  • One of my all-time favourite photographs, this rusting yellow iron wheel continues to support the retired tractor in this Australian farmyard. , , , , , , , , , , , , , , All artwork is copyright© to Stephen Mitchell, All Rights Reserved. / You may not use, replicate, manipulate, redistribute, or modify this image without my express consent.

  • Despite it’s many years of use, this contraption still stands out in the field, its paint matching nothing in its organic surroundings. Also interesting is the farmers-ingenuity for a chute handle, a simple hand-lever that a farm-hand walking alongside can operate to open and close the seeder. • This rusted three-wheeled pedal-toy was found amongst a pile of of metal-rubbish on the top paddock near my FIL’s hay-shed. Amongst other oddities in the heap, I dragged this rusted bike out – watching for snakes – and brought it back to life with a series of shots. • Rusted from the outside inward, these iron wheels once helped the chains and belts move around inside this massive machine. Why so much, so big, so many cogs? Careful scrutiny of all sides of this photographic wonder has me believing that the moving parts inside this retired beast helped turn the combination of an Cultivator, Seeder and Auger. After giving life to the land, the rusted remains sit retired beneath the dead-gums. • Rural photography shows an old work horse which has been put out to pasture in its golden years. Farm equipment like this old tractor are reminders of the bygone era of the independent American farmers. Awarded Best In Show / 2007 Macon County Historical Museum Art & Photography Show

  • Just another old Farm Worker….... / Spot of hdr and all…..... HDR: Hand held, single RAW image, 2 more images created 2 stops up and 2 stops down and combined and edited with photomatix, finishing touches with Photoshop 7. Some Links to My Pics:

  • I have been looking for an old farm tractor to photograph so I drove a few of the backroads this afternoon and although I didn’t come across a tractor I did come across this old machine. I love these old antiques… imagine the stories they would be able to tell. / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / /

  • Not sure what this piece of machinery does, but it looked interesting, along with masses of other rusting pieces of equipment along the side of the road. / Landscapes Trees Cards EOD Rusty Flowers Architecture Macro CatchAll DM

  • Location: Elk Grove, California / Technique: HDR Layering Been favoring my 17-40 Wide lately for all my HDR shots. The final image consisted of 17 different stops. Featured in Group: / “Rustic” – Dec/2008

  • This old tree has suffered the ravages of time and nature out in the open of one of the back paddocks of the Charlemont farm property.

  • An ant’s eye view of an old, rusty disc plough, sitting behind the old stables at sunset on the Charlemont farm.

  • I saw this pile of old tires in a paddock, with one rusted/red rim the only bright spot. A local farmer uses the tires to keep a plastic tarp in place but I have no idea what he is covering. And how many tractors and trucks did he go through to get all those tires? Shot near Monticello, Florida. /

  • Image of an old caster from a Papec Machine, dating back to about 1923. These machines served on farms as ensilage cutters and were produced in Shortsville, NY. Light HDR processing applied to pull out some of the texture in the rust. /

  • Digital photography and collage with haiku. / Original photograph was taken near Abels’ Bay in Southern Tasmania, Australia.

  • The Tragic History Behind The Shots Of The Old Farmhouse...

Over this past summer I have been infatuated with a run down farmhouse. It’s condition left much to the imagination. The old farmhouse is about a 2 hour drive from my house and whenever the opportunity arose to photograph it… I came running. I had the opportunity to photograph it 3 times this summer. / / Every time I see the old house my imagination gets going. I took all these images before I knew of its history. / / Well I finally got some confirmation on its history. / / So here it is: / / Originally I thought the history of this house belonged to another house fairly close to this one…. but I was wrong. This old farmhouse used to house a family of 4. The husband had been away for some time (working) and when he had returned home he found his wife in bed with another. His wife ended up taking the children and leaving him. It wasn’t long after this that the husband when downstairs and shot & killed himself. The house had since been boarded up and left to the elements. It is in a very small community so no one wanted to live in the house after the tragic events. / / It is a very tragic story and it just got me thinking that so often we come across these finds and to us they are just great images that stir our imaginations but to some they are tragic memories. I wonder how many more of our shots hold a story. I will not return to this old homestead… somehow it just wouldn’t feel right, now that I know its sad story. / / Here are the images I took of the Farmhouse… / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • I drive by this windmill almost every day, twice a day, on my 40 mile commute to work in southwest Iowa. I kept waiting for the background and the lighting to be just right. I think today was it. This had some post processing in Photoshop. A little tweak to the color and contrast, but this is pretty much what I saw today with the setting sun hitting the blades of the windmill and bare cornfield. / Canon EOS 10D / EF-S 18-55 / 1/80 at f16 / ISO 200

  • I PASS THIS DESERTED FARMHOUSE ABOUT ONCE A MONTH AND NEVER SEEM TO HAVE THE TIME TO STOP AND GET SOME IMAGES. TODAY I MADE A SPECIAL TRIP. I DON’Y KNOW THE STORY BEHIND IT OR, REALLY, EVEN HOW OLD IT IS, IT JUST LOOKS LIKE IT WAS QUITE A NICE HOME BEFORE IT FELL INTO DISREPAIR

  • *For Affordable Canvas Prints please                    click here FEATURED in First Things April ‘09 with thanks I found this wonderful old croft house on Achill Island (pronounced /ˈækəl/; Irish: Acaill, Oileán Acla) in County Mayo. This is the largest island of Ireland, and is situated off the west coast. It has a population of 2,700. Its area is 148 km² (57 mi²). It’s gorgeous. It is believed that at the end of the Neolithic Period (around 4000 BCE), Achill had a population of 500–1,000 people. Mostly forested until the Neolithic people began crop cultivation; settlement increased during the Iron Age, and the dispersal of small forts around the coast indicate the warlike nature of the times. Today the economy of the island is largely dependent on tourism; agriculture plays a small role and is only profitable because of European Union subsidies. As the island is mostly bog agriculture is limited largely to sheep farming. / Canon EOS 400D 18-55mm lens.

  • I was driving through the countryside, when I spotted this old barn. I thought the sky had an interesting pattern or coloration, and would accent the barn nicly. Even though the barn has seen its better days, it is still being used by the farmer. The photo was taken in Page County, Virginia. I did apply a slight curves adjustment in Photoshop CS3 to enhance midtone exposure. This is my second attempt at textures. /

  • The rusting remains of an old hay cutting, chaff machine spends its retirement in a display of vintage farm machinery outside a museum in Flagstaff, Arizona.
