Last weekend I spent one day roaming the city doing some fashion shots. Straight fashion is not my usual style, so I appreciated the test shoot to try out some ideas. Anyway, here is some of what I came up with. As you can tell, I’m still playing with ideas and developing the right skills for this genre of photography but it lots of fun! If anyone else wants to model for me in their favorite outfits so I can practice on you drop me a line Many thanks to all the models, MUAs and photographers involved / Simon Liberta: www.redbubble.com/people/liberta / Dave Aarons: www.redbubble.com/people/daveaarons / Bronwen Hyde: www.bronwenhyde.com/ / James Price: www.vividphotogrpahy.net / Jo O’Brien: www.joobrien.com.au / Stephen Michell: www.ezcreate.com.au / Louise: http://www.fashionising.com/models/portfolio/n/Louise/m/7482/ / Chenai: www.modelmayhem.com/chenai / Eugenia: http://www.starnow.com/eugeniaaverina / Praveen: http://www.fashionising.com/profile.php?profile=16296 / Sonia: http://www.fashionising.com/profile.php?profile=16615 / Elise: www.redbubble.com/people/elisel / Kelli – www.fashionising.com/photos.php?member=16103

I’m starting to feel guilty that all my posts seem to be Melbourne things but until they give me a bubblecopter I’m afraid you’ll just have to blatantly rip off this idea and do it where you live… Anyways, I’m looking for t-shirt people in Melbourne who already have one/some of their designs hanging in the wardrobe and who would like to have them included in a professional fashion shoot. Models, styling, lights, photographers etc. will be provided. This isn’t a ‘redbubble admin’ thing, it’s a ‘Jo has too much time on her hands’ thing. But if everyone involved is cool with the idea, I think it’d be ace to use the shots for all sorts of t-shirt love around the place – blogs, journals, t-shirt descriptions etc. If you’re interested drop me a link to which shirts you have sitting around waiting to go (in what style, colour & size) and I’ll start putting this together to look all pretty and stuff. And if you want to model your own t-shirts, that’s one less person I have to organise so you are totally welcome to!

We recently did a test shoot for Maria Gonzales and Rogue Artists With very bad rain forecast, we abandoned our location scouting and set about using any available space in her store, including the tea room, out the back and yes, even in the toilet. James was set up in the main shop room with studio lights so hopefully we got a mix of my random roaming around and some nice clear polished shots. I haven’t even made it half way through my shots yet, but here are a few if you’re interested.

  • What is Lolita Fashion?

Hello my Lovely Lolita Enthusiasts (If your not, then you will be by the time I’m through! :P) I thought I would make a journal with artistic inspiration this morning as to what the Lolita Subculture is all about. :P The term “Lolita” may be off-putting to those who first hear about the fashion because of the connotation it holds from Vladimir Nabokov’s novel, “Lolita”, which changed the meaning of the name for most people in the Western world. It is generally assumed though that the name of the fashion comes from a distortion of the meaning while word-borrowing from English. In the case of the fashion the term “Lolita” only refers to the child-like nature of some of the clothes and is also used because of the beauty or cuteness of the name. Lolita Fashion is emphatically not about looking sexy and is instead about looking cute or elegant. Lolita comes in several different types, but the most common styles are Punk Lolita, Goth Lolita, Sweet Lolita and Classic Lolita All of which have ribbons and frills, but they different in colors and styles. :D Lolita fashion is a style of dress orginated in Japan. Although “Lolita” is a reference to Vladimir Nabokov’s famous novel, and Lolita is often worn by teens, most adherents present themselves as Victorian children or baby dolls and prefer to look “cute” rather than “sexy”. Japanese culture places a higher value upon extremely youthful appearance and behavior than Western, and some adult women buy large amounts of products, such as Hello Kitty goods, that are typically marketed only to children in the West. Lolita fashion is perhaps a more visible extension of this phenomenon. In general, Lolita fashion tends to imitate Victorian-style girl’s clothing and often aims to imitate the look of Victorian porcelain dolls. Skirts are knee length and may have a crinoline or petticoat to add volume. As in mainstream Japanese fashion, over-knee socks or stockings are extremely popular. Black fishnet stockings and white or black tights are also common. Shoes or boots with high heels – though not usually stiletto heels – such as Mary Janes, complete the look. Frilly, ruffled or lace-trimmed Victorian blouses are also popular especially with “Gothic Lolita” types, who may also favour long skirts and jackets rather than overtly “childish” designs. Apart from the occasional shortness of skirts, designs are usually modest, sometimes with long lace-capped sleeves. Lace headdress and bracelets are usually worn. Gothic Lolita: / Gothic Lolita or “GothLoli” (ゴスロリ, gosurori; sometimes alternatively “Loli-Goth”) is a youth fashion among Japanese teenagers and young women. It emphasizes Victorian-style girl’s clothing and often aims to imitate the look of Victorian porcelain dolls. Gothloli’s name and origin is a combination of lolita fashion—appearing deliberately cute to the point of looking childish—and certain styles found within gothic fashion. / / / Punk Lolita: / Gothic Punk has a rock-inspired look. It usually features tartans, stripes, chains, piercings, and an overall more industrial look. Lolita punk is similar, but with a lolita twist. Lolita punk keeps the lolita bell skirt, but is less feminine and keep the elements of punk. / / / Sweet Lolita: / They have lots of lace and ribbons, usually light-colored (although there are black/white sweet lolita), attempting to look as cute and little-girlish as possible. End results typically exudes a doll like appearance. / Classic Lolita: / They are more traditional, look more like the Victorian fashion, light-coloured, also more mature-looking. Traditional Maid-style clothing and Alice in Wonderland-style apron may be classified into this genre. / / / Some Other Styles: Kimono Lolita: As the name suggest, they are crossover of Kimono and lace-featured skirt. / / Country Lolita: A style of Lolita with a Country touch. Fabrics are usually gingham or soft floral prints. Aprons are common, as well as small straw hats and other “country” accessories. / Shiro/Kuro Lolita: Shiro (“white”) Loli are lolita who wear all white, while Kuro (“black”) Loli are lolita who wear all black. Almost all brands carry items in this style. There are also lolita who wear only blue, pink, red, and so on. Each of these lolita is named after the color they chose. These Images and descriptions are not the property of myself, they belong to their respective owners. / References: / http://jerinae.multiply.com/journal/item/22 / http://www.lolitafashion.org/what_is_lolita.php / Google images

