Come to me, / Rest your weary head / Upon my swollen breast / And I shall sing thy demons to sleep. Dandelion bows to your grace, / Lavender soothes with her perfume, / Willow waves good night / As The Sun bids adieu. My heart song plays / A lullaby for your darkened soul. / Time for rest now my dear, / Trust in me and find love. Luna answers my call / And beams down upon us / A gentle, loving glow, / Framing your beauty and peace. A rustling of leaves / Produces small shadows. / Curious woodland onlookers / Here to gaze upon the winged stranger. Tears of blood / Slide down your grimaced face / As nightmares tempt you into Hell. / Ignore them my dear, they cannot harm you. With delicate hands, / I wipe your tears away / Bringing a childlike smile to your face. / Without a word, the nightmares fade away. Black Horse stands in the distance / Patiently waiting on you / Someday you know she shall take you away / But that is not today. Little Fawn settles near us / Nuzzling under your chin / As your arm gently pulls her close / Large black eyes close in slumber with no fear. Morpheus takes your hand / And guides you to the sea. / He releases his grip as you wade in deep / The salt burning as it cleans your wounds. You extend your limbs outward / And swim strong / Turtle and Otter joining you in play. / At last, you are Free. To laugh and sing / Dance and play, / No more blood, / No more pain…..just the sea. Stars shoot across Nyx’s breast / As a wide smile envelops your face. / I run my fingers through your hair / And Fox sniffs your scarred, rusted blade. Porpoise joins in your fun / Guiding you to the surface. / Swimming harder than ever / You jump with your friend up to the sky. Your wings spread outward / As you take flight / Your wounds healed and tears gone / Nothing holds you down. The sun’s warm embrace / Dries your feathers / As you wrap your arms tightly around your chest. / Eyes closed, enjoying the newfound bliss. Nothing could ever hurt you again / So long as you stayed here / In this moment / With Sun showing her love for you. Thunder rumbles in the distance / And the Rain covers the land / As drops hit your eyelids you realize… / Tis merely a dream. With this thought, / You plummet to the Earth. / Wings unable to catch the wind, / Arms reaching upwards. You crash onto my lap, / Eyes flying open with the screams of the storm. / You scramble to your knees reaching for your blade / Wild eyes searching for escape. I touch your shoulder and you spin in fevered attack / Eyes burning into mine. / A tear streams down your face in horror. / What have you done? My white robes stick to my silken skin / As they turn to crimson, / Your rusted blade protruding from my heaving bosom. / The night screams once more. You fall to the ground sobbing and screaming. / Tearing fistfuls of grass as you wail and plead. / You will never find salvation, / Never again will the sun dry your wings…or your tears. Your heart shatters to a million tiny pieces / As you lay down in defeat. / The screams of the night have calmed to a dull roar. / The universe knows your sin. My animals come forth to mourn the accident. / Fox and Fawn cry, / Rabbit sobs, Squirrel hides his head in his hands… / Such a bitter sadness making the world grow silent. The Rain slows to a stop, / But your anguish soaks into the ground beneath you. / Until a faint sound freezes you / And you turn to face me once more. A tender smile is set upon my face / As my arms reach out to you. / Without a thought, you come to me / Once more burring your face into my chest. Apologies pour out of you / As my blood mixes with your tears. / I hold you close and tell you not to fear. / Black Horse is still waiting… Between burning gasps for breath / You notice something… / My heart is still singing / Loud and strong. Unbelieving, you listen more closely / The song is the same, / Not a somber note to be found. / As the song plays, the night fades away. Sunlight spreads over the horizon / Calling all the world to arise and greet Her. / As her warm light covers our bodies / My blood vanishes, my robes white once more. Overwhelmed with joy / You squeeze me tighter / Laughing uncontrollably / As the world comes to life around us. I pull your chin upwards / For you to look into my eyes. / Without a word, you understand. / You are forgiven. Your blade rests where it fell / When you first came to me. / No blood, no sign of offence. / No longer rusted however…shiny and new. You frown upon it’s gleam, / With a grim understanding. / The blade is new, so you may fight again…. / Your battle is not over. A pleasant giggle escapes me / As I realize what you think you know. / With a wave of my hand / Your blade glitters in the sun…then fades away. No longer will you be forced to spill blood / In anyone, or anything’s name. / Your sentence is complete, / Your battle is truly over. I point to the North / And send you on your way. / The Sun and the Sea are awaiting your presence. / Go now, and be free. With a blink, Fawn says her good bye / As you pat her head and turn to me. / I stand to meet your eye, / As this is our final good bye. Your weathered hands caress my face / As a tear runs down my cheek. / A gentle kiss, and a warm embrace… / And you are off on your journey. The road is long, / And the nights are cool / But nothing can ever hurt you again. / You are alive, and you are Free.

