Acrylic & Texture paste. This was so much fun to do. / Painted by Ciska Aug 2007 Grass Trees in Townsville This was a very popular piece, at my first exhibition. The Grass Trees actually look like they are dancing. Sold Original.
This t-shirt is another in my line of cards, prints, and clothing geared towards bringing increased awareness to the plight faced by the world’s flora and fauna. this t-shirt, based upon my series of frog, toad, and salamander photographs, depicts the green treefrog, common or Eastern toad, and spotted salamander. They have all been treated with a watercolor filter in photoshop for added depth and detail. The quote on the bottom of the shirt reads: “In the end we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught.” ~Baba Dioum, Senegalese ecologist. Because without these animals I would never be able to bring their beauty to you, I am going to pledge to donate 100% of all of my sales proceeds from cards and prints of the imagery in this series here on Redbubble to Wildlife Conservation Society

a close up of a large painting, with lots of butterflies. It’s the first time I’m done something very light-I wanted something with standout features and a vast expanse of white-but I need it to be lush, soft and velvet. I’ve done well with acrylics so far and tar gel…but oil paint may need to be called in!

A peacock that’s often found feeding on the soccer field at Blackbutt Reserve. It’s very used to Humans and if you are careful to slowly approach it you can get to with 3 or 4 feet of it and it won’t run away. Image As Is, straight from a Sony Cyber-Shot. I went over to this tree to take some photos of things on the ground around it. I looked up to see if there was anything that really caught my eye as a potential shot. As I looked across the branches I saw a Tawny Frogmouth just sitting right there and forgot about the tree altogether ! I got my first Tawny Frogmouth capture, ever ! They are not owls, but they are awake at night and sleep during the daytime. Unlike owls that hunt and catch prey using their claws, the Frogmouth catches it’s prey in it’s beak.
This cow came over to see what was going on when I started photographing the cattle, like some kind of Security Guard. This is part of the Organic Millham Farm at the Kooragang Wetlands Rehabilitation Project. The whole Island is being gradually restored to the natural state it was in before being used for Industry. Photograph taken using a 6 MP Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S500.
Honeyeater captures a view of one of these beautiful yet shy birds at the National Botanic Gardens in Canberra. Behind the scenes / Too many times, I’ve missed a great shot of birds like this one because of hesitation. I’ve waited, my finger poised on the shutter button for the perfect shot. To capture this image, I tried a different tactic, shooting many frames rapidly capturing the bird in a variety of poses. This was one of the successful shots, capturing the bird in a fantastic posture it held for only a split second. / Canon 1Ds mkIII | EF 100-400mm | 1.4x Extender Artwork / This is a striking image and an ideal addition to any decor. The subject creates a focal point while soft colours ensure it isn’t imposing. Take it home, to the office or share it as a gift! © 2009 A Spence. All Rights Reserved
Dragon is a close-up profile of a seemingly fierce (though in reality quite shy) Water Dragon at the National Botanic Gardens, Canberra. Behind the scenes / These creatures may look fierce but in reality are quite timid. And no, they don’t breath fire! They are quite agile creatures and accomplished swimmers, as this dragon demonstrated when it repeatedly leapt off the rocks into the water from some height. / Canon 1Ds mkIII | EF 100-400mm Artwork / A unique photograph with vivid colour and detail. Available as greeting cards, canvas and fine quality prints. © 2009 A Spence. All Rights Reserved
Two Ring-Necked Parakeets (psittacula krameri) seem to have sussed out that they’re my centre of attention. These guys live at Africa Alive in Suffolk, and despite being native to Africa/Asia, feral versions can be found living in the London/Surrey/Berkshire area of England (where I’ve seen them), and other European Cities. You can usually hear their noisy screeches before you see them. ;o) Canon EOS 5D MkII with Canon EOS 70-200mm L IS f/4 lens handheld
