets or even a flat surface, just bubble, lots of it. So we need your help. We want to hear ideas for a short clip, from spoof documentary to public acts of insanity, via ridiculous comedy and professional corporate clarity, it just has to grab it’s unsuspecting audience and fling them a brighter world, without giving them an awful lot of other options. At this stage in the proceedings we don’t wish to impose too many guidelines on length/style/timeframe etc. and don’t start making yet, it would be a tragedy to go and film yourself having our logo tattooed on your forehead and then find out we weren’t happy with the camera angle, we just want to hear the colourful concepts nestling within your neurons. However here are a couple of equations to ponder over while you scribble furiously: -More dangerous = Higher chance of court case = Less likely. / -Lavish three part, 9 hour sagas = One year of shooting time = More expensive = Less likely. Other than that go crazy, pitch your treatments to us and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be assisting in the making of the finest advert since that one about the fish. Oh and you might get some cash, yup cash, ahhh now you’re interested. AND when you do come up with some gems, stick them in here in the forums for a better discussion. onetonshadow

Nowadays, a lot of people have taken photos only with digital cameras, but I’ve seen more than a few express an interest in film, wondering what the fuss is all about and why people still use it. Which then raises the question, “should I try film?” I have to say, the answer is, “YES!” But Uncle Stevie, the man in the camera shop told me film is dead. / Of course he did! They make more money selling a $2,000 digital camera than selling a roll of film. A lot of consumer level films have been killed off, but for the most part the pro ranges are intact, and these are the films you want to be playing with. In fact, they’re far from gone. Fuji has continued to develop its portrait films, has introduced a brand new slide film, and has reintroduced the discontinued Velvia 50 due to high demand. But Uncle Stevie, film is too expensive! / It really depends on what you’re doing. Shooting a two day event on film is expensive, hell yeah. That’s the sort of thing where digital comes into its own. But going out on the town, taking some artistic shots, it’s not so bad. / 36 frames is plenty. No, you can’t check the viewfinder and retake the shot 100 times until you get it. But what you can do is think about what you’re doing. Really look at the surrounds, see what’s in the viewfinder, think about your aperture and shutter speed, and just nail the shot the first time. / You can buy a brand new Nikon FM10 with lens for $200US. Plenty of fully automatic cameras are for sale second hand for next to nothing. Even with buying the film and getting it processed, even getting a high res scan done, it’s a lot of rolls before you match the cost of a digital, which you’ll probably replace after 18 months in any case. I’m worried I’ll get the exposure wrong, and I won’t know without an LCD! / You know how your digital camera has that awesome built in meter that gets the exposure just right every time? / Guess what. They were around before digital cameras. Film cameras have built in meters as well, there’s very little that will go wrong. dSLR cameras are designed after film SLR cameras, you just have a lot less buttons to worry about with your film camera! What film should I use? / You have three options. Slide/transparency film, colour negative and black and white negative. The colour negative is the typical film most people use/used which you take into the shop and get your photos in an hour. They all use the same chemical processing (C-41), these can be processed and printed in virtually any minilab. While you can get consumer films in this, I’d suggest going for something a little more. My personal favourite are the Fuji portrait films. There’s a huge range available and each with its own characteristics. Slide, or transparencies are just that. Often mounted and projected straight from the processed film, this is the product of choice for landscape photographers. Very fine grained, these tend to cost a bit more both to buy and process, but the results are well worth it. Films such as Velvia are highly saturated, making colours just pop out of the image, which is why it’s most often used for landscapes. You can have prints done from slides as well. This is the Ilfochrome/cibachrome process, with often stunning results. Like the film, it’s more expensive, but well worth it. Black and white is probably the easiest option for doing it all yourself. Films, developers, papers and whole darkroom set ups are readily available so you can be a part of the process from start to finish. This is where the magic of photography comes from, seeing an image appear in the dim light of the darkroom. It’s something special. / This is where the most fun is to be had as well. Unlike the other two film types, there’s not one single process to use. There’s a multitude of film developers, each giving a different result with different films. Variable development times also give different results. This continues with a range of different papers, each with different qualities to fine tune your final image. It sounds difficult, but you just need to start with one film, one developer and master that before trying other products and getting a look which suits. You can experiment and develop your own look, or learn what each result gives and apply the best one to the particular image. If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, there’s always photo labs which will do it for you! While the answer to should you try film is ‘yes’, there’s no definitive answer to any other question with film. It’s a matter of using the product which best suits what you want to get out of your image making. If at all possible, DO find a good pro lab. In my experience the staff are often very friendly and helpful, and provide a much better service than a minilab. The APUG forum is a great place to find information about film and processing, and it has regional forums too, so you can find people in your local area. Fuji’s film range and information can be found here Kodak here and Ilford’s website is a great resource not only for black and white photo products, but it also has a forum and other helpful information. So why not give film a go. Who knows, you might fall in love with the magic of film.

