Redesdale, Victoria, Australia What is Bipolar? Bipolar disorder is a medical illness that causes severe mood swings which are caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. People who suffer from this illness lack the control mechanism that enables them to pull away from emotional situations and as such their lives may spiral out of control, through no fault of their own. The illness is very serious and very real and affects not only the sufferer, but their friends and family as well. There is still a lot of stigma attached to this disease, given that it is a mental illness to which very little is known about. It is incurable but can be controlled by diet and medication. Most bipolar types are brilliant, creative, inspiring, loving, generous and caring individuals who contribute to making the world a better place, but all the while they themselves struggle every day to survive. This shot is taken in the north of Rwanda near the DR Congo border. It showcases the absurd beauty of this broken land. Known as the land of one thousand hills Rwanda is bursting at the seams. This shots is part of the ‘world’s most expensive card’ promotion initiated by John Robb. It has raised close to $700 AUD so far.

“Wind break” is about reducing the landscape down to its barest essentials, so that the focus is on the hills, the trees and their shadows. / The trees are overlapped to give the impression that there are more trees than there actually are. The reason I made them seem to float above the ground is because these types of trees are not indigenous to the surrounding landscape. They don’t really belong. / The hills themselves are smooth and bereft of incidental details, reminiscent of the drought affected grasslands commonly found in pastoral farmlands. I took this shot on a walk in the southern end of the Peak District. This was from the start of the walk, we had been shrouded in mist throught the drive up there but as we pulled into the little village at the start of the walk the mist cleared revealing the blue skys above. As we descended down between the trees the mist retuned and remained a thick blanket around us for the rest of the 6 mile walk which took in Thors Cave. This version of the shot I converted to black and white using the Silver Effects plug in from Nik Software for Photoshop and I liked this a little more than the version I created in Nikon Capture NX.

This image was shot at dawn. I waited on the lake in the dark in my kayak until the sun started to peer over the horizon and the mist I had been kayaking through became evident. The silence was golden. This is the picture I have in my head of that moment, a place I want to return to over and over again.
