Sometimes faeries take humans away to beautiful, magical places but sometimes, the places they take us are dark and not so beautiful. This was done for a project themed “Fear’s Playground.” It’s based on a nightmare I had a few years ago where this malevolent nixie was terrorizing a small town and killing off young men. The dream started with her drowning a surfer so that’s the scene I illustrated here. It was actually a rather terrifying dream—I guess because I have such a strong fear of drowning.

Perhaps it is meant to be a cautionary tale of how some things should not be meddled with or consequently – the importance of following directions. / I like to think however, that she represents the endless inquisitive spirit of humankind and that with every innovation and step forward , there can be negative consequences unleashed. However, in order for us to evolve and grow as human beings – we must face our inner demons and banish them…Only then can we truly evolve… and of course, the last words of the tale are: / “And then there was Hope!”

From a photograph of a real White Raven (aka “Spirit Raven” born in May 2008 on Vancouver Island with an identical sibling), this fantasy scene was born. “Keeper of Worlds” represents the powerful status of “Raven” in our various cultures and societies. He is a protector of home and worker of natural magic. If anyone was assigned to “manage” our Solar System, Raven would be up for the task, having proven himself in mythologies, stories and dreams. NB: Note the planet Earth in his beak. 25% from sales proceeds are donated to I.F.A.W. I finally got inspired to finish her. I made her a lot bigger than the others in the series, so that should appease her for me taking so long on her. / She is the Spirit of the North Wind. It is the wind of Winter and of death, but also of rebirth. She gives us the wisdom to overcome death and to know it is not the end. We must walk through the Northern gate at the end of this life and she will be the one to usher us through. 2009. Age 22 -Drawn on white smooth bristol board. 2H, 3B pencil, black biro pen, water colours and digital paint. This was originally designed as a Tattoo for a friend with the addition of a fallen angel… yet I personally felt the image was more powerful portraying the frailty of a human soul :-) Please note: I am sorry for deleting previous ‘Redemption’ artwork, thus deleting kind comments left by you lovely people… I promise it won’t happen again :-)