Last week one of our Dear Leaders flew up to Sydney to attend the Open Universities Fast Thinking Inaugural Innovation Awards So the lovely and generous Rose Moxon invited a few people over to hers for a bit of lunch and a chat with Martin Well the opportunity to actually meet fellow redbubblers in the flesh was quite irresistable and it turned out to be a really delightful day. / This is how the day went for me…. and no suprises….it’s a photo essay…..all shot with a tiny fisheye lomo using 35 mm film…. which is also why it’s taken me a moment or two to get this journal up….. anyway… Rose and I live some considerable distance apart so I needed to catch a very early train into Central Station where I was to then catch a connecting train to West Pennant Hills. Once I was there the lovely Rosalie Dale picked me up from the station and we drove from there to Rose’s beautiful home. This is what the morning looked like when I left Wollongong… / Rose had gone to pick up Martin from the Airport which is also some considerable distance from her house so while we waited for their return we chatted and partook of tea and cakes…. looks good hey…. that’s Bill and Patricia replete with yummy cakes Well very soon Martin and Rose returned and we all had lunch and a lot of chatting about this that and the other thing…. at some point Martin mentioned he really enjoyed some of the work he’d seen on RB made from little toy cameras….. well quicker than a rat up a drainpipe I had my cute as a button pint sized fisheye lomo out of my bag … this is what it looks like….. Poor Martin... I think he was still trying to figure out what I had in my hand when I snapped this one about one inch from his nose…. this is where a tiny little plastic lens can be a lot of fun…. it’s just not a regular portrait shot but it still tells it’s own story…. and that’s chasing soox in the background And what a wonderful suprise to see Martin arrive wearing a wonderfulblack on black teeshirt by nofrillsart called B-2 Stealth Bomber and it looked excellent. By mid afternoon he need to iron his shirt for the evening ahead and that’s exactly what he did… yes in breaking news I can confim that this is a man who knows how to iron and is not afraid to demonstrate that skill in front of a dozen or so brand new friends all of whom it could reasonably expected to be packing a camera of some sort….all I can say it was brave and mavellous and very entertaining….. Within moments maybe less than that there were more lenses trained on anything that moved that you could shake a stick at…. I actually got in to a bit of a lens off with….. can you tell who it is behind that massive bit of camera ? She’s a very talented musican and artist here…... It’s Tania Rose of course who was there with her dear little boy….. Well while the fototragic’s made best use of the available subject matter the man himself made swift work of the aforementioned shirt… now that is a practiced technique and I am deeply impressed…. I have a thing about ironing as anyone who remembers my Extreme Ironing in Antarctica calendar from earlier this year will no do ubt attest…. and while I have you looking…. check out the fabulous canvas print hanging on the wall… it’s called Moon Dancer and it’s a collaboration between Rose and Geoff Coleman and it looked really really good. Well by now the shirt has been pressed to satisfaction and there is a general frenzy of good natured snapshotting like this one with Bill and Martin and Rosalie and Adriana Glackin And yes Martin really is that tall…..;) This is one of my favorite shots from the day I think… this funny tiny little camera has caught something essential to the natures of both of these lovely people ….I find it the image joyful warm and sweet even. As you can imagine that was thirsty work so more tea and cakes were required to fortify us all for the next part of the day. Here Bill attempts to convince Patricia and Noel Elliot of something …I can’t recall what which is a shame as it looks like it was an interesting conversation….. The afternoon was winding up by now as people need to get into the city for the main event. I got a lift back to the centre of Sydney with Martin and his companions for the evening the extraordinary Rose Moxon and the beautiful and talented Sarah Moore They dropped me on Macquaire street in the CBD and I had thought to go and have a look at my artworks being exhibited at Parliment House but it was closed to the public that day…. oh well….so I went and took some photo’s of the big city buildings that congregate down that end of town instead like this one….. Then I went and caught the train to Central station and waited for the connecting train to take me back to Wollongong. I had left from Wollongong station just a little after seven that morning and got back just a little after seven that evening ….. a big day all right and well worth it…it was such a pleasure to be part of this gathering and I can’t thank Martin and Rose enough for inviting me to be part of it….I had a wonderful time and met some lovely people…... and this is what the sky was like when I got back….

