Hello hello! We’ve just rolled out this weeks release, the highlights include: A real credit card system / You can now pay for stuff with a credit card without having to use PayPal—you can do it all without leaving RedBubble. Previously, this was only available as an option for orders in Australian dollars. PayPal is still an option, of course. Clear GIFs over the larger images / By popular demand! If you really want to discourage people from downloading the larger versions of your images, there’s an option in your profile to do so. Please understand it’s impossible to prevent downloading of images displayed on web pages (they can still do a screen capture, for example), but activitating this feature will make it more difficult. Interesting nerdy sidenote: GIF is pronounced “JIFF”. The pre-loading images experiment / After the main art & clothing gallery pages load, we’re pre-loading the images for the next page in the background, so that when you click “next” the page should load much faster for most people. It’s an experiment, but it seems to be working really well so far. The activity footer experiment / In another experiment, we’re putting the two most recent activity events down above the footer. The theory is that users might accidentally discover new stuff that they may not have found any other way, and we’ll see how that goes. Featured and recent work in the group home pages / We’re showing two rows of both now, instead of one or the other. Also / There’s the usual bug fixes, tweaks, etc. We know we’re a little behind on launching of new groups that have been proposed—please be patient! Enjoy! — Justin & Co

Yes, the little feature that I spent half a day writing (and the dev team spent the rest of the week finishing) is here. You can now send a short message to another artist on RedBubble by following the link on the profile or works view page. Thanks to Grant’s powers of Photoshop you even get a nifty unread mail notification on the top of the page when someone has sent you a BubbleMail. If you don’t want people to nag you then you’ll find a link to disable your BubbleMail under the edit profile page. In terms of features BubbleMail is a bit sparse, but rather than let you wait another week we figured we’d release it now and let you have a play. A big thanks to John, Grant and Xavier for getting BubbleMail across the line. Cheers Dave

Whew! That was a long downtime, sorry for taking so long… Hello Bubbleologists! I’m pleased to announce that we’ve just rolled out our weekly(-ish) release which contains many wonderful things, including… Featuring Work and People in Groups, Redesign, etc We’re mid-way through some redesign and re-structuring of groups. One of the things we were really keen to release was hosts featuring work from their group. It’s a mixture of art/writing/clothing (to keep things simple) and as hosts start featuring work in your groups, the group home pages will start showing the featured work. This led to a mini-redesign of the group navigation, page layouts, etc. We’re not done, but we think it’s a great start. Hosts: Start featuring work from your group, and we’ll probably post some more info in the hosts forum soon. Search Redesign The search screens have been redesigned to make them a bit easier to use, and a bit better for search engines to index your lovely content. VAT As announced a little way back, we’re now charging VAT on all orders being shipped to addresses in the UK. Those pesky bought/sold things We’ve removed the “bought work” and “sold work” things off everyone’s profile. They caused a whole lot of extra load on the servers, so the simplest thing to do was remove them. But if you guys really miss them, we’ll find a way to bring them back without crushing the servers—let us know what you think. More Red Dots We’ve started handing out a few more of those little red dots to people in the community, recognizing their contribution as volunteers. The first to be “dotted” are Colin Tobin and Imogene Munday, but we have a few more on the list to contact over the next few days, including kseriphn, Martin Pot, Anne van Alkemade, Kathleen, Damien Mason and Faizan Qureshi. Thank you! Etc That’s about it this week, with the usual bug fixes and miscellany. For those of you wondering if you just missed an entire day of your life, no, we’re just releasing on Wednesday instead of Thursday this week because of a public holiday in Melbourne soon. Also, check out Stiched 9.9 from the Ministry of T-Shirts too! — Justin on behalf of many other people

Ahoy! We just pushed out this morning’s release, and I have great pleasure in announcing the following bits and pieces. Boring but important things first: We need you to all go into your payment details and set your preference for the currency in which you wish to be paid. We’re giving ya’ll one week to set it, after that it’s going to be compulsory (we’ll insert a best guess for everyone) and hard to change (because our accountant complains a lot). There’s a new MyBubble Overview which now lists your groups (and the most recent thing that happened in each of them) right beside your activity. I really want to spend some more time tidying up inside MyBubble, as soon as Pete will let me—start your lobbying now! There’s a new Buy Wall Art page, which is the first of many steps we’re taking to help buyer’s find the stuff they’re looking for. Obviously there’s a T-Shirt and Greeting Card version coming ASAP. Be sure to check out the bling when clicking the “more” arrows! And finally, Group Moderators can now send a BubbleMail to all members of a group, to make group announcements a little easier. The rest of our time was spent on things that you can’t see but you’ll probably feel them over time, like making it easier for our fulfillment houses to get stuff printed and shipped faster, which is always a Good Thing™. — Justin

  • RedBubble Thursday makes a comeback!

