subject: This painting began as a self portrait, however the nose and mouth were wrong. I was overtired I suppose…haven’t been sleeping well lately. As I fought with it…another face began to emerge….a familiar face. Eventually I realised its the face of a friend I haven’t seen in almost 20 years. Why this face should bubble up out of my subconscious now, I have no idea. After visiting a fauvism exhibition at the NSW Art Gallery, I was inspired as I love colour and brightness. I then turned an ordinary sketch of my cat, into a colourful painting. I still have the painting, but unfortunately, not Misty.

The images portrayed are about my gratitude for the blessings in my life. / My creativity,great family close friends and the evolving spiritual journey of my life.These areas make up the fabric, the foundation of who i am and I love that it has the overall appearance of a wonderfully coloured quilt. I have portrayed myself naked and vulnerable in all my many colours ( emotions ). Directly behind me, etched into the azure sky, are simple leaves, my need fornature.Below me, etched in red pigment..depictions of friends and family, / purposefully under me,symbolising their emotional support,love and grounding. To my right is my creativeness,light and naively colourful….also imperfect. / In the bottom right corner depicted as a simple pink-leafed gold vine is my inner / world,spiritual and constantly evolving. / It is always there, in the corner, a graceful inner voice…guiding me through the maze of life. Les Fauves (French for The Wild Beasts) were a short-lived and loose grouping of early 20th century Modern artists whose works emphasized painterly qualities and strong colour over the representational values retained by Impressionism.