“I wasn’t in bad way…but I was in a bad way mentally.” / Chad Witt / The Truthbary Chad Witt (1971 – 2000) was an American gay artist, fascinated by minimalism, detail and the mundane. He had synesthesia and bi-polar disorder. While suffering a particularly savage bout of depression he took his own life in September 2000. We e-met in 1996, and for the next four years maintained an intense internet friendship – discussing art; collaborating on projects and sending each other tapes talking on a range of topics. Chad would often take images I had sent and ‘treat’ them. In early 2000 I was thrilled to curate a Sydney showing of Chad’s conceptual sculpture Darlo Homo, Chad’s first exhibit in Australia and the last public showing of Chad’s art while alive. The Truthbary documents some of the images and poetry Chad Witt created during our four-year friendship, many of the images are from Chad’s ‘treated’ versions of original photography of mine. Chad’s own voice narrates snippets about himself, and one of his musical compositions provides the soundtrack. The film is in a minimalist style in keeping with Chad’s own tastes. Three of Chad’s images in the film have been further ‘treated’ by me, making The Truthbary our final collaboration. It was screened at the Sydney Squatfest Film Festival in 2008. The Truthbary is intended as a companion piece to minimal chad Redbubble Chad

Good morning beautiful bubblers! / A special meet up has been planned in Melbourne for Sunday 26th April, 2009. / / Where – The Astor Theatre in St. Kilda (Click here for location) / Time – 10:00am till 12:00pm (2hrs) / / Unfortunately we are limited in time and there is also a cost for the hire of the venue so… / Participation numbers will be limited to 30. / That will enable the cost to be only $22 each. / ...and if you are great at mathematics you will find that it does cost $660 to hire the venue for two hours with the theatre lights on. / / There will be a plan put into action on the day as the theatre section of the building would be too crowded with 30 artists / models climbing over each other for space so, we will be dividing time in the Theatre itself into two groups of 15 and one hour of “creative” time for each group. / / IMPORTANT / If you wish to bring one muse / model that is cool but… if you’re thinking of bringing 2 or more they should also be paying the $22 so they can be added to the official numbers… / I’m just trying to avoid having 30 paid up photographers with 90 models running around… The Astor Theatre will get very small very quickly. / So, just try to do the right thing and get multiple models to pay $22, that way we keep numbers at a manageable level and everyone has enough creative space to work in. / / Please Bubblemail me with your interest and I’ll pass on payment information. / The final 30 participants will be listed here / I look forward to seeing you all!! :D ____________ / / Have you ever wanted to be an extra on a film set??? / Well this rare and fun opportunity exists in Melbourne on Monday evening, 23rd March. / Where? Grumpy’s – 125 Smith St in Fitzroy. A start time of 4:30pm this will give the crew some “make-up” time so shooting will start around 6pm. / Also please log onto Facebook and become Emily’s friend! Check it out! :D / To find out even more about this event please view this Forum Post and if you want more info about the company doing the filming click here / / / ____________ / / ...and just in case that wasn’t enough for you, one Melbourne’s most talented photographers Joshua Hakman is putting together an evening meet up just click here for more info! / / / Peace peeps! /

Well over the last couple of days I’ve been hosting a very cute two headed devil of a creature who goes by the double barreled moniker of Cedric and Beau…..such elegant and refined names who will hence forth to be known as the boys….. Rhana did warn me they would be nothing but trouble but they just looked so cute that I found that very hard to believe…..little did I know…. but I soon found out…... I had expected them to arrive before the easter break but the postie must be doing double time delivering all those lovely tax bonus cheques to everyone that the boys were somewhat delayed….. the first time I saw them was when I came home on Wednesday to find a strange but very inviting parcel waiting for me on the doorstep…..I rushed it inside and broke out my emergency bubble camera….. / . / / . / Almost immediately the little dears proclaimed themselves totally tired out from such a long trip and demanded a nap…. and not on the fabulous 70’s retro brown cordrouy sofa or the miner’s lounge out the back…. nope these boys wanted to snuggle up for a little rest on my bed with shaggy ted and little yellow ted…. Ok Ok I thought just this once and after all they are guests so whatever… / . / / . / After a refreshing little nap they emerged all happy and full of beans so I took them outside for a little stroll about the garden to scope out the wildlife. I’m not much of a gardener but I do like to grow things like vegies and suchlike. The boys were very impressed with my pumpkin patch and kind enough to not mention the exuberant tangle of undergrowth and other assorted foliage sprouting up luxuriantly everwhere else / . / / . / Well it didn’t take long