  • The original Dunbrody was a three-masted barque built in Quebec, Canada, for the Graves family of New Ross, Co. Wexford in 1845. She carried many emigrants to the new world from 1845-1870. / The Dunbrody Project involves the construction of a full scale sea-going replica. The Dunbrody was finished in early 2001 and has been opened to visitors since 1st May 2001 at the quayside in New Ross.

  • Yes this is Toronto. This shot was taken from the grounds of the Irish monument that stands behind the old Canada Malting Building. The actual monument and the statues are quite a thing to see. Very heartbreaking. This and other statues of starving people and the Monument are to commemorate the Irish Potato Famine.

The root of the village’s name is uncertain, it comes either from ‘Muir Riasc’ which translates as ‘a marsh by the sea’ or the more romantic “Muir Iasc’, the sea monster worshipped in pagan times. One and a half million people died between 1846 and 1850 in the famine in Ireland caused by potato blight which all but destroyed the main food source of the time. / The Irish Hunger Memorial garden is a monument to those who perished during the great hunger, and is a symbol to highlight areas of the world affected by hunger today.
