Mr. and Mrs. Bluebird work as a team when feeding their babies. Both are avid hunters, going wherever the pickings can be found. In this case, Dad’s serving up cricket casserole while Mom’s whipping up some spider souffle. Babies aren’t particular; they eat just about anything. I love watching this pair appear at the nestbox with a wide variety of fare. Dad tends to serve things on a larger scale while Mom offers daintier portions. I saw him with multiple caterpillars dangling from his bill; quite a feat to catch and carry but he does it expertly! It’s very rare that both male and female land on a given spot together so I spliced two photos together in order to convey the idea of their concerted efforts on behalf of their little family.
Daffodils in the soft spring sunlight seem to me to be pure sunshine. The original painting is watercolour on Fabriano Artistico 140lb cold press paper, 12.5×10 inches. The exciting news is that it has already been featured on RedBubble!

Featured in Dimensions, Nirvana, Canadiana, Eagles Only, and 300+ Go Long. In this fourth shot of my bald eagles’ nest series, the mother bald eagle has just joined her two young at the end of the day. The whole family sleeps together in two large coniferous trees. In the two weeks I have been shooting and observing at the nest, “dad” always arrives last at the end of the day. Soon the young fledged eagles will be on their own, completely abandoned by their parents. In this shot, she is certainly giving me the eye, as she hides herself within the protective bows of fir tree next to the nesting tree. Captured on the Fraser River in Delta, British Columbia, using a Nikon D300 and Nikkor f4 600 mm lens, on a Gitzo tripod, ISO 640, -0.33 EV, f4, 1/100s.
/ / A little bit of nostalgia running through this drawing, with the good old love beads, i always love wearing love beads, and I still have some which are orange and lime … and another strand of blue and white. You can wear them so many different ways. The image was drawn in pencil on cartridge paper in my A3 spiral bound art journal and after photographing I coloured her digitally on the computer. Before I took the photo I actually painted her ‘love beads’ with acrylics and inks…and i stuck a fimo flower on her beads, which i made for another application, and then painted it naples yellow with a white centre.

Steer II (Missy Higgins) / / Pencil drawing, digital colouring The Golden Elephant – story and art by Karin Taylor / A long long time ago in a tropical land where the papaya grow wild and free, there lived a golden elephant who’s beauty was unsurpassed. All the creatures were mesmerised by what appeared to be the sun entering the water when she swam and when she walked on the land everyone stepped aside, as elephants were revered. Legend has it, the golden elephant was once a beautiful warrior princess. Once, in midst of of a terrible battle with her enemy about to take her life, she made a wish that she could become an elephant, for then no harm would come to her. The beautiful warrior princess was granted her wish, tho could sadly not return to her human form, and so it was that the golden elephant lived forever, bringing warmth and light wherever she went. During the darkest nights when the stars hid and the moon disappeared, the beautiful golden elephant shone like the sun, lighting the way for pilgrims on their journey. Although very happy she got what she wished for, the golden elephant found herself still thinking the grass was sometimes greener on the other side. Indeed she would have liked to be human again. But she accepted her new role and did the best she could with her gift of light. Gaia (or Gaea) is the elemental earth goddess in Greek mythology. She is the primal embodiment of earth and her name literally means Earth or Land in ancient Greek. She is considered a Mother Goddess or Great Goddess in the Greek pantheon. She is often depicted as a mature buxom woman.
