  • Never HDr’d Ducks before, thought i would give it a go, taken as our little girl was feeding them. I am quite pleased with the out come!

  • This was one of those days when I’d been out with my camera without a particular goal. I like to keep an open mind and open eyes when I go out for a walk or drive in the country and just see what presents itself in the way of a possible photograph. I was on my way home and driving past a series of very well-maintained farms when I passed this rather ramshackle place with the cows feeding in the late afternoon. The sun was still fairly high but they were standing in a circle of light under the trees and it really caught my eye.

  • WILD & FREE / / Gentoo Penguin about to feed its Chick. (Antarctic Peninsula) Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice reduces vital food sources, such as krill. / / Gentoos are now listed as nearly endangered on the IUCN Red List. / / / / /

  • Experimenting with my new toy, a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D and decided to see if my beloved Daisy would stay still long enough to get 3 exposures off for a HDR shot. On the first attempt, she winked in the 3rd exposure but second time around I’m happy with the result. I did it spur of the moment, hand held inside with poor lighting but this cheap little Nikon 50mm handled it very well and keeps impressing me every time I pick it up. Shot specs for anyone interested: Nikon D90, Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8 @ 1.8, 1/40 sec, ISO 200, no flash or tripod (hand held), HDR’d in Photomatix with 3 exposures of MTR, -2 & +2, quick crop etc in iPhoto.

Their mother is Bela and he father is Troy. / Taken with Sony Cybershot 2 May 2009 The Rottweiler, or Rottweil Metzgerhund (“Butchers Dog”), is a “medium to large size, stalwart dog” breed originating in Germany as a herding dog. It is a hardy and very intelligent breed. Rottweilers also worked as draught dogs, pulling carts to carry meat and other products to market. “Rottweiler breeders aim at a dog of abundant strength, black coated with clearly defined rich tan markings, whose powerful appearance does not lack nobility and which is exceptionally well suited to being a companion, service and working dog.” The Rottweiler was kept busy in these traditional roles until the mid-19th century when railroads replaced droving for getting livestock to market. Although there are still Rottweilers working stock all over the world, many other roles have been found for this versatile breed. During the first and second World Wars, Rottweilers were put into service in various roles including as messenger, draught and guard dogs. Currently they are often used as search and rescue, assistance, guide dogs for the blind, guard and police dogs in addition to their traditional roles. Although an extremely versatile breed used in recent times for many other purposes, the Rottweiler is first and foremost one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of herding breeds. A multi-faceted herding and stock protection dog of exceptional ability, it is capable of working all kinds of livestock under a wide variety of conditions. The breed is an ancient one, whose history stretches back to the Roman Empire. In those times, the legions traveled with their meat on the hoof and required the assistance of working dogs to herd the cattle. One route the army traveled was through Württemberg and on to the small market town of Rottweil. The principal ancestors of the first Rottweilers during this time was supposed to be the Roman droving dog, local dogs the army met on its travels, and dogs with molosser appearance coming from England and The Netherlands. This region eventually became an important cattle area, and the descendants of the Roman cattle dogs proved their worth in both driving and protecting the cattle from robbers and wild animals. However, by the end of the 19th century as railroads became the main method for moving stock to market, the breed had declined so much that in 1900 there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil. • Taken at north horn divesite in the Great Barrier Reef. An image of blacktip & whitetip reefsharks feeding on tuna heads.

  • I watched two of this little robin’s siblings leave the nest pretty readily, but this last one seemed to require a little extra encouragement. Maybe it was because after the other’s had fledged, Mom and Dad brought back about seven worms and there was no competition left for those worms.

