acrylic, mixed media on canvas / sold
Using a variety of diluted acrylic paints and a single template this image was created upon a gessoed board. It is one in a series of similar images that were created with the same template, and with the same positive/negative reversal process. It depicts the human form stretching towards the heavens and with the head tilted back. The form is overlaid with textures and colors creating a visually original and inherently unique work of art. The work could be related to the individuality of all humans, yet it also expresses the commonalities of our intelligent and emotional nature.
This is a mixed media work produced on a heavyweight paper. I used acrylic paints, some marker, some colored pencil, and black india ink. The initial sketch was reworked a few times to establish the broken shapes within the form and background. The coloration came together in different layers of using the varying mediums. The original dimensions are 8in X 10in. It was completed in 2005.
This self-portrait painting was produced using acrylics, ceramic glazes, and tempura paints on a heavyweight paper. It was loosely drawn in with pencil, and then expressively painted within one sitting period. It has different qualities within the smooth and reflective surfaces. The broken shapes draw the eyes into my face, and there are arrow elements corresponding with some of the divided geometric forms that act as visual movement components. The original dimensions of the painting are 26in. X 20in. It was produced in 1999.

This life drawing work was created with various mediums on a piece of compressed cardboard. It was started with pencil, and then selectively outlined with ink and a sable brush. I used a white soft charcoal to create the highlighted areas of the figure. Then I used a limited palette of pastels and colored pencils to add the expressive coloration. The white soft charcoal and layers of pastel and pencil blended nicely, creating subtle variations of color and tone. I enjoy the stylized and sketch-like quality that this piece retains, and may rework it at a later time with more pastel and washes of acrylic paints. I think it has a nice expression as it is now. The dimensions of the piece are 18in. X 24in. It was produced in 2008.

This is now the finalized work that has been modified with washes of acrylic paints and sprayed over with a gloss medium. The dimensions of the piece are 18in. X 24in. It was produced in 2008.
This figure study work was produced with a variety of mediums in different stages on a heavyweight paper. I began the drawing with an ebony pencil, charcoal, and a graphite stick. After blocking in the form and some depth of shadows, I used colored pastels in a loose and expressive way, filling in areas of the figure. I then layered colored pencil, to enhance the variations of flesh tones, add texture, and help to define subtle shapes. After this I used acrylic paints, to fill background areas, and painted some selective lines and shadows of the human form. I wanted to photo the work at this stage, to retain the suggestive sketch and fluid quality of the figure, before making some refinements to the model and filling the background. This work was created from life, in about an hour. The dimensions of the paper are 24in. X 18in. It was produced in 2008.
This is a mixed media work which was started as a figure drawing produced with pencil and india ink on newsprint. I added a selective under painting with acrylics, then used colored pencil and pastel to expressively shade the form. The background was also filled with pastel. The work was over sprayed with touches of a sepia toned spray paint. This sealed the overall work, in addition to creating greater tonal variations to the existing colors, and complimenting the female figure. The dimensions of the work are 17in. X 11in. It was produced in 2008.
acrylic, mixed media on canvas, 24×20 inch (61×51 cm)
Painted using watercolours and ink on gessoed 110gsm cartridge paper. The ground was from a previous exploratory work.
Color pencil, graphite, watercolor, acrylic and collage on rives paper. Can’t remember the exact measurements, but the central figure is just about life size.
From an original 2009 mixed media painting by Stephen Mitchell.
(4×6 Mixed Media on Card) / / The Hourglass Figure”, often emphasized by wearing a tightly bound Corset, was well-regarded a hundred years ago. Hopefully, there are still guys out there(right?) who appreciate women who aren’t a size 2. Anyway, I made this little collage with a game card which already had an hourglass on it. So,I just added the pic,the saying(printed with a Dymo Label-Maker(Love it!) and a little sepia-colored ink.