The absolutely stunning Danielle Prowse just posted a journal about Tee Cutting. This strange sounding concept is actually a way to make ulta creative fashionista features for your RedBubble t-shirts using nothing but a sharp pair of scissors. How great does it look!? So I thought I’d give it a go. When I ran up stairs to show the guys they mostly laughed, but I think in the good way. Perhaps cut and paste isn’t in my skill set quite yet, but I’m really liking where this is going. Making art out of art.

An overnight low of 8 degrees celsius wasn’t going to stop me from bribing two models, a stylist and a second photographer freeze their tits off for the sake of art. Extra love goes to the models who braved the elements in skimpy dresses and sheer camisoles – I promise next time we will be indoors and with the heater on full! I tend to use RedBubble for showing my art photography, but I seem to be shooting a lot of fashiony stuff lately so thought I’d share a bit of what I’ve been up to. You can see some more here and here if you’re keen

  • Lighting The Head Shot

“If God had intended photographers to use more than one key light, he would have made more suns.” Just about every single shot including the food and still life shots in my portfolio was made with one light. One light in the right place. You won’t need any more except possibly to light a background. In this case make sure that they light the background, and do not spill back on to the subject. Use barn doors or large black sheets of card if necessary. Very early in my career I learnt that light bounces around all over the place in a white studio. This is unwanted light. When I worked for top food photographers and fashion photographers like Barry Lategan, we actually blacked out the studio with drapes or black screens. Great for glassware too. I ordered funeral drapes to cover an entire studio when I was asked to light a “Finish” (the dishwasher stuff) TV commercial in Milan. The essential shot was of a glass. How do you get a glass to look sparkling clean? Answer, outline it in black, make it totally transparent and have one clean reflection of light on it. How do you do that? Black out the studio; this creates the black edges which are the walls reflecting in the edges of the glass. Use one ‘window’ type light. In this instance I used a 6×4 sheet of opaque white Perspex and stuck some halogen floods behind it. Result – one clean reflection of soft light, no glass to be seen, just the black outline of one. It looks as clean as a whistle because the glass is invisible! The actor doing the demo in the commercial looked good too, with a similar lighting quality to that in my stills. The cameramen were two old hacks from Rome who scoffed in bemused wonderment at this 22 year old kid who had made the studio look set for a funeral. The drapes were all that the three funeral companies could provide. However, the results were crystal, the client was thrilled, I was a hero for a day, and I got more work from the production company who shot the ad. This lighting style was often copied after that, and is still the basis of many British commercials today. So where were we? Yes one light. One light in the right place. At John Cowan’s studio, I persuaded John to have the entire walls of the studio painted black to which he agreed. Why black? So that the light does not bounce all over the room filling in shadows where you want shadows. To start with black and then paint with light gives you much more control over your lighting. It makes you the master of it. It gives you the contrast you want without having to print on grade 4 paper, thus allowing more detail in mid tones. I painted my studio in Milan black, and would do the same today. It gives you a quality that is sharp and precise. OK so where does the One Light go? More or less above your own head and slightly above the subject. This will slim the face by putting the cheekbones in shadow if the model is facing you head on. Take a look at the head shots in my portfolio and look where the shadows are. Then figure out where the light is. Above the camera, maybe slightly to one side. This should be the side the model faces if the shot is three quarters on or the shoulders are three quarters on. When you have set up, always use a tripod to establish your camera position and then adjust the light until it is exactly where you want it. Don’t run around the model with