Franconia from the Pemigewasset ~ Once more, O Mountains of the North, / unveil Your brows, and lay your cloudy mantles by And once more, ere the eyes that seek ye fail, / Uplift against the blue walls of the sky Your mighty shapes, / and let the sunshine weave Its golden net-work in your belting woods, Smile down in rainbows from your falling floods, And on your kingly brows at morn and eve / Set crowns of fire! So shall my soul receive Haply the secret of your calm and strength, / Your unforgotten beauty interfuse My common life, / your glorious shapes and hues / And sun-dropped splendors at my bidding come, / Loom vast through dreams, and stretch in billowy length / From the sea-level of my lowland home! They rise before me! / Last night’s thunder-gust / Roared not in vain: for where its lightnings thrust Their tongues of fire, / the great peaks seem so near, / Burned clean of mist, so starkly bold and clear, / I almost pause the wind in the pines to hear, / The loose rock’s fall, the steps of browsing deer. The clouds that shattered on yon slide-worn walls / And splintered on the rocks their spears of rain / Have set in play a thousand waterfalls, / Making the dusk and silence of the woods Glad with the laughter of the chasing floods, / And luminous with blown spray and silver gleams, / While, in the vales below, / the dry-lipped streams Sing to the freshened meadow-lands again. So, let me hope, / the battle-storm that beats The land with hail and fire / may pass away / With its spent thunders at the break of day, / Like last night’s clouds, / and leave, as it retreats, / A greener earth and fairer sky behind, / Blown crystal-clear by Freedom’s Northern wind! ~ Poetry by John Greenleaf Whittier 1862 Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi
I have selected some of my atmospheric paintings, and matched them to the months. Jan – Graveyard Metallica. The lowest, darkest point in winter, in the Northern hemisphere. It gets better from now on! Feb – Hetton Colliery 1838. A dark and industrial scene, we have to tough this month out, like those hard men of that era in the mines! Mar – Smalholm Sunset . The light begins to get brighter as Spring is nearly here. Apr – Blea Tarn. Spring is here and the light gets bright. May – El Golco . Bright long days are here! Jun – Corinth . The season warms up and the longest days of the year. July – Market Day. The hottest month. Aug – Toscana . Holidays abroad and at home. Sept – Victorian Lady Fishing . September begins to turn the season. Oct – Old Carpathia . The dark nights begin, and October ends with Halloween. Nov – Beamish Wheel . Autumnal colours are everywhere. Dec – Trees of Eden . The winter Solstice, and celebration of the birth of Jesus. The reverse is, of course, true for those of you in the Southern hemisphere!

Third Place Winner in the COUNTRY ROADS around the world Challenge What’s On YOUR Road? / A word of advice for everyone. Once the work is submitted to a challenge, don’t make any changes. I edited my original image and it disappeared from the challenge results. From my collection: / Emerquinox ~ The Spirit of Alaska ~ Alaska North Star Winter Scenics SOLD / 1x Matted Print A beautiful cow Moose and her yearling Calf browsing near North Pole Alaska ~ Winter Scenics Emerquinox is a word I coined when I combined the words Emerge and Equinox. This magnificent Cow Moose and her young calf were photographed with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi near North Pole Alaska. North Pole Alaska is about a twenty minute drive from Fairbanks Alaska on Badger Road. Did you know more than one Moose is still Moose? Many Moose, or two Moose, or one Moose, it is always Moose. Just thought you would want to know that. :) I have many more images of this beautiful Cow Moose and her yearling calf as they permitted me to watch and photograph them for over an hour! I have over 100 shots of them. Of course I wouldn’t wish to post them all, but I will upload a few more if you would like to see them! Thank you so much to the Hosts and to everyone for your kind notes and for voting for my image in the Country Roads Around the World challenge What’s on YOUR Road? My image won Third Place! Thank you so much!! Many of my viewers seem to perceive I am standing on the ground within arms length of this 1200+ lb Moose!! I wish for everyone to know and understand that I remained in my truck watching her with her adorable calf for well over an hour. And while she did approach me as I remained in my truck watching her, (with my engine idling and heater blowing as the temps were subzero!) once she decided I was no threat to her, she seemed