About a week ago Lloyd Harvey commented on my photograph Beyond the Trees, saying that it reminded him of one of the early scenes of H. G. Wells’ book The War of the Worlds. He then went on to express a desire to take the image and turn it into what he was seeing. Never having done any sort of collaboration before, and being a big fan of the book (I read it many times as a child and own quite a few copies), I was intrigued by the idea. So, a couple of BubbleMails later we had a plan. Lloyd delivered the result to me today: I think he’s done a great job (and I do like the idea of a tripod getting ready to take on Billingborough) and the bulk of the credit goes to Lloyd: I just took a photograph, he did a lot of work creating the tripod and then processing the final result. Have a look at his page for the image for details on how he created the work. And be sure to have a look at his website too.

“Clarke died in his adopted home country of Sri Lanka, the Associated Press reported, citing an aide. He had suffered from post-polio syndrome for the last two decades of his life and was confined to a wheelchair. Clarke had lived in Colombo, the Sri Lankan capital, since 1956 and held citizenship there.” Full Story This is a sad day for science fiction fans everywhere. Arthur C. Clarke was the last member of the old guard of Science fiction writers including Asimov and Heinlein. His work was visionary and prophetic, inspiring research and development into many forms technology we enjoy today, two of the most important being satellite communication and geostationary orbit (known as Clarke orbit).

When the subject of sci fi art comes into a conversation, one can’t help but mention this amazing artist who has made a name for himself for his craft, imagination and his persona. We’re talking about none other than the very talented Tom Godfrey. Read on for some insights into the creative mind of a legend. Tom, welcome to the Bubble Couch! Tell us a bit about yourself. Who is the man behind these masterpieces? Firstly, thanks for the accolade. Masterpieces, I wish :) They were a lot of fun to create and probably reveal quite a lot about the inner me, but I feel I still have so much to learn and while I like aspects of most of theses digital paintings, there remain areas that aren’t quite there. It really is a journey I guess. / For me, it started a good few decades ago in Zimbabwe, where, as a young teacher, I volunteered to design programme covers for various sporting and cultural events. I discovered I had a fairly off-beat humour and indulged this in my early attempts at cartooning. This, along with running the art department and creating giant backdrops for my wife’s school plays, satisfied my artistic hunger. Years later I taught myself how to paint in watercolour and after joining a local society, I was lucky enough to sell a few land and seascapes. After moving inland to Johannesburg, South Africa, I experimented with acrylic wildlife paintings as these were popular at the time and I wanted to try to get onto the artistic map, even though I was a part –time hobby artist. I did sell some work which spurred me on. Your work is gorgeous and looks like a lot of pre-production planning goes into it. How do you go about starting off a piece? Again you are too kind, but my ego thanks you :) Sometimes the motivation is from an online competition theme and at other times I just start a pencil doodle, with absolutely no idea of where I am going. The moment a few intersecting lines start to look like something, I develop that idea. I used see the lines in 2D and I now realise I see the 2D shapes in a 3D perspective., which helps. 90% of my Sci Fi illustrations start as pencil sketches, which I scan and complete using Corel Painter. They can sometimes change a lot during this phase, while at other times I will leave a lot of the underlying pencil work for texture effects. So I guess most of my work is created intuitively. I am also quite lazy and don’t often bother to find ref material, a habit I must change. As an example, I am doing a motor-bike drawing at the moment, called “Out of Control” and the bike, is my idea of a bike, so the serious bikeys will probably fall over laughing :) Have you ever considered publishing a children’s book? Thanks to feedback from bubblers, yes I have. In fact bubbler K M Falcon has asked if I would like to collaborate with her on a book she has written for the early childhood age group. Negotiations are in the very early stages, but if it all pans out then I will let you all know. I am also considering writing and illustrating my own and have joined SCBWI (Society for Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators) with this in mind. I have not got any further than this at present, but it will be a serious member of my, “TODO” list for 2009. Do you do this for a living or as a hobby? I wish :) I am not yet making a living from my art, but I am working on it. Have you had any professional training in regards to your art? I majored in Art at the Teachers’ College I went to, but other than that I am self taught, barring a few kind mentors along the road. I taught art to primary school children for +_ 15 years and this was a great incubator for my imagination. How do you promote your work, both online and offline? Badly, I’m still not making a living from my art. :) RedBubble is without doubt my best promotional tool, although all the sales of my originals have been the result of people seeing them live and not online. My Sci Fi, Fantasy and Cartoon works have all benefitted from the online exposure and my rb sales have all, with a few exceptions, been from these images. What has been your most successful work on RedBubble? In terms of earnings, Cigarettes Can Kill-T and my 2009 Sci-Fi Calendar both share top spot. In terms of numbers sold Sea Creature and Siamese Fighting Fish are at the winners. What are some of the elements that inspire you? I am inspired by the concept of future and technology. Today’s Sci Fi – tomorrows reality. It’s almost like Sci Fi artists get a preview of a possible world, sometime, somehow. I also do not like to take anything too seriously -hence my cartoons. Who are some of your favourite artists on RedBubble? Or your favourite pieces of art? Too many to list and I would hate to leave out someone and risk offending them. A number of my favourite artists are so, not only because of their art, but also because of their natures as warm, humorous, communicators. What would you say to individuals starting off in this genre of art? Don’t give up your day job, but don’t have a day job that will leave you too tired for art. Develop your art consistently, with a light hearted, experimental nature until you start to discover who you are, artistically, and what story you would like to share with the world. Join the worlds best online artists and enter competitions –not to win, but to learn and share. If you win, that is a bonus. Finally three words of advice…Draw Draw Draw :) Thanks so much for the opportunity to share my thoughts on this amazing site, populated as it is, with so many diverse and creative minds, including all the people in the engine room driving RedBubble. Cheers all – happy bubbling… Thank you Tom for sharing so much about yourself with us. We hope that you have all the success with your future projects and we look forward to have you on here. Please do not forget us when you’re a royalty! - Faizan