before another resident of my over grown back yard to emerge from the herb garden and sashay over to meet the boys…. so here they are mixing it up with Wilbur the Wild…he’s the garden’s live in personal attack wombat and so the lads and he all got on just splendidly…..no suprises there then….. / . / / . / Well after a while Wilbur shuffled along to do his round of the garden beds… the snails around these parts are particularlly antsy this time of year and he has a full time job just keeping the little buggers in line. So the boys came over to help me with some work I was doing. We are having a gorgeous sunny autumn right now and while the sun was out I wanted to get a couple of cyanotypes exposed. So here are Cedric and Beau holding down the glass on the prints I was making…. and a great help they were too…. / . / / . / and here’s a scan of the little doilies I was making. This one is on it’s way back to Tassie now as a little memento of their great help in the making of these little prints.. / . / / . / Well it really was such a delightful sunny day and having gotten the work out of the way it really was time for a little stoll down to the beach. The boys assured me that they just loved the beach and a little sand in the fur would be no big deal so we set out for the local beach which is fortunately only a block away…. these guys have great teeth but very short legs. Before we left for the beach though they really needed to be kitted out with a little camera for some tourist type happy snapping of their own / . / / . / .....and that little camera they are holding is a real camera just look at the shot they took before we left for the golden sands of Austi beach…. / . / / . / By now they had the hang of the littlest camera in my collection and were quietly wondering how they could slip in into their baggage for the rest of the journey. Anyhow we meandered off to the beach and sat down to let them get their bearings… shall we go out on to the deep rocky shelf or just go straight over to the rock pools to have a splash about…. the boys insisted on going right out on to the rock shelf even though the tide was coming in and the waves were really crashing in… they are Tasmanians after all and that means they are pretty darn tough…. not much frightens a Tassie devil ..or at least that’s what they told me…. here they are before we went out to check out the rocks and big waves…. / . / They look pretty happy here before we wandered of to check out the wild bits of the local landscape…..but that sea is mighty deceptive…. / . / / . / Arghh this is nothing they say… what waves… my goodness …..the way you mainlanders carry on….. / . / / . / Well they thought I was just being a total wuss about the savage seas and insisted on going right out on the rocky shelf to really check things out….. which of course was perhaps not a really good idea….coz as soon as they had settled them selves down for a bit of a happy snapping session on a nice warm rock there as a great big swell and…. oh my goodness I can’t believe it but immediately they were like … mauaaaahhhh PICK ME UP…. they really truly didn’t want to get their fur wet so I had to hoist them off the rock shelf and carry them away before the next big wave did exactly that…. / . / / . / So we headed back to the beautiful sandy beach to have a little sit down and catch out breaths. Before long we attracted a very curious crowd of onlookers who had never ever seen a two headed ball of fur and fury before…. / . / / . / Now I didn’t think it would be a tremendously good idea if the Cedric and Beau team of race around the world Redbubble Devils got eaten by rabid gulls before they had even left Austi so I introduced a couple of size eight and a half how would you like this up your feathery backsides to the equation and sure enough the flying rats made a quick escape…. a very sensible move too I can assure you…..and the boys were very much in agreement with this strategy…. quite made their day in fact…. / . / / . / Feeling very peased with the outcome of the gull v devil senario we strolled a bit further up the beach and checked out the rest of the beach… they loved the signage for example and wanted to see if they could make of with this as well…. / . / / . / I had to explain that it really would not be an even vaugely good idea to make off with the swim between the flags signs and infact they really truly did not want to get tangled up with the local lifeguards. Our beaches are very pretty down under but they can also be hugely dangerous and the consequences of not swimming between the flags or annoying the lifesavers or disregarding their instructions really didn’t bear thinking about….. / . / / . / Well it had been pretty hot work hauling these curious visitors along the beach and I wanted to check out the ocean pools and try and intice these guys to come for a swim with me so we wandered along a bit futher were I like to splash about in the relative safety of these three gorgeous rook pools… / . / / . / They were quite impressed by the local sea baths but not that impressed… they accompanied me up the walkway between the two big pools and I nearly convinced them to jump in with me… but not quite….. / . / / . / But the last of the warm weather is on us and I won’t be swimming for much longer