Μοῖραι – the apportioners The Moirai, or Fates were: Klotho (Κλωθώ – spinner) spun the thread of life from her distaff onto her spindle. / Lachesis (Λάχεσις – allotter) measured the thread of life allotted to each person with her measuring rod. / Atropos (Ἄτροπος – inexorable) was the cutter of the thread of life. She chose the manner and timing of each person’s death. When she cut the thread with “her abhorrèd shears”, someone on Earth died. Photo reference by mare-wrath-stock / link / link / link
Taken with Canon 5Dmk2 with 70-200L 2.8 @f8 1/200 100ISO using studio light. Layered in Photoshop using diffuse glow and level adjustment. Model; Bianca Golsby, / Makeup; Fiona Horsley / Inspired by Aleci This was taken at the same shoot as the alternate “Lady luck”. Two different poses and a different emotion. I like this shot also – opinions, as always, are much appreciated.
this was a little test to see if I could design a tee by putting the pen to the paper (wacom) and not picking it back up till it was done… / this is what that became /
Watercolor and pencil on illustration board, / 10×8 / 2009 Model: Adhara Batul One of the Greek myths I adore the most, for its incredible strength, poetry and significance, is the myth of Persephone. In Greek mythology, Persephone was the goddess of the underworld and of the Spring growth. Daughter of Demeter, goddess of the harvest, she was abducted by Hades and taken to the land of the dead. By a determination of the Fates, she was forced to stay for two seasons each year after eating pomegranates seeds, thus becoming consort of Hades and queen of the underworld. This time I opted by depicting her sorrow and solitude after having the seeds, although there’s quite an air of resignation with her destiny.
Arianrhod .. the celtic goddess of the moon and stars .. also of Fate and the wheel of the year
My origami calendar The red string of fate is based on a Chinese myth that the gods tie an invisible red string around the ankles of men and women destined to be soulmates. This myth is has been adapted into other east asian cultures as well. I first became familiar with it by watching anime; though in those cases, one would attempt to match up couples by tying their fingers. This image, while on one hand based on that Chinese legend, is one that defines me. With the red thread forming the heart, I frame what is currently my greatest passion: miniature origami. I fold using tweezers, and sometimes with needles (I show a needle here, though for these hearts I only used tweezers as they are not that small). The hearts of paper and string, while representing my passion, also represent my soul, and how my fate is bound by the constraints of life. I’m in my own little world bound by a thread of fate; though my passion lies in a world of paper. While most women primarily use needles for sowing; I primarily use them for tiny origami :P I would adjust the position of the objects here with tweezers, and sometimes got magnetic reactions between the tweezers and the needle. They say opposites attrack… but they are both metal :] Each heart was folded from a 15×15mm piece of paper. Perdu – forgotten, out of sight, French The painting is about aging and lost beauty (not just physical beauty), which only continues to exist in our memories and thoughts. It has been inspired by the three fates from Norse mythology: Wyrd, Skuld and Verdandi. Their Roman equivalents are the Parcea: Nona, Decima and Morta. In Greek mythology they are know as the Moirae: Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. All three mythologies agree that one of the three fates would spin the thread, the other would measure it and the last one would cut it, measuring out the fates. The two birds are Odin’s ravens, Memory and Thought. The tree necklace pendant is meant to represent Yggdrasil – the world ash of Norse mythology. The spindle, a tape measure with a Greek reference (alpha for the beginning of a life and omega for the ending of a life) and the scissors used to cut the thread. The scissors are based on a design from the T’ang dynasty. Although not that many people still know much about the three fates, I’ve always been fascinated by them and some authors are too: Stephen King’s Insomnia and Robin Jarvis’ Wyrd Museum trilogy. I am sure there are others. The patterns used on the wallpaper and the camisole are created by me. The leaves are my own photographs edited and used to frame the image.
