This is an irked bluestripe garter snake giving me his death glare. See, we aren’t supposed to have this species of snake in my area (Gainesville, Florida), which meant that I just had to capture him for a few photos. To get to him, I had to lunge into cattails and grasses by a pond (nevermind that I nearly fell in) and grab him and pull him out. Understandably, he wasn’t happy about this, and he let me know by biting me. Repeatedly. So I crouched on the ground with the snake in my one bloody hand and my camera in the other and took some photos. This one I think came out the best, as it shows his serious (and justified!) annoyance at me. It was a great experience on the whole, and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. :) 100% of the profits from the sale of my work featuring reptiles will be donated to Wildlife Warriors Worldwide in honor of Steve Irwin who educated the world about these amazing creatures.

Judith suggested Rainy street could be in B&W. She has great B&W work and has been an inspiration to me. So I tried with PS to convert the photo into B&W. But I’m new to PS and don’t know if I did it right. Please let me know what you think about the tones, contrast, textures… will a more grainy feel help? Thank you.

Scarification is a means of permanently marking the skin by cutting alone, without the use of pigments. The scars may be lighter or darker than your original skin tone and may raise up (keloid scarring). There are many ways to produce a scar but the cut must always penetrate the dermis if a scar is to be produced. The result depends as much on your skin as the method used. Black skin in particular is very good at producing pronounced keloid scars and this is a popular alternative to tattooing for people with very dark skin, for whom a tattoo might not show up very well. In many parts of Africa these scars are marks of beauty and a way to identify someone belonging to a particular group. Scarification also may mark one’s status as a civilized being, adult, or member of a specific ethnic group or initiation association. I spend a day in his school in a remote village of Benin to work on the Art in All of Us activities (www.artinallofus.org). I had really a great time thanks to the kids creativity. This beautiful little thing is actually really tiny. / Not much larger than a small button. I found it in my grandmother’s garden this morning. Nature is truly mysterious. 2/3-08 Thank you so much for all your kind comments on my work. That truly means a lot to me.