this season so I jumped in for a very quick swim while the boys minded my hat and thongs…. / . / / . / Ahhh that was just so nice! and even the cranky little furballs were so chilled out by the salty sea air that after my little dip we all went and sat on a nice warm rock for a bit to just take it all in….. / . / / . / These guys have had the most wonderful day at the beach … I mean it’s always a success when you don’t get drowned by monster waves or eaten by rabid seagulls so they really were pretty happy and very very relaxed as I think you can tell from this shot….. / . / / . / So we all meandered off back to mine and all there was left to do on this practically perfect day was sit in the shade with a cleansing ale and a nourishing lung biscuit and chat about old times and the next destination on their hectic globe trotting journey around the world…. / . / / . / Ahhh what a wonderful visit it’s been and such fun to have these little guys spend the day with me… so good infact I whipped up a tee shirt to commemorate the occasions….. / . / The End

I had to share my good news. I won another lensbaby on Shutterbugs last month, and asked for a Nikon mount so that I could show my Nikon owning students how to play with the lens. My Canon owning students have always been able to have a go with mine, up till now. The lovely lady at lensbaby.com wanted to know why I wanted another lens, after having bought 4 already. When I explained that I wanted to allow more of my students a chance to use one, she asked for more details…..and the upshot of that little conversation is….. They sent me a new lensbaby composer!!!!!!!! And threw in the optic kit!!!! So now I can demonstrate the new lensbaby as well as the older ones….and as an added bonus, they’re going to advertise my classes and workshops on their website…. Don’t tell me all obsessions are a waste of time…..heh

/ BRAG TIME! / if you’re in Melbourne, you can go to Federation Square and watch a film called CORAL SEA DREAMING 2, an epic undersea film of magnificent cinematography by Australia’s own Emmy Award-winner David Hannan and music by yours truly, Tania Rose. This film is an extraordinary visual feast, and is probably the last we will see of much of the marine life of the coral reefs, as the reefs around the globe are as we speak becoming extinct :(. David is the world leader of undersea cinematography and provides a lot of footage for marine scientists and their studies. Shot in Hi-Definition, Coral Sea Dreaming 2 is a collection of his best work. It is indeed both an honour and a privilege to be involved in this project, on many levels, not least of which is the fact that this is both a celebration and a tribute to something the Earth is losing with dire consequences. The earth is precious…more precious than ourselves

Last week I had the thrill of being offered my first solo exhibition. A solo exhibition was a long way from any of my plans, I could neither afford it, nor did I have the confidence to launch a whole selection of my work on the public in such a way of my own volition. However, the gallery where I volunteer (ArtGeo in Busselton) is for the second year in a row, the location for the renowned international event – Cinefest Oz French-Australian Film Festival and all the celebrations that go along with this huge event. Along with an Australian premiere of the movie Stone Bro’s and screenings of many new movies, there will be seminars, lunches, directors talks and events for VIP guests, all held around Busselton and at the gallery. The event coordinators requested a local artist to exhibit works to compliment the festival and the gallery invited me to accept this part. (with no charge for gallery fees) I was thrilled!! I have just learned in the last few days, that I will be now sharing my exhibition space with well known Noongar artist Troy Bennell – something which is an honour for me and I look forward to viewing his art in person instead of on websites! I have always been drawn to and honouring of local noongar culture and at times revealed this through my own artworks – Hopefully our offerings during this exhibition will compliment each others art and intent, and the film festival’s main event – the indigenous comedy “Stone Bro’s”. The exhibition will be part of the after party for visiting national and international film directors and stars….something which is truly exciting as this kind of exposure is beyond my wildest dreams. The exhibition will only be open for one week from 9th September, and will be open to the public also during that time (for details contact ArtGeo Gallery ). As you can imagine, with only two weeks notice to get a selection of my work printed and framed ready to hang in a gallery situation, I have been working hard to put together a quality submission. Having worked as a gallery assistant at ArtGeo gallery, I know of the hard work involved behind the scenes as well, but I know they will present a very professional exhibition and “package” to the visiting festival guests. All in all, an exciting week to look forward to! And so, I wanted to share this news with my close friends here at the Bubble as without your support, and encouragement, I would probably not have the courage to take this step and accept this challenge! So cheers to you!