as curious about me as I was about her and her darling calf! The Cows are very protective of their young, and the Bulls are aggressive and unpredictable as well. And I would advise everyone to never approach a Moose. She is a ‘resident’ Moose, and she and her calf live in the deep forest surrounding my home in the wilderness when I lived in Alaska near North Pole. She is wild, and certainly not tame, as someone asked. A Cow Moose will kill you if you come between her and her calves. Cows are generally not hunted, and she is simply accustomed to being around humans since she is one of several generations of Moose born in this area. With an abundance of Diamond Willow (their favourite) and other tender shoots along the roadways, and the remnants of summer gardens, they simply brush off the snow with their noses and browse. She has no need to migrate. There are many many more in this area. They are elusive however, and nocturnal for the most part, so it is always a thrill to see one! It is only in winter when one sees them struggling to survive the deep winter browsing during the “daylight” hours. And then too, in winter it is dark for so many hours so the night is extended! Most people think of Alaska as The Land of the Midnight Sun. That is true only for a short time in a very brief summer. In winter Alaska is The Land of Perpetual Darkness. The calf’s first winter is the most precarious. This calf is experiencing her first winter. I can see that she is a female calf by her fine feminine sex characteristics. The male calves are larger and masculine. During summer it is generally late evening, dusk, during the night and early morning when one sees the beautiful Moose browsing and foraging in the forests and along the rivers and roadways. ~ Sharon Mau Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved / My images do not belong to the public domain and may not be reproduced in any manner whatsoever without my written authorization. In the center of the gold rests a purple kahili. The white and black bars represent the balance of all things – Heaven and Earth, night and day, the positive and negative. Reflections of a Brown Bear in an Autumn Stream with the Fractalius Filter applied. Bear baiting still occurs in the Punjab and Sindh provinces of Pakistan, although it has declined considerably overall since 2004. The events are organised predominantly by local landlords who own the fighting dogs used; the dogs are usually a cross breed similar to Pit Bull terriers. During the event the bear will be tethered to a rope 2–5 metres long in the centre of an arena to prevent escape. Bears’ canine teeth are often removed and their claws may be filed down giving them less advantage over the dogs. Each fight lasts around three minutes. If the dogs pull the bear to the ground they are said to win the fight. Bears usually have to undergo several fights during each day’s event. Bears are illegally sourced by poaching. Asiatic black bears and brown bears are known to be poached in Pakistan and used in bear baiting. Asiatic black bears are listed as vulnerable on the World Conservation Union’s (IUCN’s) Red List of Threatened Animals. The capture of bear cubs is prohibited across three provinces of Pakistan by: the North West Frontier Province Conservation and Management Act (1975); the Punjab Wildlife Protection, Preservation, Conservation and Management Act (1974); and the Sindh Wildlife Protection Ordinance (1972). Bear baiting was banned in Pakistan by the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1890). Pakistan’s wildlife authorities are working with animal welfare groups to eradicate the events, with some success. Baiting animals is outlawed in the Quran. The Bioresource Research Centre, a Pakistani wildlife group working to end bear baiting, use this to encourage mosques in areas where baiting occurs to add an anti-cruelty message to their Friday Khutbba (sermon). Kund Park Sanctuary in Kund, North-West Frontier Province, was opened in 2001 by the World Society for the Protection of Animals to provide a home for bears confiscated by the wildlife authorities and NGOs working to eradicate bear baiting in Pakistan.

Taken this year when the falls had extremely high levels of water coming over. This is a tiny section of the whole falls. Taken with my Canon 400D on a tripod. These falls are situated between Boat Harbour and Stanley off the main road by about 23km. The parking area is right at the falls, however to get to the bottom, there is a very long set of steps, fine going down, rather different coming up, however the track and steps are well constructed with good handrails, though steep.