Ahoy! It’s been a massive couple of weeks, and we’ve been pushing as hard as we can to get things in place before the inevitable Christmas slow-down, which has made our usual release process and schedule a little random, but I think it’s been worth the disturbance. Here’s the highlights of the stuff we’ve been working on since the last release (almost 2 weeks): Watermarking: By incredibly popular demand, you can now choose to have a small or large watermark placed on all of your images. The preference is in the usual spot, you can see samples of the current designs here, and those that had the old small “copyright” watermark have been given the new small one by default. Speaking of which, we’ve ditched the copyright notice watermark in favor of a RedBubble logo because many artists felt they were forced to use the watermark to assert their ownership, as images without the watermark appeared not copyrighted, which is of course utterly incorrect, but hard to explain to people. Instead, we assert your copyright/ownership of the image on the zoom view, and will continue to assert your ownership and rights in many places. BubbleMail: Also by popular demand, you can now delete your BubbleMail and group BubbleMails have a different icon. Order Status: You can now find out more about the status of your order by clicking the where’s my order? link in the footer. We don’t have tracking of the shipping codes yet, but that’s most definitely going to happen. Groups: You can search for groups within the groups section. It’s not in the main search screen because that’s getting rebuilt in the new year. We’ve had some fun polishing up the buy t-shirts page, showing more tees and generally playing around with some ideas we have. We’ll be testing this against the success of the older design, then moving forward with the other ones (cards, wall-art, etc). Facebook: There’s a new FB app which adds the flash widget to your profile, which you can find through MyBubble > Promote down the bottom. Writing: We now have a featured writing to match the existing featured art and clothing pages. It’s maintained by the same mystery set of people who have access to the magic password, but we’ve added some new people to the mix who have wonderful taste when it comes to the written word. Product Info: We have the beginnings of some new product information pages that we can point people to instead of the ugly old FAQs, so that buyers are well-informed about our high-quality production, and have more confidence buying your stuff. Tees: We’ve darkened the Navy and Forest tee preview color to better match reality. It’s really hard to convey this in the preview, but printing black ink on these colors is pretty much useless, so if you’re the kind of designer that just checks all the boxes, please go back and make sure your designs will look okay on the darker colors. Greeting Cards: We’ve increased the base manufacturing price from AU$2.50 to AU$3.00 simply because the cards take much, much longer to make than we originally forecast. Free Shipping Continues: If your order contains 4 tees or 4 posters or 4 mounted prints or 4 laminated prints or 2 framed prints or 50 cards, you’ll get free standard shipping on the entire order. So, if you order 4 tees the entire order is shipped for free no matter what else you have in the order. Image Quality: The base images we use to build our various thumbnails off are now larger and of much better quality, which means your work will look better, everywhere! We’re in the process of re-doing all the old ones, which will take a couple of days. Image Proportions: The size of our zoom views are now more balanced (similar number of pixels) so that portraits, panoramas and odd-shaped images appear similar in size to regular ones. There’s more we want to do here for sure, including the same kind of relative sizing in the main view. ...and the usual swag of bug fixes and little things you can go discover for yourself! This next week is one of our infrequent “weeks off” where we do a bit more thinking and talking and planning instead of writing code flat out. The llamas usually come up with some cool stuff during these weeks, but who knows! After that, we should have a pretty good plan in place for the next month or two of work. We have no shortage of ideas, and we know there’s heaps of stuff you still really really need, so hang in there! — Justin

  • Welcome my fellow Deviants!
by John De Bord Photography IPA

Welcome my fellow Deviants! Greetings to all of you that took my advice in my journal...