09-09-09 saw the opening of my first official art exhibition… / I say official lightly as it was not a publicized traditional solo exhibit, but one held in conjunction with the Cinefest Oz French Australian film festival, which is held annually in Busselton. Some amazing films were on view for the public at the local Cinema, as well as many short animated clips showing daily at the ArtGeo gallery and cultural centre (where my art was on display) / The exhibition ran for one week to coincide with the French Australian Film Festival, a busy and exciting time for the arts in this region. / I was honoured to share my exhibition space with an incredible artist by the name of Troy Bennell. Troy is an award winning artist, highly acclaimed in the indigenous arts scene not just in australia, but internationally, and a most wonderful young man as well, his work is strong and beautiful, and I must say I look forward to working on future projects with him. / I got a surprise to realize I actually had images of Troy already here on RB, taken at the beach festival in January when he was performing on the didgeridoo Here are a few glimpses within the walls of the gallery – an old building that was originally a bank, then the Agricultural Department building before being restored and upgraded into a professional art gallery. I have to say it was overwhelming to see my work on those big white walls!! / Bill Webb of the Wardan Cultural Centre delivered a wonderful “Welcome to Country” speech for the movie premiere of Stone Bros and guests, and here he strikes a pose in front of the artwork featuring his portrait, that won an award for me at last year’s Signature Southwest Art Prize. / Hmmm….someone taking time out to play while the others are busy inside working…... As part of Cinefest Oz, Saturday night featured the West Australian premiere of the new movie Stone Bros , followed by an after party for VIP guests, stars, producers etc, at the gallery where my art was on display. It was an amazing night and loads of fun too! / Stars of the movie Stone Bros, Luke Carroll, Sarah Lawrence and Leon Burchill party with local lady Josephine Ziino… It was great to meet these people after seeing their movie, they were all so down to earth, fun and friendly. These photos were only taken with a little handbag point and shoot, so aren’t the best but will give you a bit of an idea of the fun / Luke Carroll (Eddie), Sarah Lawrence, Leon Burchill (Charlie) and producer Ross Hutchens / A bit of fun with one of the stars from Stone Bros – Gary Cooper. / Gary Cooper, Leon Burchill, Merlin, and two lovely assistants outside the ArtGeo Gallery. / The most unlikely star of the movie, and one who stole the show, was little Merlin….shown here with owner/co-star Gary Cooper. / After playing a monster of a role in the movie Stone Bros, Merlin looks pretty humble and quite approachable…..lol If you get the chance, you must go see this movie Stone Bros…..it was filmed between Perth and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, and is described as being an “indigenous comedy”, but that is an understatement….. it is the most hilarious movie I have ever seen, a cross between Cheech and Chong and Priscilla Queen of the Desert, with a whole lot more thrown in (including one scene that was a real take off of the Paris Hilton look ab-original style…lol…..) Very original, fresh, funny, and with a lot of smoke, a damn lot of smoke, and stones of all descriptions, I defy anyone with a pulse not to laugh out loud at this movie! check it out Stone Bros. In the last week I’ve come across trailers for two design films which are definitely worth keeping an eye out for. Died Young, Stayed Pretty, a film about rock poster design and Coast Modern, a film about Modernist Architecture … Died Young, Stayed Pretty Died Young, Stayed Pretty is a candid look at the underground poster culture in North America. This unique documentary examines the creative spirit that drives these indie graphic artists. The film gives us intimate look at some of the giants of this modern subculture. Outside of their own circle, they’re virtually unknown. But within their ranks they make up an army of bareknuckle brawlers, publicly arguing the aesthetic merits of octopus imagery and hairy 70s porn stars. They’ve created their own visual language for describing the spotty underbelly of western civilization and they’re not shy about throwing it in the face of polite society. Along the way, they manage to create posters that are strikingly obscene, unflinchingly blasphemous and often quite beautiful. Coast Modern Filmmakers Michael Bernard and Gavin Froome take you on a journey through three generations of modernist movements on the West Coast of North America. From Rudolf Schindler and Richard Neutra’s 1920s Hollywood, through to the second wave of post WWII America to today’s current modernist renaissance. This film speaks with the architects and their patrons and asks if Modernism’s time has finally come or did it ever really go away. Coast Modern appears to still be in post production and Died Young, Stayed Pretty currently has screenings across the US and one in London on the 9th of October. If you’re into these kind of indie films about creativity, art, design and the like, The Devil and Daniel Johnston is another that’s worth checking out. The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a stunning portrait of a musical and artistic genius who nearly slipped away. Director Jeff Feuerzeig exquisitely depicts a perfect example of brilliance and madness going hand in hand with subject Daniel Johnston. As an artist suffering from manic depression with delusions of grandeur, Daniel Johnston’s wild fluctuations, numerous downward spirals, and periodic respites are exposed in this deeply moving documentary. Just reading that makes me want to watch it again. The trailer is available here ...

