This and last year, my routine is to get a new painting started approximately every second or third week. So I can take it to Hazelhurst where Melissa can then advise me to put more green on the skin (and adjust the proportions). / / Roughly on the weekends I start to think about what I’d like to paint next. It’s like having a store-room or chamber, in the back of my head where certain subjects are sitting, leaning, standing, gathering dust, waiting to be picked. / Somewhere I read about favourite illustrations. / It could easily have been on RedBubble (Information overload!) It might have been BookCrossing! / My favourite illustration of all is Remi, standing outside the courthouse, after Vitalis has been put in gaol. (It’s by G. van Raemdonck, in the 1940 edition of the Dutch Version of Sans Famille, by Hector Malot .) / / So, now the urge to copy that illustration and ‘dress’ Remi in the colours that I think are appropriate, has surfaced and I shall be taking this ‘work’, to work on, in about an hour, to Hazelhurst. / Having the painting will, for me combine several pleasant memories. / I.e., my mother reading that book to me several times, when I was far too young – so she first left out all the very sad bits – and, in 2005, walking along the Seine, with my Sydney-born daughter, asking the people, minding the second-hand book stalls there, if they had the book, in its original French. / The fun of watching my daughter communicate with these interesting people, so easily, in French and particularly the exchange with the book-seller who advised against buying it because, as a boy, he’d seen the black and white film (I saw that here many years ago, on Sydney t.v., too!) / He said my daughter would cry too, if she read it. / But she did buy it. Not only that but also the second book, which I’d forgotten about. / Several of the booksellers pointed to a street, across the Seine to where Hector Malot used to live. / My other connection with the book, is memories of Mr John Fredericks, our French Teacher, at Maroubra Bay High School (Heartbreak High), unkindly known as’Freddy the Frog by the students, mentioning the book to another Dutch-born boy and me. / Hans and I were pleased about that because our generation (roughly baby-boomers) grew up with that book, in the Netherlands, the way English reading boys grew up with Biggles, Treasure Island, Rip Van Winkle, Oliver Twist, ....... I need to get ready….... .......5 hours later…... Back home again.
.....” another judge spoke for a few minutes, after which the president announced in a serious voice, that the a-fore-named Vitalis was sentenced to two months’ detention, in gaol, and one hundred francs in fines. / Through my tears I saw Vitalis leave the room. Two long months! Where could I go? ” / ** / Nothing’s changed! / When I was about 7 or 8, I felt tempted to add colour to the illustrations, by G. van Raemdonck , in the book: “Alleen op de Wereld” (Alone in the world), the Dutch translation of Sans Famille and now, more than half a century later, I’ve been doing the same. / In the 50’s with coloured pencils. In 2007, with oil paint. / * / (There *is a modern interpretation of the story. But I’d rather not know about it. View here! / More here.... / ... / About the film version / ... / MORE HERE
/ Based on the drawing / illustration done by G. van Raemdonck, in my well-worn, well read-to-me, as a young boy, favourite book: Alleen op de Wereld (Alone in the World). / Where English-reading children, of my generation might have (all) read Treasure Island, or followed the adventures of Biggles, a lot of my generation grew up with: Alleen op de Wereld., if they read, or could be read to, in Dutch. / / This book was given to me when I was a baby. Read to me several times over by my mother, starting when I was too young for the very sad bits in the book. / ......... / In 2005, I enjoyed searching for the original French version (Sans Famille), among the second-hand books, for sale, along the River Seine, and, via my daughter, being told that Hector Malot had lived in one of the side streets, near-by. / ......... / The book has lost its cover and, when I was about 8 or so, I used coloured pencils to ” improve ” the illustrations by van Raemdonck. / Now I’m doing that again, but with oil paint, on canvas.
I am enjoying basing my paintings on the illustrations by Georges van Raemdonck, in the 1940 edition of the book, Alleen Op De Wereld (Alone in the world), translated by Hildebrand, from Sans Famille, by Hector Malot. My copy of the book, which was given to me as a baby and read to me, practically, from then on, by my mother, several times over, has long ago, lost its cover and some of the illustrations are coloured in, by me, with coloured pencil, when I was about 7 or 8. Please read my journal, on the subject.
It’s the scene where Bob helps Remi and Mattia wash Capi. / See the translation, as Nobody’s Boy, here! A most pleasant 23rd of December, was had, looking after the (temporary) Dutch Australian Cultural Centre, working on the painting between visitors, to the centre. / This painting was part of my: Jo Mulholland – Remembering – an anthology, exhibition. Tap Gallery, Darlinghurst, Sydney. 6-12 October. (Celebrating my 65th birthday, October 8, with an opening of the exhibition.) / .. /
This shot was taken during one of many live shows held at the monument in Newcastle. It was a bright scene to begin with so I decided to use the Multiply Blend mode in CS3 to help pull down the highlights instead of the typical use of a tone curve. It actually brings out a lot of detail. I intentionally left the scene a little dark and brightened the area around the subjects.

This is my Father’s Violin which I inherited after his death, it was in bits and not very well looked after due to his ill health in his later years I have put it back together and fixed bits and given it a good clean up and polish he was a good musician and it was one of my greatest joys to listen to him, and very often when I was a small child he would go into his bedroom as I was put to bed and play this as a lullaby for me the Photo in the background is my parents wedding pic Love ‘N’ Laughter Kriss Violin Pic Info / shot in 80CM Softbox / Lit by one of my Cheapo 500 Watt worklights / FUJIFILM FinePix S6500fd / f/8 / ISO 100 / 1/2 Sec / 8MM / / /

Remi and Mattia buy a cow. As explained so often…... ....homage to George van Raemdonck, who illustrated the 1940 edition of Alleen Op De Wereld, translated from Hector Malot’s Sans Famille. At this stage, in the book, Vitalis is in gaol and the boys look after themselves and their troupe. They buy a cow with the money they have at that stage. The vet supports their purchase. / . / . / For me it’s Van Raemdonck’s version of Remi and Mattia that I’ve grown up with and that’s who they are, for me. / I own a more recent edition now, with different illustrations and there is also a cartoon version, / . / I try to avoid looking at those. / . / Alleen op de Wereld was read to me at least twice over, as a bedtime story, when I was far too young, to start with.
