  • / A few leaves drifted down today, reminding me that fall is just around the corner…I was standing in the garden, looking up through the dappled leaves to the sky above, hardly able to see as the sun shone so brightly, thinking how fast summer goes and how long winter lasts…but leaves when they finally land, get trapped and become one with the soil that feeds my garden… / I am busy working on another portrait, but stopped to paint that vision of light that made a halo around the leaves as they fell…the view is as if you are underneath the leaves as they fall. • FEATURED IN SONY SHOOTERS ON 10-31-2009. FEATURED IN ALASKA ~ BEYOND YOUR DREAMS ON 10-03-2009. © Deb Larson SONY A900; f/9; 1/200 sec.; ISO-200; 150 mm; Sony 4 – 5.6 70-400 SSM Lens. Taken on 9-14-2009 from the paved lookout at mile 101.7 of the Glenn Highway. Matanuska Glacier is a valley glacier and is located in the heart of the Chugach Mountains. It is 27 miles long by 4 miles wide and is the largest glacier in the United States that is accessible by car. Some 18,000 years ago, the glacier stretched all the way to the Palmer area. The meltwater drains into a stream which is the source of the Matanuska River. This is an active glacier that expands around a foot a day. An unusual feature of the glacier is the presence of a weather hole (an area/location that receives calmer weather than the surrounding area … thunderstorms often miss, or near which approaching storms often dissipate) making the weather unusually clear and sunny. Information gathered from the The Milepost – Alaska 1995 edition and Wikipedia via the internet on 10-02-2009.

  • This is my interpretation of the “Third Sorrow” of Ted Hughes “Seven Sorrows of Autumn”, which on the surface appears to be a sad poem but I think it’s really a paean to autumn....see the Fourth Sorrow below Watercolour on Watercolour on DrawMaster Paper FEATURED IN JPG CAST 0FFS / MORNINGS AND EVENINGS..SUNBEAMS AND STORMS / INSPIRED ART The first sorrow of autumn / Is the slow goodbye / Of the garden who stands so long in the evening- / A brown poppy head, / The stalk of a lily, / And still cannot go. The second sorrow / Is the empty feet / Of a pheasant who hangs from a hook with his brothers. / The woodland of gold / Is folded in feathers / With its head in a bag. And the third sorrow / Is the slow goodbye / Of the sun who has gathered the birds and who gathers / The minutes of evening, / The golden and holy / Ground of the picture. The fourth sorrow / Is the pond gone black / Ruined and sunken the city of water- / The beetle’s palace, / The catacombs / Of the dragonfly. And the fifth sorrow / Is the slow goodbye / Of the woodland that quietly breaks up its camp. / One day it’s gone. / It has only left litter- / Firewood, tentpoles. And the sixth sorrow / Is the fox’s sorrow / The joy of the huntsman, the joy of the hounds, / The hooves that pound / Till earth closes her ear / To the fox’s prayer. And the seventh sorrow / Is the slow goodbye / Of the face with its wrinkles that looks through the window / As the year packs up / Like a tatty fairground / That came for the children....Ted Hughes / The Fourth Sorrow
