I love it when birds fluff themselves up and look like little powder puffs! I seldom see the American goldfinches doing that so it was a treat to see this one ruffling its feathers on this sunny day in January that had a hint of spring in the air. Guess it was feeling fresh and frisky after the cold spell we just came out of. Here in Louisiana we enjoy the goldfinch’s presence only during the winter months. Its plumage is rather dull in comparison with its summer coat so when the bright yellow feathers start to appear, we know it’s time to say good-bye. They’ll be leaving us shortly thereafter.

This Kookaburra amused me for hours while I was out in the garden. He or she would hang around where I was digging in the garden and then land right next to me and stick his beak in the ground for worms. He or she would peck at the ground intensely to get that grub or worm.
Punked series … this would definately make a great ‘party invite/time/carnival’ card

A female Eastern bluebird is all puffed up and fluffy; looks like an old-fashioned powder puff in a lady’s boudoir! I took this photo on my patio. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, “The Eastern Bluebird is a small thrush with a big, rounded head, large eye, plump body, and alert posture. The wings are long, but the tail and legs are fairly short. The bill is short and straight. Male Eastern Bluebirds are vivid, deep blue above and rusty or brick-red on the throat and breast. Blue in birds always depends on the light, and males often look plain gray-brown from a distance. Females are grayish above with bluish wings and tail, and a subdued orange-brown breast. Eastern Bluebirds perch erect on wires, posts, and low branches in open country, scanning the ground for prey. They feed by dropping to the ground onto insects or, in fall and winter, by perching on fruiting trees to gulp down berries. Bluebirds commonly use nest boxes as well as old woodpecker holes. Eastern Bluebirds live in meadows and openings surrounded by trees that offer suitable nest holes. With the proliferation of nest boxes and bluebird trails, bluebirds are now a common sight along roads, field edges, golf courses, and other open areas.” Information above provided at the following address: / http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Eastern_Bluebird/id
I have no idea what these unusual plants are, but they remind me of gigantic dandelions when they have gone to seed. My sons call them wild sunflowers. Those elongated green pods in the background are the same kind but haven’t bloomed yet.
Taken at the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve / The Secretary bird is so named because of the crest of long feathers at the back of its head that resemble quill pens that 19th century clerks stuck in their wigs. The genus Sagittarius refers to the birds resemblance to an archer, and the species serpentarius refers to the fact that the bird preys on snakes. The Secretary bird is an unusual bird. Unlike the other birds of prey, the Secretary Bird has very long legs and tail feathers. Its plumage is light gray, except for the black wing tips, tail, and thighs. Its face is covered in red and yellow skin.
This male house finch was all puffed up and proud on a sunny morning in September. Makes a person happy about life to see something this cute and fluffy and perky.
The path of sorrow, and the path alone, / Leads to the land where sorrow is unknown. Words by William Cowper, 1764 This healing painting is dedicated to Nick, painted while attuned to Gill. There is also a message for you here…..Something is worrying you, churning around in your mind. Do this simple exercise. Write everything down on a piece of paper, writing a stream of consciousness without stopping to read what you have written. When you have expressed all your thoughts and there is nothing longer going around your mind, release those thoughts by burning the paper. Just let it all go. You are being told to lighten your load, and to consider how you can simplify your life and make it easier for yourself by having some fun and enjoying every moment. There is alot of positive energy around you. You have been placed on our healing list and we shall think of you daily. November, 29th 2009
