Gazing out to sea on a warm summer day, she notices something, some movement further out to see, was that a splash or just the sea crashing on a bombie or coral reef out there? squinting…..squinting…..squinting…..... oh my! it’s a white whale!....Migaloo no less!

  • Sales of this Design? – 1 sale so far :) / ‘Beach Series’ card by Karin Taylor Still Waters sold very early on, but she is one of my favourite images. I was inspired by Margaret Preston’s work on this occasion, wanting to give the impression of a print somehow. This is a mixed media production in which I used ink, pastel, acrylic and charcoal.

  • ‘Iliki’ Spirit of Aloha is a mixed media production on canvas textured paper using ink, pastel, acrylic and charcoal. My darling ‘Illiki’ was inspired by James Michener’s novel ‘Hawaii’ and the beautiful young hawaiian girl who is one of the charming characters early on in the story. I was completely swept away during the reading of this incredible novel, highly recommended reading :D I think that the song Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole really relates to the story …. as his melancholy voice is so melodically accompanied by the ukelele….. it reminds me of the story of Iliki the young hawaiian girl, who leaves her island when still very young…. forever she haunted the mind of the young minister missionary who tended her and taught her in his first days on the island, he forever wondered how she was faring in the civilised world, having been taken away on a ship by the white men. He felt a certain special kind of fatherly love for this girl, and it tore his heart that she was so clever and cottoned on so well to the new english language, and customs he would teach her, as well as the scriptures…but she was a wild thing, and never one to be ‘pigeon-holed’ or contained… he set her free and never saw her again. Here are the lyrics to Israel’s version of the song, i feel that is how the young missionary felt, even as he grew old on the island of Hawaiia, waiting hoping wondering with every ship that pulled in, whether the young girl Iliki would be aboard and he would welcome her return, sadly that day never came tho: SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW Ooooo oooooo ohoohohoo / Ooooo ohooohoo oooohoo / Ooooo ohoohooo oohoooo / Oohooo oohoooho ooooho / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo Somewhere over the rainbow / Way up high / And the dreams that you dreamed of / Once in a lullaby ii ii iii / Somewhere over the rainbow / Blue birds fly / And the dreams that you dreamed of / Dreams really do come true ooh ooooh / Someday I’ll wish upon a star / Wake up where the clouds are far behind me ee ee eeh / Where trouble melts like lemon drops / High above the chimney tops thats where you’ll find me oh / Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly / And the dream that you dare to,why, oh why can’t I? i iiii Well I see trees of green and / Red roses too, / I’ll watch them bloom for me and you / And I think to myself / What a wonderful world Well I see skies of blue and I see clouds of white / And the brightness of day / I like the dark and I think to myself / What a wonderful world The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky / Are also on the faces of people passing by / I see friends shaking hands / Saying, “How do you do?” / They’re really saying, I…I love you / I hear babies cry and I watch them grow, / They’ll learn much more / Than we’ll know / And I think to myself / What a wonderful world (w)oohoorld Someday I’ll wish upon a star, / Wake up where the clouds are far behind me / Where trouble melts like lemon drops / High above the chimney top that’s where you’ll find me / Oh, Somewhere over the rainbow way up high / And the dream that you dare to, why, oh why can’t I? I hiii ? Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo

  • Water is a scarce resource, in the desert, even more so. These women live in a village in the middle of the desert in western Rajasthan. Every morning they set off to collect water from the communal water tank, usually some distance away. You rarely see a man carrying water home, as it the responsibility of the woman to find and collect water for the family. Water is the gem and the women are the jewels.

  • Detail of the painting.. I started this painting about six months ago, prior to the move to Big Sur. I want to do a bit more work on it, some changes I’ve thought to make; I don’t have brushes and palette and canvases in there yet for instance; there’s a shadow on my right shoulder that isn’t quite what I was heading for….. / But awhile back and not the first time someone said to me, / “You do whatever you please!” / Which suprised me because it was said with exclamations and I thought pretty much that was common to the human experience. Of course I do. Don’t you? And somewhere along with all that, I started trying to identify what all I want in life and the answer is on this canvas, for starters. Which interestingly enough I began painting way before I had any idea I’d find a house to live in on Pfeiffer Beach. I’m not fully sure what I’ve got in here, the sun the moon the stars the ocean the wind the beach the mountains plants meadow dawn sunset clouds my favorite persimmon-painted wicker couch a pen to write with and paper for setting out the hieroglyphics with my right hand. I’m stirring the waters with my left hand, sending my thoughts into the ether via the breeze, imagining the unimaginable, and buck nekked before the universe because clothes are silly. / Oh one more thing. I fully expect to enjoy my life and for the learning to never end. Turns out I have full control over that. Which is why I look content. Howdy.