Where are the strong female characters in American cinema? The film Amelia (biographical film about Amelia Earhart) opened this weekend to less than enthusiastic reviews. Despite a strong cast, the film is described as “wooden.” American movie-goers seem to often reject strong intelligent female characters in favor of the scantily clad bad girl, the dependent subordinate mate, or the victim. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider opened number one at the box office in 2001 earning an astounding $48.2 million. Despite the lack of an intelligent plot or any memorable dialog, the film has earned more than $300 million to date. There isn’t much happening in this film other than Lara Croft in a series of sexy poses, scantily clad in latex, with a gun. The movie An Officer and a Gentleman grossed $130 million in 1982. In my opinion, only a 14 year old with dreamy fantasies of living out the Cinderella/Prince Charming fairy tale could enjoy this film. Throughout the film two female friends conspire and connive to each “catch” a navy pilot husband. In the final scene the hero arrives in his naval dress white uniform to rescue his lover from the dingy factory where she works. He sweeps her up into his arms and carries her away, Prince Charming style, to the cheers and tears of all the other women workers. The scene is an insult to strong, independent, and intelligent women everywhere. These films beg the question, “Does American film art imitate life for women in America?” Yes, to a degree, I think it does. There is a segment of the population that truly believes a woman’s place is behind (not beside) her man or in the kitchen. Remember when National Republican Congressional Committee Communications Director Ken Spain said that Nancy Pelosi, who is third in the line of succession to President of the United States of America, should be put in her place? Representative Pelosi responded that she is “in her place” as Speaker of the House. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) was more direct in her response to Mr. Spain’s sexist remark: “It’s evidence [Republicans] long for the days when a woman’s place was in the kitchen. Now a woman is third in line for the presidency… But it’s not surprising, coming from a party that’s 80 percent male and 100 percent white.” NRCC: Pelosi Should Be Put In Her Place by McChrystal Huffington Post Article by Rachel Weiner Why doesn’t Hollywood produce more films with strong, intelligent female characters? “Because Hollywood will do whatever it takes to make money. They are not taking a principled stance against women. They just don’t see the audience as going there.” said writer, director Rod Lurie. Women & Film Washington Post Article by Ann Hornaday The busty, half naked, latex wearing bad girl makes money. The wimpy, stand by her man, character makes money. A smart, independent, adventurous, intelligent woman who can fly an airplane comes up “wooden.” Cross posted at Active Art

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto and convinced him to do an interview. 38 years later, Levitan, director Josh Raskin and illustrator James Braithwaite have collaborated to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack. A spellbinding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit and timeless message, I Met the Walrus was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Animated Short. I implore you to please take the time to watch this brilliant short film. 5 minutes out of your life that I believe is well worth it

Through a fortuitous series of emails, the expenditure of rather a lot of money on half-decent frames, and, well… standing out in the cold for hours and hours in Leicester Square over the past 18 months…I now have 13 of my photos hanging in a sort of vestibule area leading to an in-house cafe at my old office. Woo! / Woo! I even got to make my own flyer. It’s kind of a pity that I can’t have people handing out canapes and champagne for an opening. OMG – I just realised I could have a premiere opening for an exhibit about premieres… at which I could then take premiere photos!! (Why, yes.I’m fine) / Decent picture frames? Somewhat expensive. And then you multiply by thirteen. (Or ‘12a’ if you’re superstitious). / On your immediate right as you enter the area, there are six shots, five shown here. There’s even a short philosophical musing underneath the portrait of Reese Witherspoon, but I doubt you can make it out in this image… (there is a ‘pondering chair’ though) / On your left as you enter the vestibule area you’ll see one set of shots. Hopefully you brought your own champagne and canapes because not even my opening had either of those things. Indeed, I went and got my own coffee