Last weekend I spent one day roaming the city doing some fashion shots. Straight fashion is not my usual style, so I appreciated the test shoot to try out some ideas. Anyway, here is some of what I came up with. As you can tell, I’m still playing with ideas and developing the right skills for this genre of photography but it lots of fun! If anyone else wants to model for me in their favorite outfits so I can practice on you drop me a line Many thanks to all the models, MUAs and photographers involved / Simon Liberta: www.redbubble.com/people/liberta / Dave Aarons: www.redbubble.com/people/daveaarons / Bronwen Hyde: www.bronwenhyde.com/ / James Price: www.vividphotogrpahy.net / Jo O’Brien: www.joobrien.com.au / Stephen Michell: www.ezcreate.com.au / Louise: http://www.fashionising.com/models/portfolio/n/Louise/m/7482/ / Chenai: www.modelmayhem.com/chenai / Eugenia: http://www.starnow.com/eugeniaaverina / Praveen: http://www.fashionising.com/profile.php?profile=16296 / Sonia: http://www.fashionising.com/profile.php?profile=16615 / Elise: www.redbubble.com/people/elisel / Kelli – www.fashionising.com/photos.php?member=16103

  • Attention T-Shirt People in Melbourne

I’m starting to feel guilty that all my posts seem to be Melbourne things but until they give me a bubblecopter I’m afraid you’ll just have to blatantly rip off this idea and do it where you live… Anyways, I’m looking for t-shirt people in Melbourne who already have one/some of their designs hanging in the wardrobe and who would like to have them included in a professional fashion shoot. Models, styling, lights, photographers etc. will be provided. This isn’t a ‘redbubble admin’ thing, it’s a ‘Jo has too much time on her hands’ thing. But if everyone involved is cool with the idea, I think it’d be ace to use the shots for all sorts of t-shirt love around the place – blogs, journals, t-shirt descriptions etc. If you’re interested drop me a link to which shirts you have sitting around waiting to go (in what style, colour & size) and I’ll start putting this together to look all pretty and stuff. And if you want to model your own t-shirts, that’s one less person I have to organise so you are totally welcome to!

  • Jo O'Brien - the singing parrot
    by Darren Stones

By Darren Stones – Freelance Photojournalist / Subscribe via RSS/Atom Singing like a parrot whilst wearing a gold dress in the shower, may be the road to super-stardom for zany RedBubble member, Jo O’Brien. DS. Is that your real hair colour? JO’B. Yes, it absolutely is. When I was in Year 9 (and I had coloured my hair to death), I shaved it all off No. 1 style and started to grow it all back. Since then, I have learned to leave my hair alone. DS. What shampoo do you use? JO’B. I get different shampoo all the time based on what is on special (oh the bargain hunter emerges!) At the moment it’s… um…. a purple bottle of some variety. DS. Does your bathroom have an IXL Tastic 3-In-1 light? JO’B. No. I jump out shivering in the cold air. I don’t even have a heater in my bathroom. It’s getting a bit desperate. DS. Do you wash the dishes in the shower? JO’B. I have occasionally washed my coffee cup in there when the kitchen sink looked like a five-armed monster. I was too scared of what I might find in there if I started moving dishes to make room. But not as a regular thing. I should probably start doing this as a water saving effort. DS. Are you a ‘Wally with water’, or do you shower in less than three minutes? JO’B. I’m generally good, but you may have noticed I have a hell of a lot of hair so occasionally I slip up. I do also have a tendency to have baths, because they are so relaxing and I’m a work-a-holic stress head. DS. Does your bathroom sink tap drip at a rate of one litre per hour? JO’B. Thankfully no, I turn it off nice and tight. Dripping taps drive me insane. DS. Does your bathroom window sill have 12 bottles of perfume on it? JO’B. I have two bottles of perfume, one inherited and one was a present. I love perfume, but it’s not the kind of thing I’d go out and buy myself. Actually, my window sill has nothing on it at the moment – I had a party here recently and therefore cleaned up. DS. Do you think this photograph will catapult you to national stardom? JO’B. I am certain it will. I’ve already doubled the locks on my house for when the media starts hounding me, and never leave the house without giant celebrity style sunglasses. I’m still working on losing 75% of my body weight though. DS. Are you a better singer than Australia’s singing budgie Kylie Minogue? JO’B. I go for more of a ‘parrot’ sound in my singing. Kylie does the ‘budgie’ thing. It’s really like comparing apples to oranges. We’re both good at our chosen style. DS. Do you watch Big Brother? JO’B. Yes. Now just pretend you didn’t hear that and move on.

