This husband and wife were originally from Chennai, India, but have moved to Alleppey in search of work. This doorway is their home. What struck me was how proud they were of each other, and how they showed immense affection and respect towards one another. They DEMANDED to be photographed. The nicest people we met in all of India … and quite possibly the nicest two people we’ve met anywhere (typical of Chennai people). I wish them the best of luck.

I was watching the movie “The Ultimate Gift” listening to the character played by James Garner talking to his grandson when he said… ‘Learning is a gift… even if pain is your teacher”. As soon as the words had finished coming out of his mouth I honestly said out loud – YES!! Immediately I was blown away by the quote and I wrote it down and thought about its meaning for weeks. I’ve never felt so affected by a sentence before. Upon reflecting this quote I found quite confronting to realise that I spent my twenties doing everything to avoid and “run away” from my emotional pain.. Now in my 30s I’ve realised that pain was essential for me to be a more caring, less-judgemental and forgiving person. Pain seems to show us the truth in others… the truth that all people, no matter what’s on the outside… have a heart capable of breaking on the inside. My Website This image came to me the other day while listening to Battlefield on the radio in the car. I’ve been working on it ever since. There was only one model that fit the scene, so I’ve had to bring back Manny the mannequin. Might have to do another series…......? this is really importan picture, made with the remnants of the berlin wall, at that place, where the first crack was done. I was born in east berlin, my parents were east. The wall fell when I was 3 years old, but my parents were still east. I grew up in east berlin, had eastern teachers and friends. For me, berlin and germany, was always one. but for them, it was always seperated. They tried to teach me that, but I didn’t listen. It was just annoying to me. I try to make all of mine frustration on that topic, and some critism, that this wall still exist in some heads 20 years after it fell, into a picture. during the time I made this picture, I was in love with a girl from westberlin – who rejected me. That’s probably one topic of this picture is love. / Those two people on the picture, my friends, were in love with each other at that time. Allthough they never got together. They never could confess their feelings. It’s just like there’s been this invisible wall beetween them. This was the first time, I could make one of my visions, my frustration, my feelings and other feelings into one picture. After that, I took photography more seriously. But at that shooting, I was just happy. I was finally able to say something, I always wanted to say.
