  • Built over three hundred years ago, the City (Citta Hompesch) of Zabbar’s Sanctuary houses the Statue of Our Lady of Graces. On the Feast Day of Our Lady (first Sunday after September 8th), the Statue is borne through certain streets of the City in a Procession which normally lasts for about 4 hours. The streets themselves are decorated with banners, lights and in some streets, Statues of Angels and other Religious figures are placed. The facade of the Sanctuary itself is decorated with fine drapes and thousands of coloured light-bulbs. As can be noticed, the Sanctuary has two clocks but only one shows the correct time. Traditionally this is to confuse the Devil when odered to collect lost souls on certain times thus giving more time to the sinner to repent before leaving this world.

  • Astyanax Arroz de Festa Astyanax – named after one of the several nymphalid butterflies, Basilarchia astyanax, recognisable by its blackish wings spotted with red. / Arroz de festa comes from the portuguese noun meaning ‘social butterfly’. / Our Astyanax here (on the right) is a real people person, loves company (rarely seen without Absinth by her side) and never goes anywhere without her red spotted black boots! In this piece Astyanax, an emerging artist, is portrayed during her debut show “Polka dots and Stripes” / Showcasing some of her more contoversal art, Astyanax likes to incorporate polka dots and stripes into her paintings, questioning the social boundaries of the times. / Showing at The Gallery for Freaks and Trippas, a place she frequents often, and is owned and managed by one of her many friends, Astyanax has never been happier! (tho she is suspicious of the photographer! lol!) originals drawn with biro pen on A4 paper / coloured in ps with airbrush. thankyou for taking the time to view my art and (hopefully) comment… / please have a look at my other artwork… / hope you enjoy! :) / Astyanax, Absinth and Azurite Verditer / Absinthe Verte / Azurite Verditer /

  • Beautifully lit-up facade at Festa time. This church is the parish church of the peaceful Balzan village in Malta and is dedicated to the annunciation of the Virgin Mary. / I did not have my tripod with me for this shot sadly.. but I just couldn’t resist taking this. / It was shot at 1/10 of a second at f8. ISO was 200 and focal length 32mm. PS. “Festa” is the Maltese word for feast. I guess it may be derived from the Spanish word ‘fiesta’ ?..

  • A couple of bearers have a little break…The statue they carry seems to get heavier at every turn..

  • Setting off fireworks at the local village ‘festa’, which is the maltese word for feast. This was shot with my mid-range zoom lens. It was a handheld shot. 1/10 sec at f4. ISO 200 and focal length 24mm. It was not easy to get this shot but I finally managed to get one I liked. I used to think that it was not possible to get a decent image hand-holding a camera in low light. Sometimes I like it when I prove myself wrong :) I would still rather have had my tripod with me though!!

  • In Malta, in the morning of the day before the Village Festa, it is the custom for the local Brass Band or Bands (some Towns and Villages have two Band Clubs constantly competing against each other to try and prove superiority) to march through certain streets of the Town or Village and play a series of Band Marches to amuse and entertain spectators and followers. While passing through these streets, a lot of confetti is thrown from balconies onto the band players and of course spectators alike.

  • The town of Cospicua (known as Bormla in Maltese) lies close to the dockyard, which still is one of the more important contributors to the Maltese economy. They celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception in this town on the 8th December; this is one of the incredibly ornate and colourful statuess and plinths which decorate the streets at this time, bringing a welcome touch of colour to the rather drab, industrial background. Pentax K 10D.

  • The town of Cospicua (Bormla to the Maltese) in the island of Malta celebrates its feast day (festa) on the 8th December (the feast of the Immaculate Conception) and here it is on that day in all its splendour. Pentax K 10D.

  • Festas Sanjoaninas, Terceira, Açores

  • The Church of San Lawrenz lit up for the Festa in Vittoriosa Malta. Taken aboard yacht in the Marina. I couldn’t quite lean out far enough and you can see the yacht down from us in the pic – just!Featured in Going Coastal and All things Maltese

  • Petal is one of the artists/performers amongst the Pako Festa 2009 parade. Pentax istDS Camera.

  • at Pako Festa was meant to catch his act (but couldn’t find it) I’ll have to make amends

  • Taken during the Pako Festa parade in Geelong. / / Pentax istDS Camera.

  • CAORLE – NORTH ITALY

  • Taken from the bow of our yacht in Grand Harbour Marina, Malta, without doubt the worlds most beautiful deep water harbour. During the Maltese festas all chirches are magnificently lit up, and look amazing. I just love the glow of the lights reflecting in the water – it feels so peaceful. That’s until the fireworks begin – and then – to say ‘noisy’ is an understatement…. / Featured in a EUROPA and Going Coastal.
