Nearby Peel Forest Park is a beautiful and well known forest of native bush and is a protected area full of bird life. / This fantail does not look happy to see me but I think it’s more a case of catching him in a bad pose because they normally look way friendlier than this little chap! / In short erratic flights they will flit a few feet from your face, tails extended in their fan shape, catching insects as they fly….they almost seem to flirt with you. / They can also be found in home gardens and other man made environments…wherever there are trees and shrubs. They are delightful little birds. / / /
Rhipidura rufifrons We climbed up a gully prior to nightfall and as the sun was going down groups of birds were coming into drink at little depressions left in the rock.
Wendy took this out the big window this morning- I’ve made a bird-watcher out of her. She was already a photographer! She didn’t see a second dove- maybe the back yard has turned into a Singles (water) bar? CASIO Exilim, 7.something pixels/in / Nothin has been done to photo except trimming to bring out bird.
Shot near the construction of the new Pier, North Bay at Kaikoura on New Zealand’s South Island. i love this effect, get real close in with a wide angle when a wave is drawing back and you get this wonderful perspective, but be warned, you need to get wet to be close enough. Shot on a Nikon D700 with 17-35mm lens, with Cokin ND4 grad filter.

An iconic New Zealand bird. Watercolour and black pen on paper.
Was out walking for 2 hours this morning in a local bush reserve when this little bird came down to visit me. They seem very curious about people, but in actual fact, they swoop in to feed on the insects and small flying critters that we disturb as we walk. They never seem to be afraid of us. However, these birds flutter around in every single direction at the speed of light, and it’s extremely hard to get one 100% perfect, so I was pleased with this. Particularly that is wings look transparent.
