Grotto Falls in early Spring 2007. / Camera used: Canon EOS 30D Award Featured in Waterfall Photography The Grottos Falls Trail begins at stop #5 on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. This easy trail, through a hemlock forest, crosses three small streams and leads behind the falls. the cool moist environment at the falls is perfect for salamanders and summer hikers. Trillium Gap Trail meanders through an old-growth hemlock forest, crosses three small streams and leads behind the 25 foot high waterfall. The cool moist environment at the falls is perfect for salamanders and summer hikers. / The hike is 3 miles roundtrip and considered moderate in difficulty. Access trail: Trillium Gap / Trailhead: From the parkway in Gatlinburg, turn at traffic light #8 and follow Historic Nature Trail into Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Take Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail (no RVs or trailers; closed in winter ) to stop #5 where there is a large parking area. All photographs are there to remind us of what we forget… In this, as in other ways… they are the opposite of paintings… Paintings record what the painter remembers… Because each one of us forgets different things, a photo more than a painting… may change its meaning… according to who is looking at it…. / John Berger There are actually 3 levels along this portion of the McCloud River in the Shasta-Cascade region of Northern California… a Lower, Middle and Upper Falls… obviously by my caption of this shot… you are viewing Middle Falls. The hike is very scenic back to the Falls, and not overly crowded either. It was like having our own private little waterfall both times we visited this area, as we had the place literallly to ourselves….

Taken on the trail to “The Basin” on Friday October 3/08. Nikon D40, Nikkor 18-55mm lens. / The Basin is a naturally occuring granite bowl in the White Mountains range and is part of the Franconia Notch State Park, located in the heart of the popular White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire USA / On this trail are cascades and waterfalls leading to The Basin, which is believed to have been eroded 15,000 years ago while the North American ice sheet was melting. The Basin has been smoothed by small stones and sand, whirled around by the Pemigewasset River. / I didn’t make it as far as The Basin this time (have been there in the past), because I was caught by surprise in an unexpected downpour. I quickly shoved my camera into the case and wrapped my sweater around it. Then looked for my friend Wanda who was nowhere to be found. She had made it all the way to The Basin ahead of me. I was lucky to find cover under the roof of an outhouse at the beginning of the trail. It rained and hailed for about 20 minutes. When my friend Wanda made it back, she was soaking wet. This is one of two shots I managed to get. ! I spent last week in the wilderness, backpacking through the inner depths of the Grand Canyon. A small side trail led to “Ribbon Falls” from Bright Angel stream on the North Rim. So I went. The place was a magical oasis in the hot and arid desert. I photographed for an hour and then left. I was not satisfied. I had to return. Several days later with sore feet and eager to begin my 4000 foot climb out to civilization, I passed this side trail again and went in for a second look at the falls. The sun was different, and so was the mood. I “felt” the place much better this time and “let the picture take me” this time. I like the result.

St Mary Falls is a very accessible waterfall on the east side of Glacier National Park. The trailhead is at the Sun Point turnout from the Going to the Sun road. It is 0.8 mile (one way) to St. Mary Falls with a 260 foot elevation drop. Its a pretty easy descent to these beautiful falls with only a mild climb back up. Well worth it.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has water falls in many places. When its hot, people head for the hills of the Smokies. / Cool breezes and water. Swimming, fishing, hiking, and driving trails near by. Shop till you drop in Gatlinburg, and walk your dog if he is well behaved. All kinds of things to do and see, good old Tennessee. Piegon Forge is nearby, I know you like to eat, well I couldn’t name them all. Make fun at the way people talk, come on down yeu all. Maybe you haven’t been here yet, watch out for those curvey roads. One of the most visited parks in the good old USA. GSMNP has a tremendous diversity of plant life. Many people document it or just enjoy it. Rhododendron in bloom around the falls, this gorgous shrub is easily seen because it grows well on exposed ridges at 3,000 to 6,000 feet elevation. They grow 8-12 ft. high.and one of the first I added to my garden, along with the natural ones in the woods. They bloom in June and July in the Park, and about a months difference here later. / Oil on canvas JeffeeArt4u