Welcome my fellow Deviants! Greetings to all of you that took my advice in my journal over on deviantArt and came over here to RedBubble! There have been quite a few it seems to come on over and explore things. This place is quite different than DA as you may be finding out, but the differences I feel are also better as you will see. So I thought that I would go ahead and throw a little primer together for you guys, kinda a FYI for ya! I hope this helps you guys! I also am going to feature a few works from some of ya down below :) 1) RedBubble is FOR the Artist!- DA charges people for having a ‘subscription’ and also a ‘premium prints subscription’. When a user does NOT have a premium print subscription, they can only make 10% profit of their sales. When they have a premium subscription, artist only gets 50% of markup with DA getting the other 50% of artist profit. RedBubble is 100% free, costs nothing to join, there is NO member subscription, the artist keeps 100%!! of ALL profits with RB only getting the base price. There is NO ‘premium print subscription” on RB. 2) NO Popularity Contest Here!- Yes You read right, there is NO popularity contest here. Everyone is one and the same, all on the same level. Sure, your statts are accessible but are NOT displayed on the front of your page. In fact they are actually kind of hard to find lol I don’t even recall where they are at! There is no “popular” area of any kind, and all that there is really is the art of the front page. Nice huh? Thought many of you would like that! 3) A Structured Groups/Clubs System—- DA has been saying that they would something in this form now for years, literally, it took RB like a week to do it lol You can see all the groups here 4) Borders and Watermarks—-Do NOT add border for images which you are uploading here, as it generally a pain in the rear for when they print things. As such, they discourage it. The same for watermarks, as RB has a built in watermarking system, and if you upload an image that has a watermark then that image when sold will have one on it. (Though I am sure they would flag it first) 5) * True Theft Prevention!-* RB has an option that places a 1 pixel gif overlay on top of your images, so when someone tries to download an image of yours, instead they get a 1px gif! 6) The HTML here—- Ok all things considered, the HTML here is a lil whacky and unique. There is a cheat Sheet there that will help you will that and also a Firefox extension you can use, which I use and has been a total lifesaver. 7* *Getting Started On RB!- There is a BUNCH of things that have been posted here in the forums to help you guys out! When in doubt, always head there. These forums are VERY different than DA as teh age here is older and the atmosphere much more professional. Tutorials and Tips for Newcomers There is a wealth of info there including how to make a site badge, slideshows showing your RB portfolio, banner images, How to make T-shirts for sale, etc etc. 8*) “The Atmosphere Here!-” It is quite different as you will see. The owners of the site and admins are VERY friendly and helpful, and are fellow full time artist’s as well. The age here is older, as you will notice right away! Many of the people who I have brought here have actually left DA and haven’t looked back simply because they like it better and feel much more comfortable. 9)* “The Upload Process here—-” It is a lil slower, because the servers are in Australia, but not by much. And that is the only slower thing about this site, it loads faster, as a whole, pages and images fly when you click on them. 10) “NO Adverts!-” Yes that is correct, no adverts anywhere, period, which makes for an awesome experience for anyone who sees your work. It also makes for a nice site to send family and friends to show your work. Art the way it is meant to be seen, as art! All In All—- I hope you guys really enjoy it here. It is a really exceptional site that very much has the artist in mind. This is something that I think has been needed. Anyways, if ya all have any questions, please feel free to ask me, and I will help as I can as per usual! Hope ya all like the features below! —-John

  • Shirtheads - featuring thickblackoutline
    by caanan

Does this week’s Shirthead victim, thickblackoutline !http://images-1.redbubble.co…

