And orphaned elephant at feeding time in the Nairobi elephant orphanage. Each day the baby elephants are brought out for a public feeding to help fund the orphanage. Of course everyone is kept back but it is very cool to be that close! / . / . /

The Gulf Fritillary, Agraulis vanillae, a striking, bright orange butterfly of the family Nymphalidae, subfamily Heliconiinae. These were formerly classified in a separate family, the Heliconiidae or longwing butterflies, and like other longwings this species does have long, rather narrow wings in comparison with other butterflies. It is not closely related to the true fritillaries. It is a medium to large butterfly, with a wingspan of from 6 to 9.5 cm. Its underwings are buff, with large silvery spots. It takes its name from the fact that migrating flights of the butterflies are sometimes seen over the Gulf of Mexico. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- 2009 BUTTERFLIES CALENDAR / / / / / / Or a T-Shirt to go along with /

My father found some abandoned baby rabbits near their house. These are my mother’s hands trying to keep them alive. Note to anyone who finds a motherless nest: / Anyone who does find a nest that appears to be motherless, leave the babies alone and watch to see if the mother returns. Just keep an eye out from a safe distance. If after a day or so she doesn’t return, then it’s usually safe to say the babies need assistance.

A group of nine Humpbacks bubble-netting near Tenakee Springs, Alaska. The most amazing wildlife experience that I have witnessed. We had a sonarphone in the water and heard the singing during the set up and the trumpet indicating it was done. A mystical experience.
Baby bluey begging for food, quite capable of feeding himself, love the way they try it on.
Featured in 100% in January 2009. I visited the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand in May 2007. At the end of the day, Lek, the amazing Thai woman who started the park for injured and orphaned elephants, came for a visit. Both the elephants and all the dogs at the park came running to see her, and to have a little snack. Please click here to find out more about the park. The New Holland Honeyeaters at The Berry Farm near Margaret River have developed a taste for caster sugar. Put a spoonful in your hand and you will have half-a-dozen sitting on there fighting for room. They would often get the sugar stuck to their beaks. The one on the right was actually eating the sugar off the beak of the other bird.

The Sentinel / An original image I shot here in Anderson, Ca on 06/14/09….I have been keeping my Hummingbird feeders full, and it’s paying off – this year the birds are very aggressive…..as many as six in one setting, flying in, dancing and standing their ground (air) and defending their space for that heavenly nectar which I brew myself…I park a chair right in the middle of them and they make my hair stand on end as they fly right into my face and let me know that I am an uninvited guest; though, I do believe that they are finally getting used to me….and also to Mingo who is always at my feet. Here is the killer of my little friend “stripey”, caught in the act, red handed!! There is obviously no love in the jumping spider species world, and competition for food is top priority. This one a female Green Jumping Spider, much like the other I photographed on the same day. This one was smaller than the other Green Jumper however, at about 5mm in length. The poor little spider in it’s mouth I shot earlier Click Here to view that shot.. Mt Cootha botanical gardens, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Canon 5D Mk II, 65mm, 4x. a black-capped chickadee strikes a most handsome pose, stopping on a pine bough to overlook the sunflower seed feeder. Normally, they don’t sit long enough to get a good shot, but today, he decided to give me a break. /