I have been thinking for a while about my realism work. And I’m not sure. I haven’t done a realism artwork in a while – just now I have sat down to get one underway in my usual fashion and it’s not doing it for me anymore. I think I have moved beyond it. I’m feeling like I want to branch out, perhaps my style is starting to break through. I still want to indulge my ideas using drawing, but I have a desire to take it to a more evolved form. So I guess what I am saying is watch this space.

  • Oh.. What to wear??

As I take a short break from the never-ending flow of email I must trudge through here at work, I have been thinking about what I should …

As I take a short break from the never-ending flow of email I must trudge through here at work, I have been thinking about what I should wear to our school’s career expo next month. November 5th and 6th ERAU is having their Career & Industry Expo. I need to go this time because I have to get an internship this next summer. I met with one of my Homeland Security professor’s yesterday who was extremely helpful. Ultimately when I graduate, I want to get a job with Customs & Border Patrol (CBP). I’m still not sure what sector I want to work but it really appeals to me because I would enjoy working the border as a horse patrol agent, or working at an airport (if I had to lol I’d rather be outside), a canine unit officer, or working a port looking at containers that could contain haz mat, drugs or human traffic. The opportunities are endless. Plus, a few years there and I could go anywhere. I was told by my professor, however, that if I want a job going in that’s a little higher up than other entry-levels, I should try for an internship. CBP will be at the career expo, along with the FBI, CIA, FAA, and a few airlines and airplane manufacturers, and of course various military intelligence agencies that hire civilians. I obviously want to dress to impress. Too many students go over to these expos just wearing whatever they’re wearing to their classes. I WANT this CBP internship, and although it’s not a formal interview and the representatives there may have no authority to recommend me for the internship, it doesn’t hurt to look good. For those of you who only know me through my artwork, I really don’t have any pictures up here that show how I look. I’m a short 5’ tall, shoulder length dark blond hair and blue-ish/hazel eyes. I’m not skinny, not really fat either although I am trying to work off some unwanted college-food induced pounds and could trim up a bit. Because of that I don’t want to buy anything too expensive because it’ll hang on me after I finally shed this excess weight. Also, I live in Florida. And although it will be November for the expo, don’t be fooled. It could very well be 80 degrees (farenheit) here in November with full humidity. What is the most professional thing I could wear? I know I will need a suit. But what is more impressive/flattering and might give me the appearance of being taller? I have plenty of pairs of those capri-length dress pants but I don’t want to wear those because I’ve never though of them as actually professional looking. Would a pencil skirt make me look taller or just make my hips look wider? Or should I wear pants? With the shirt, can I get away with something that’s lower cut? Obviously nothing obsene, I wouldn’t dare do that, but something flattering and fits a little more comfortably under a jacket than a collared, button up shirt? I still want to look feminine. Also, what colors should I go for that will present me well? I’ve been debating between black, navy blue, a chocolate brown, or a darker heather grey. lol. I know it’s a little different than photography advice, but I figure I know more people on Redbubble who are a little older and wiser than I am, who have probably been to job interviews, etc, and would have a better idea than my fellow college students. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :-D Thank you everyone! ♥ Torrie

The new Summer Issue of Ottawa Life Magazine is out, and I’m all over this issue! / First we got the front cover. No surprise here that I teamed up with Alexandra Rodionova for this amazing shot. We came up with a great idea at the last moment. I love it when that happens. The Magazine also used another one of the cover shots for the main article, which I personally think is better than the cover shot. Then there is the two full page spread I shot at Hotel Indigo with Alex and Christiana, make-up by Erin Heather. This was a crazy shoot. Twelve hours! This shoot is going down as one of the hardest shoots I’ve done. / There are just some things you don’t expect to have problems with. Everything was great and wonderful till the exact moment we started shooting. Then everything goes wrong. / The lights didn’t work properly, the location starting having problems, outfit problems. The list goes on and on. But as usual we pulled together and prevailed! / I originally wasn’t sure what I was going to get from this shoot, but as time went on, as I was working on the pictures, I started to see the greatness of what a small group of determined people can do. / To view the entire set, plus the unpublished pictures, click on the link below. / http://www.flickr.com/photos/jefharris/sets/72157601121278550/
