Size: 21cm x 29.5cm / _______ / This is a painting of Nefertari, favourite queen (1300 – 1250 BC) of Pharaoh Rameses II (1279 – 1213 BC). When her burial tomb was dicovered in the Valley of the Queens in 1904, it was described as the most beautiful tomb ever, by Italian Egyptologist Ernesto Schiaparelli. The tomb (or hypogeum) was built on the scale of a pharaoh’s tomb, decorated with paintings of astonishing beauty. / _____ / I added a cartouche and some hieroglyphics that was found in her tomb, on the right of her image in the painting. Some info about the cartouche: Like the body, the ba (soul), the ka (life force) and the shadow, the name, was regarded as an essential element of every individual. It had to be included in the deceased’s tomb to ensure survival in the afterlife. Nefertari’s name (enclosed in the royal cartouche), took the form of a statement: “beloved of Mut”. / _____ / Image copyright: Mariaan Krog 2008 / _____ / Available to buy in all print sizes. • A4 sized Acrylic painting done on Medium Texture Artist Canvas (Acrylic Primed) – 330GSM / ___________ / My version of the famous Nefertiti bust discovered in 1912 by archeologist Ludwig Borchardt at Tell-el-Amarna (site of Akhenaten’s new city). / _________ / In 1912, excavations by archeologist Ludwig Borchardt at Tell-el-Amarna – the site of Akhenaten’s new capital city, Akhetaten, which was abandoned soon after his death – unearthed the workshop of the pharaoh’s favourite sculptor, Thutmose. Among several unfinished works and busts found at the site – including a set of plaster heads of members of the royal family that were presumably used as models for stone sculptures – was a bust of Nefertiti rendered in painted limestone, and finished but for the left eye. This piece, one of the most celebrated of all surviving artworks of the New Kingdom, has secured for Thutmose a modern-day repuation as a master sculptor. / __________ / Image copyright: Mariaan Krog 2008 – For buying info, see top right of this page. / ____________ / /

  • Medium: Pencil on AMEDEO 200GSM Artist’s Sheet. / Size: A4 Greek Mythology: Icarus. My drawing as tribute to the great artist Steele Savage. See some of his artworks here ________________________________________________________________________ Icarus (Greek: Ἴκαρος, Latin: Íkaros, Etruscan: Vicare) is a character in Greek mythology. He is the son of Daedalus and is commonly known for his attempt to escape Crete by flight, which ended in a fall to his death. Escape from Crete / Icarus’ father, Daedalus, a talented craftsman, attempted to escape from his exile in Crete, where he and his son were imprisoned at the hands of King Minos, the king for whom he had built the Labyrinth. Daedalus, the master craftsman, was exiled because he gave Minos’ Daughter, Ariadne, a clew of string in order to help Theseus survive the Labyrinth. Daedalus fashioned a pair of wax wings for himself and his son. Before they took off from the island, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, nor too close to the sea. Overcome by the sublime feeling that flying gave him, Icarus soared through the sky joyfully, but in the process he came too close to the sun, which melted his wings. Icarus kept flapping his wings but soon realized that he had no feathers left and that he was only flapping his bare arms. And so, Icarus fell into the sea in the area which bears his name, the Icarian Sea near Icaria, an island southwest of Samos. Hellenistic writers who provided philosophical underpinnings to the myth also preferred more realistic variants, in which the escape from Crete was actually by boat, provided by Pasiphaë, for which Daedalus invented the first sails, to outstrip Minos’ pursuing galleys, and that Icarus fell overboard en route to Sicily and drowned. Heracles erected a tomb for him. SOURCE / /

  • The Vervet Monkey, sometimes simply known as the Vervet, is the common name of the species Chlorocebus pygerythrus, an Old World monkey in the family Cercopithecidae. (The common term “vervet” is also sometimes used to refer to all the members of the genus Chlorocebus.) The Vervet Monkey ranges throughout much of Southern and East Africa, being found from Ethiopia and Somalia south to South Africa. In my country, they are everywhere, but tourists will probably see more of them in our national parks. This painting took me 4 hours to complete. A4 sized AMEDEO Artist Sheet – 200 GSM – Gouache / Gouache ORIGINAL SOLD: 19 August 2009. On my birthday, what a great birthday gift! / ________________________________ / / /