The size, dimension of the known and/or unknown Universe I just cannot comprehend. / I know I’m not alone in that. People have been asking questions on this subject for a long time. And probably will be asking for a long time yet. And as for a definition . . . well can it be defined? What is it exactly? A collection of things (planets, galaxies, suns, nebulae, comets and living things etc) in a vacuum. There lies another question. Other lifeforms?. Sentient lifeforms? We have SETI. Fabled little green men from Mars. Our imagination is rife. Although, even in our imaginations we still anthropomorphise largely when it comes to alien lifeforms. They don’t have to be carbon-based necessarily. There could be silicon-based life for example. Who knows? / But I digress. Back to “Big Picture”. The Universe. Why? How? What caused its being exactly? I know there was the “Big Bang” many millions of years ago. The cause of that well . . . I confess I don’t know. Was there a purpose there? An outcome? Questions aplenty. And what about black holes? The speculation and theory as to time travel and parallel universes? I digress again. / Big questions. Not enough answers yet. / We do know that it is governed by physics. On a scale so huge it is mind-boggling. And the fact that it is still expanding. And expanding in what?? Another question. Does that mean that the Universe is contained/inside something else. If so, the dimension of that unknown thing/container/object must be even bigger than the Universe itself. Again we are talking about mind-boggling dimensions and the distances involved. / Will we ever learn the answers to those questions? / Assuming there are answers to be had. / I know there are many indefinable concepts, perceptions, things that we encounter in our day-to-day lives but the dimension, size, function, purpose of the Universe is just one huge unknown. / / The mind boggles . . .

I wanted to thank all the wonderful people here at RedBubble! When I first came here a few months ago I was a little lost when it came to my art. Being I have never had artistic training I was missing many elements to complete my art. Due the fantastic inspiration of all the fantastic artists here I am finally beginning to understand many of my missing elements..i.e. perspective, color ordination, scene placement..etc. I want to thank each and everyone of you who has supported my art and given me fantastic guidance, I would not be able to advance without all of your help!!!! Thank you all again!! I hope you all are having an incredible week!! Steve Davis

I had never been to Sci-Fi Convention, & with one being on in Sydney last week-end, we decided now would / be as good a time as any to see what goes on. / Turns out we had a great day….. certainly one of the most entertaining cultural experiences I’ve had in a long time. / Now Jack wants to be a Storm-trooper when he grows up, & Reilly’s just pleased those funny little robots (R2-D2) have stopped following him around! Of course I took my camera…... / You’ll notice I’ve got lots of photos shot from behind….. oddly I don’t like most of my front-on ones….. too “posey”! / Apparently even Storm-Troopers have to wait in line to pay an entry fee….. / Someone forgot to tell Gene Simmons that this was Sci-Fi convention, not the Ancient Rockers gig….. / Who you gonna call? Oh come on!!! It had to be said!! / Don’t get sick in Silent Hill….. the nurses are a little creepy….. / Apparently Little Red Riding Hood wasn’t carrying lunch in her basket…. she & the not-so-big bad wolf stopped by McDonalds instead… / A Death Star Commander & his Jedi sons…... strikes me as some serious conflict of interest issues in this family….. / How sweet…. even Storm-troopers need companionship….... They’re heading home after a long day…..

This is a letter that I recently submitted to Publish America. Let’s see how long it takes to get a response from them, and what their response will be. It’s interesting to note that nowhere in my contract did it say anything about promotion and marketing will be directly related to how many copies of my book that I could afford to buy at the time of marketing and promotion. All this marketing and promotion that you have done to Dream Works, to Stephen King, to Starbucks, to Wal-mart, to the Today Show, is in direct realtion to how many copies of my work that I could afford to buy. On that note, I would truly appreciate you sending me a copy of my contract from 2004, and we can go over it together; and you can point out to me where I apparently missed the part about having to buy copies of my own book to insure the best promotion. / / So please, send me a copy of my contract, so that I can see where this form of promotion is clearly stated. / / Sincerely, / / Timothy Goodwin-Author of “Pariah” / / If a copy of my contract is not sent to me in a timely fashion, I can only assume that you have no intention of sending it-or for that matter answering this email. In which case I will contact my attorney, and see if he can encourage that the contract be sent to me. / / I was once told by you, that a writer has a one out of 1% chance of seeing their book on the shelf. Now I find that the the percentage is greatly increased, depending on how much I can afford to spend. And don’t worry, I plan to display this letter in my Journal at Redbubble, along with all the other letters concerning my promotion and marketing, or the lack of ability to establish it, because I cannot afford to. / / I think that you are all being very unkind; especially after 6 years of supposed contract agreement.