  • My image “Feeding Time” was featured in the I Love Birds group on 16 June 2009. ....was also featured in the Top Shelf Wildlife & Nature Art group on 18 June 2009. ...also was featured in the group Retired and Happy , 4 a day limit on 21 June 2009… ! ! ! I went for a bike ride this morning, and heard this chirping. I looked up at this Hydro pole and saw all the action. This is a Pileated Woodpecker feeding her babies. Model: Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi f stop: F/8.0 exposure: 1/500 sec. focal length: 300.0 mm shutter speed (tv): 9 Description: 17” (43cm). A crow sized woodpecker. Black with white neck stripes, conspicous white wing linings, and prominent red crest. Moustache is red in male, black in female. Voice: A loud, flicker like, cuk-cuk-cuk-cuk, and rising and then falling in pitch and volume. Habitant: Mature forests and borders…..Nesting: 4 white egs in a tree cavity ( in this case a Hydro Pole). Resident from British Columbia east across Canada to Nova Scotia, south to California, Southern Idaho, Eastern North Dakota, Central Texas, and Florida. Footnotes: Despite its size, this elegant woodpecker is often shy and hard to observe. Obtaining a close view of one is often requires careful stalking. Although primarily a forest bird, the “Logcock” has recently become adapted to civilization and has become relatively numerous even on the outskirts of large cities, where its presence is most easily detected by its loud, ringing call and by its large, characteristically rectangular excavations in trees.. Location : Down the street from my daughter’s house in Charleswood, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

  • Featured Rural Around the Globe. Well not really playing. Actually, after killing the little fish by bashing its head against the steel piling, this female belted kingfisher is tossing the little fish (probably salmon) to position it for swallowing. This is all very nimble and skilful. During a 3 hour period that I watched her, some of it from a great distance, she repeated this scene several times, indicating that she is well fed. This photo was shot at the Campbell River estuary on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, using a Nikon D700, Nikkor 600 mm f4 lens, and Nikon 1.4 teleconverter (ISO 800, -0.67 EV, f5.6, 1/1250s). • While shooting shorebirds at Sandy Hook, I noticed a juvenile common tern screaming loudly on the end of a jetty with mom and dad nowhere in sight. I climbed out onto the rocks and figured if I waited long enough a parent might come and feed it. Twenty minutes later I saw an adult tern fishing just off the jetty. After awhile it caught a small fish, and quickly flew to the rocks and fed the juvenile. • Another image taken out from one of the images I took in Paris, outside of the Notre Dame Cathedral, where some children were bird feeding. It reminds me of the “Strength of Life” (La Forza della Vita), an old Italian song by Paolo Vallesi. One of the most beautiful and strongest songs I’ve ever heard. / ___ The Strength of Life “Even when we give up / because of anger or violence / because of an inconsolable love / even when home is the most uninhabitable place / and you cry and don’t know what you want / Believe, there is a strength inside us / stronger than this useless and crazy world’s light / it is stronger than an incomprehensible death / and than this nostalgia that never leaves us When you touch bottom with your fingers / all of a sudden you will feel the strength of life / that will pull you along / love, you don’t know but / you will see that there is an exit Even when you feel pain / and in silence you hear your heart / as an unbearable sound / and you can’t stand up / and the world is unreachable / even when hope is not enough There’s this will that challenges death / it is our dignity, the strength of life / that never asks what eternity is / even when there is someone to offend it / or when someone sells you the “beyond” When you feel it pulling you by your fingers / you will recognize the strength of life / that will pull you along / don’t let go / don’t leave me without you Even inside the prisons of our hypocrisy / even in hospitals with this new disease / there is this strength to watch over us / and that you will recognize / it is the most persistent strength that we have / inside / that dreams and never gives up It is this will / the most fragile and infinite / our dignity / the strengtt of life My love it is this strength of life / that never wonders what eternity is / and that everyday fights next to us / and will never end When you feel it pulling you by your fingers / you will recognize the strength of life The strength is inside us / baby soon or later you will feel it / the strength of life / that will pull you along and whispers softly: / look how much life is still left”

  • a brilliant male cardinal braves the winter snow storm, as he sits on a snow covered pine branch. Cardinals are quite tough creatures, and seem to reliush the snow. There is always a flurry of activity aroiund the sunflower seed feeder during a snowy period. It was snowing heavily on the day I took this photo (12-6-09), in fact, we got about twenty six inches, a hefty amount for us.