your camera in hand. It may look good in the movies, but it will look crap in your contacts, with no consistent lighting whatsoever. Just one more thing, what sort of light you may ask? The light should be intense but soft, so a single umbrella is fine, a soft box is fine, and a bowl light is excellent. This is where the flash head is reflected into a shallow bowl and the head is shielded. If the bowl is then opaqued by a thin sheet of plastic, you will get the same quality as some of the Vogue photographers. It is a very flattering light. You can tell when it has been used by top photographers. You will see the circular highlight with a black center reflected in the model’s eyes. OK folks so that’s how I light head shots (and many of the top guys I have assisted). Give it a whirl and see if you can take some shots that stun you, the girl you are shooting, and the horse I rode in on. ‘til next time – John

Wow, I’m overwhelmed. I just had a meeting with the Promotions Manager of Myer and she has accepted me to be one of three official photographers for the Perth Fashion Festival! AHHHHH I am ecstatic right now! Anyway, how did I land with this position you (and 20 of my friends last night) had asked? I shot Stephanie’s 21st Event back in July 2009 and because she works part-time so naturally a lot of her Myer colleagues attended her Birthday. Melissa the promotions manager must have seen this on her front page feed, and by that time she must have been looking for a 3rd photographer already. She loved the way I approached my photography and decided to give me a call! It was as simple as that. I have Stephanie and Facebook to thank for haha! Here’s the front cover of her event: Feel free to browse through my Facebook page, I have a Keegan Wong Photography page as well! Just search it on the textbar =) Anyway, thanks for listening to one of my rants again. This rant, however, is a little special ;) Keep shooting guys! / Keegan

I’d like to take you behind the curtain and show you a member of redbubble that I don’t think many people have met yet or know of gottheshot / ....... / Although gottheshot has had a few features in groups, he’s never been featured on the Home Page, and yet he captures the most fabulous images and I really thought it’s a crime that his fabulous art is not being seen by more of us. / ....... His candid shots of people on the street, in parks, in Harajuku during his time in Japan are some of the most beautiful and poignant works I’ve seen in my travels and I’m really taken with them, you can tell he loves his subjects very much… I love talking to him about how he sees things and he explains so well, the thought process he goes through as he ponders how he’ll shoot a particular subject… it’s so very interesting, rewarding and revealing. I love his black and white photography, there is something just wonderful about it, that I can’t quite put into words…it’s elemental beauty at it’s best….but then you see the colour version and my mind is exploding with details and delighted by everything i see… there is one image in particular which i find “postcard-a-licious” called Caught in Kyoto which is the Geisha with the red umbrella and kimono below standing to the side, revealing white cherry blossom tree in full bloom… something so special about it, almost like selective colouring, but it isn’t. / ........ / gottheshot says and I quote: A boring 9-5 job keeps me away from the love of photography for most of the time but weekends and holidays are a chance to learn my new found hobby / again. I enjoyed trying to capture street photography in Japan and more recently just photographing landmarks in London. In the last couple of months my weekend hobby has been flower photography and bees in flight.. A very steep learning curve. I still find that I choose the wrong aperture or the wrong setting and lose the goal that I want out of a photo – practise makes perfect. With a bit of editing my photos are presentable enough to go on here. / ...... / I don’t want to give away all gottheshot’s surprises here in my journal, so why don’t you head on over and say hi to him, pop him on your watchlist and check out his beautiful inspirational works…another friend to befriend…a new person to inspire and be inspired by… It was actually Open Wide pictured below, that first caught my attention and as I continued to enjoy I came across gottheshots diverse range wonderful images /