after hanging the photos, and drank it in a nearby cafe… The photos: / (can I just mention – if you’re looking at them on a slightly larger than usual screen, they’re not this blurry in real life- these are facebook album links, and simply clicking on one with a link will take you to the appropriate redbubble page to verify some kind of quality is present!) / / Reese Witherspoon at the ‘Monsters vs Aliens’ Premiere. This was both 100% candid (and taken at about the same time that I fell in love with Reese Witherspoon, interestingly). After that premiere, I went to watch a Symphonic Metal band from Finland play at a concert. / John Simm at the ‘Dark Knight’ premiere. This was a massive event, my position was crap, and it was only when I walked away that I turned around and did one high and blind shot of the crowd. THAT’S what premieres can be like! / Megan Fox, at the ‘Transformers Revenge of the Fallen’ Premiere. Taken at a massive distance and weird angle shooting through parts of a crowd. Converted to black’n’white in my mind immediately due to the highly blinding neon yellow jackets of the police standing behind her / Nicole Kidman, at the ‘Australia’ Premiere. It was a freezing night and Kidman showed up wearing THAT dress. She put a coat on a bit later to do interviews, at which point she probably couldn’t feel anything. / George Clooney, at ‘The Fantastic Mr Fox’ Premiere. I even got his signature : the stylised ‘GC’ is indistinguishable from what ‘CC’, ‘GG’ or ‘CG’ would also look like. But hey, he’s still cool! / Zac Efron (insert scream here) at The premiere of ‘17 Again’. High and semi-blind with a 10-20mm lens and one of the luckiest random flash bursts from somebody else’s camera you’d ever get. (Refer Nicole Kidman photo and refer David Duchovny photo, though) / Charlize Theron, at the ‘Hancock’ premiere. It was the first premiere I’d gone to and I snapped Will Smith AND Charlize Theron. You can pretty much trace the next 50+ premieres I’ve attended to this photo. / Will Smith, at the ‘Seven Pounds’ premiere. Will Smith is pretty much EXACTLY this cool. / Add a caption / Johnny Depp, at the ‘Public Enemies’ Premiere. The bouncer / security guard / goon in front of him benefitted from two things : (1) guns are hard to come by, because I probably would have shot him for blocking views of Mr Depp and (2) his presence was necessary in order for this shot to take place, so… you know… kudos, scary tall security dude! / Quentin Tarantino, at the ‘Inglourious Basterds’ Premiere. Not much to say – I’d missed out on getting either a photo or autograph by virtue of a poorly scheduled firedrill at work… and here I missed out on an autograph but got the shot. Shot always comes first. / Al Pacino, at the ‘Righteous Kill’ Premiere. Robert De Niro apparently really dislikes being out in public at these sort of events, but you just know Al loves it. / April Pearson, the only actress in this selection whom I’d never even heard of prior to this premiere, for a movie I hadn’t even heard of prior to this Premiere for ‘Tormented’. Still… have to love the unselfconsciousness of the pose / David Duchovny and an obscured-by-flash Gillian Anderson at the ‘X-Files : I want to believe’ premiere. Probably the photo that made me positively inclined towards continuing to speculatively shoot into paparazzi flash bursts in the hope of a second bit of magic. It hasn’t really worked a second time. Yet. Bonus shots from Behind the Scenes! / / Me’n’Will. (it’s not in exhibit, because… well…) / Me’n’Reese. (It’s not in exhibit, because… uh…) / Me’n’QT. (Not in exhibit, because… I couldn’t quite match the pose anyway) / Me’n’Jack Sparrow. (Not in exhibit, because… of quality issues, for a start) / Me’n’Al. (Not in exhibit because… sadly there wasn’t enough space. Otherwise it totally would have been!) / Me’n’Megan (Not in exhibit because … that expression on my face is freakin’ weird) / Me’n’Charlize (not in exhibit because…. my hand under the picture frame is annoying) Oh, and per my psych evaluation at an overnight training thingy, ‘Introversion’ is apparently my strongest trait. HAHAHAHAA!! (the food was good, though) If you can’t make it to the exhibit (and let’s face it, you kind of need to be signed in to the office by security, or somehow press your face against the window when the blinds are open…) (as well as be in London) hopefully this has been a semi-worthy alternative! Incredibly, however, a lot of these photos are for sale on Redbubble (as the links on the photos above will attest) and by sheer coincidence my calendar of Movie Premieres is ALSO for sale right here on Redbubble! How many of these Premieres have I been to now? I hear you ask? / FIFTY FOUR is my answer Until Next Time!