Does this week’s Shirthead victim, thickblackoutline really need an introduction? Then again, implying that one’s work is so idiosyncratic and recognisable it doesn’t NEED an introduction, is in fact, an introduction, isn’t it? phew My head hurts. I wasn’t inspired by any one tshirt this week, but more a common thread (get it?) appearing throughout TBO’s tshirts. That’s right… HAIR! :oD What is the appeal of Japanese art? The appeal is the culture, the complex minimalism, the food (!)..... I think its all related to who i was in a past life, I really connect to it on more than just a “i love sushi” sort of level. its more like a i’ve seen this, or i’m meant to be doing this. i think its really been around all my life. From my dad reading the Shogun series and me looking at the front covers in admiration when i was little… to eating sushi from a young age. I’m allergic to seaweed, it gives me crippling migraines, shame it took me 17 years to work that one out! So only the “top shelf, professional, lvl 72 mage” sushi for me! And what about the Thick Black Outline? Where did that come from? Do you ever get the desire to break free from it? Is there another style you’re itching to do, but people may be wanting you to stay in your current style because it’s individualistic and unique? TBO came from art school ~ should I even be saying this? ~ we used to have this injoke of saying “oh, that looks so cool but if you put a thick black out line around it would be 10 times better” lol. that really stuck with me after all these years, b/c it was true… it seems to be around a lot in cartoons, here on The Bub (i LOVE to see other people do it), i’ve seen McDonald’s use it… i’m not claiming to own it, mine is thicker than usual! ;) everyone should try it at least once and see what happens. To be honest i do feel a lot of pressure to stay in my style around here, but its all self inflicted. I don’t do a TBO for pieces that are too complex, it’s just not called for. But when i really want it to pop, i’ll use one… or if i want to get fancy.. 2!! I’d really like to get back into doing a more sketchy scribbly style of my yesteryear. What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? It was a pink shirt with Dick Dastardly and Mutley from the Wacky Races on it. It truly was a gem and I begged my mum to buy it for me when i was like 4 or 5. She didn’t want to get it b/c it seemed ‘evil’ and he was the ‘badie’, yet i believe my winning argument was that it was on pink! yay! What did you want to be when you were 6 years old? I wanted to be an architect. I really liked, and still like, looking at buildings, all the design elements, angles, and little parts that go into making it unique. Before that I wanted to be a model on the Price is Right, I’d practice the hand movements in my bedroom!! LOL! Who would you invite to a tea party to make it the most awesomest tea party ever staged? AHHH, well it would look something like The Tea Party for starters, which would be serviced by my fleet of stoned monk ninja sushi chef green tea bearers. We all need them, I have 10. And the guests would include, Jimi Hendrix, Flea, Michael Stipe, Freud, my year 12 Studio Arts teacher, the Dalai Lama, Kermit the Frog, Cookie Monster, and some of my long time fav kids from around these parts, Craig, Jumpy, Webgrrl, Scott, Chris, Lostboy, Sjem, Mikoto, bigfatrobot, onetonshadow, you caanan of course ;).... There’d be sushi and the most decadent cakes my fleet stoned monk ninja sushi chef green tea bearers can prepare, many based around white chocolate, milk chocolate and chili, and coffee… did i mention chocolate? Excellent beverages of course. The musical entertainment would be some smooth jazz cruisey thing, who’d play Tool covers most of the night, but Maynard would still sing. Later, my real imaginary band called Hot Sick, who are a heavy metal thrash covers band, who play Paula Abdul songs…. only! What inspires you? I’m inspired by The Bub a lot, i like it here. I’m inspired by a lot of music, i have a very diverse musical pallet. I love vintage posters, 50s pin ups, the muppet show and sesame street, manga, movies with subtitles, the whole ritual of making a cup of tea, jpop, ethnic arts and cultures, things that remind me of my childhood, heavy metal thrash cover bands who play Paula Abdul songs…. What are you most proud of? I’m proud of identifying my passions. I love passion and really running with something I enjoy like some obsessive compulsive, “we must extract the information!” sort of thing. I LOVE what I do, and I’m so thankful that I can do it with the energy i put into it. Slowly but surely I’m being recognised for that, its a tough gig. I’m proud of surpassing my hair growing aspiration Lara Croft, and now have a new one, Nariko. Goggle her kids! ;) If you could time travel, where would you go, and what would you do? I’d prob go to Woodstock 1969 first, and not take the bad acid by the towers, I think that would be just amazing, I’m always quite memorised when I see footage of it. I was raised on all that music, so I feel a big connection to it. Also, back to the Edo Period in Japan, to really see the culture at it’s purist form, as it was… and then back some more to the height of the Mayan and Egyptian Civilisations, and then way into the future… lets see if Futurama is right! So the next ten years are going to be pretty big, huh? How so? Yeah, its going to be huge. I’ll become a mum, and manufactured crap~pop will still get released to the next generation. They’ll grow meat in test tubes, and we’ll get told about global cooling this time. Robots will do more stuff for us… i like stuff. I hope to be designing fabric for pyjamas or something like that, Peter Alexander is my hero. How did you find the bubble? What made you stay and, well… flourish? I found The Bub via ArtsHub, and joined a week or so after it officially became live. It was such a different community, and I think a few of us from “that time” look back on it with a bit of a twinkle in our eye. Yes I have flourished here (thank you) a great deal. What I think the appeal is you get to know why people like what you do, and you want to give the kids more. You find out what they like, and what they don’t, its all positive feedback and reinforcement, which we all fuel our machines on. Everyone seems to be on the same creative page, or at the very least in the same chapter. Also, i like to look back at what i’ve done, and see how i’ve evolved, its very important as an artist to do that. Thank you Jen! And come back next week for more shirty fun, folks. :o) Caanan. by RedBubble

Hello! So this morning we released another update to RedBubble. The first incarnation of groups h…

Hello! So this morning we released another update to RedBubble. The first incarnation of groups has gone out. We see groups as a very important step in the evolution of RedBubble. We’re a collection of some 15,000 members at the moment – all with different interests and importantly wanting different things from RedBubble. Groups will start to allow people to engage with RedBubble in a way that’s more specific to their interests. For example, I can see us having a landscape photography group, a digital art group, a Boston writers group et cetera. Pilgrim will post some more information about groups later today and you can see this FAQ for more information. We’ve also released an activity monitor e-mail – this e-mail provides a summary of events in your activity monitor, and you can configure your settings to receive this e-mail daily, weekly or never. You can edit the e-mail settings in mybubble->account->edit your profile. At this stage we’re looking to send out the first activity monitor e-mail on Monday. We’ve introduced a featured tab in art and clothing – this featured tab is hand populated (currently by Peter) and aims to give people another way to engage with the work on RedBubble (with a bit of a bias towards new RedBubblers). We’d like to involve more of the community in populating the featured gallery – so if your interested in curating please send Peter a BubbleMail. Our ‘preview’ suffix is no more. The preview suffix was there to let you all know that we’re brand new – so please go easy on us! Now we’re not so brand new (six months old). But still please go easy on us! We’ve got a long, long list of things to build and improve. We’re open to feedback (and act on the feedback) but things often take a while to build/change. What else … the Google Maps feature in profiles has been removed … and there’s a bunch of boring bug fixes and back end stuff that’s been released. Ciao for now, Peter
