  • East opens the day at dawn, / Releasing the Sun / From night’s ebony box. / The mind awakes / with childlike delight. / Spring fills the breeze / with sweet flowers and the / shimmery sound of bells. / Here the birds unfurl their wings / and all the world takes flight. Elizabeth Barrette Ostara brings an optimistic energy as we celebrate the beginning of Spring and a turning point as the Northern Hemisphere once again tilts back towards the Sun. Until this tilt takes place, now is the time of balance – equal day and night – yet also a time of anticipation, as from this night forward, the light once again conquers the darkness. • Epona was the name given to the horse goddess of the Celts. Her worship, widely popular in territories occupied by Rome, was eventually adopted by the Roman armies as well, who honored her as the goddess who protected their stabled horses, while a similar goddess Bubona was alotted the protection of oxen and other cattle. Although she was honored among the insular Celts in Britain and Ireland, the greater number of inscriptions and statues of Epona come from the continent. She was depicted in three poses; astride a horse, standing beside a horse or (less frequently) lying naked on the horse. When these sculptures and bas-reliefs show her holding an emblem, it varies also: sometimes Epona carries a cornucopia, sometimes a goblet, but most often a round bowl or plate. / Said to be the offspring of a mare and a man, Epona could take the tangible forms of both parents. Sometimes, too, she appeared as a rushing river, which suggests she was a fertility goddess, seen by Celts as water spirits. / Black horse/death; Gray horse/life; White horse/birth-re-birth ~ symbolizing light, life and spiritual illumination. / Self ~ Power/Divine Feminine Epona Photograph of mandala sketch, painted, edited and redfield plug-in fractilius in photoshop7.

  • This was a logo draft I designed for a woman circle or network, / a female group, who came together once a week for meditations, discussions, support etc. I thought this might make a perfect T-shirt design, especially as the image has various double meanings – fertility, the female cycle, the cycle of birth and death, the earth goddess, female love, balance, yin & yang… The original is hand-drawn with black fineliner on Cartridge paper. I took the drawing into Illustrator and turned it into vector art, fine-tuned the curves, cleaned up the artwork etc. My girlfriend Breda, this is dedicated to you! • Sekhmet means “The Mighty One.” Sister Goddess to Bast, the lion-headed Sekhmet was the avenger / warrior Goddess in ancient Egypt and one of the most powerful of the Egyptian mythological gods and goddesses. She embodied the destructive force of the sun and she meted out divine punishment on behalf of the gods and the pharoahs. Conversely, she was also a goddess of healing and of surgery and medicines. She is usually depicted in red dress to denote her avenging nature and she is also known as the “Eye of Ra”. Original artwork measures 12.5×19 inches and was created with liquid copper leaf, gold paint pen, oil pastels, colored pencils, black art marker on heavy textured Strathmore paper. This artwork is a companion piece to my depiction of Sekhmet’s gentler sister Bast Bast of the Rising Sun View more of my artwork online at www.lynnetteshelley.com
